KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd (Masteel) and KUB Malaysia Bhd Wednesday signed a joint-venture agreement to jointly build and operate 100km inter-city rail transit system costing RM1.23 billion at Iskandar Malaysia in Johor.

The system will also be linked to the Mass Rapid Transit line in Singapore.

Masteel and KUB will hold 60 per cent and 40 per cent stakes, respectively, in the joint-venture company, Metropolitan Commuter Network Sdn Bhd.

The proposed inter-city rail transit will have up to 25 commuter stations in major towns in the Iskandar Malaysia economic corridor in the initial stage.

"We will use the existing Keretapi Tanah Melayu rail and will add four new stations in the growth areas along KTM's rail path," said Masteel managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tai Hean Leng.
(KTM will line will end at Kulai after this??????)

"We hope the agreement with the government will be completed within this year and we expect to fully operate at the end-2013," said Tai.

The project has two components: the "Build Transfer" of the rail transit infrastructure and the "Own Operate" of the inter-city train system.

"We are still having discussions to use the suitable electricity train coaches and we are looking at China and European countries," he said.

On the socio-economic front, Tai said this project would ease traffic congestion, estimated to grow at 4.2 per cent every year along Johor and Singapore.

About 70 per cent of the construction cost of the rail transit infrastructure would be funded under the Public-Private Partnership scheme.

"With this project, we will see constant recurring income and we will be the first private train operator in Malaysia," Tai added.

want to be that the actual number of passengers or potential number of passengers won't matter if someone in gov't decides to do it anyways? They can still pull out the "it will pull passengers out of Changi" (and increase "tourist arrivals to Johor/M'sia") argument

Cheers, m

Nice update! At least they found something useful for the old flyover. I thought they were going to demolish it when the mid-term link opened.

Customs & Immigration and Quarantine Complex
Tanjung Kupang : 1997

http://www.gdparchitects.com/project...e-complex.html

UNDULATIONS IN THE LANDSCAPE. The Customs & Immigration and Quarantine Complex is located in a broad dip that spans an undulating landscape. The approach from Singapore and the second crossing is through a grassed corridor of no-man’s land that passes through a plantation from the Johor Straits as it opens out to the site; flat and gradually rising on either side of a gentle cradle.

The mass of the facility is a silver undulating shell, lifted off the ground for ventilating winds and the movement of traffic. Cavernous by day, a long deep shadow spans the lip of the lifted shell while sunlight is brought in through bands of skylights at the ridges of the shell. Delicate at night, light filters out from beneath the shell, lightening and lifting it up from the ground. The volume of the shell is directional, low at the entry and exit areas and highest in the middle, opening out to the land on its sides. Functionally, the facility focuses on the 2 aspects critical to the success of its use - the movement patterns of traffic and of cross winds.

Re the new JB's ICQ.

Did anyone noticed, the power-to-be there now allow staff to park their cars all along the emergency lane at JB passport control, on your exit to Singapore !!!

This is really the spirit MALAYSIA BOLEH! For all the millions we spend in designing and building a beautiful building, it is typical of Malaysian to squeeze a warong here, a car park there, etc.

Malaysia-Singapore border transport gets a boost
Friday April 1, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...059&sec=nation

SINGAPORE: Come July, taxis plying both sides of the Singapore-Malaysia border will be able to pick-up and drop-off passengers anywhere in their respective countries.

The implementation date was agreed on at the eighth working meeting of the Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia here yesterday.

Currently, cross-border taxis are allowed to pick up and drop off passengers at just two places Ban San near Bugis Street here and the Pasar Bakti terminal in Johor.

There are some 400 authorised cabs which offer cross-border services, reported Channel News Asia, quoting a statement from authorities in both countries.

It said the committee also agreed to boost connectivity by further increasing the quota for cross-border bus services.

Additional cross-border bus services between Singapore and Iskandar Malaysia have been approved and are being implemented.

A joint engineering study for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) link between Iskandar Malaysia and Singapore was also approved.

The statement said officials from both sides would set out to gather international best practises in the implementation of a dual co-located Customs, Immigration and Quarantine system to complement the RTS link.

The committee noted with satisfaction that Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Temasek Holdings had progressed in the discussion on the development of an iconic project with a wellness theme in Iskandar Malaysia. The project is targeted to be launched in May 2011.

The statement also said the river cleaning project in Iskandar Malaysia was progressing well. - Bernama

MRT proposed for Iskandar Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: A plan to build a 500km mass rapid transit (MRT) system has been proposed to improve the connectivity within Iskandar Malaysia, according to Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) chief executive Ismail Ibrahim.

“The MRT project will be developed in five or six phases. The first phase is expected to be completed by 2020. The announcement will be made by the Prime Minister if the proposal is accepted,” he said at the Invest Malaysia 2011 yesterday.

He said IRDA planned to build a bus rapid transit (BRT) first and expanded to MRT after that. However, it is still in the planning stage.

“The proposed BRT is about 400km with various phases. The first phase will be about 40km. Connectivity must be established within Iskandar as well as how Iskandar is connected with the outline region, including our neighbour,” he said.

On whether Singapore would extend its MRT to Johor Bahru, Ismail said: “There is actually no discussion with regard to extending the MRT from Singapore to Johor but there has been discussion about wanting to look at connectivity between Johor Baru and Singapore by use of rail, which could be an MRT system. It might so happen to be the same system or it might be a dedicated system.”

IRDA is the regulatory authority mandated to plan, promote and facilitate the development of Iskandar Malaysia into a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing.

Ismail said Iskandar Malaysia was targeted to attract investments of RM13bil annually into the region, with a target of RM73bil in the next five years following the completion of key infrastructure education and tourism projects by 2012.

He said Iskandar Malaysia had recorded a total investment of RM69.4bil as at December last year and the total had grown to RM73bil as at the first quarter of this year.

“Iskandar Malaysia has moved into Phase 2 of Iskandar Malaysia Compre-hensive Development Plan (2006-2025) with the completion and deliveries of major infrastructure and iconic investment projects, recording RM28bil at end of 2010,” he said.

Meanwhile, Iskandar Investment Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim said the launch of Iskandar Investment's pioneering catalytic developments beginning 2011 would accelerate the inflow of investment in projects and human capital development into Iskandar Malaysia.

“This will contribute not only to Malaysia's expected growth of 5% to 6% in real gross domestic product in 2011, but also support our nation's aspirations of becoming a high income nation by 2020,” he said in a statement.
