Gothenburg is usually referred to as "Little London"...
But instead perhaps it can be called "Not so much smaller Amsterdam"

More scottish at a later stage but it's start was very much influenced by the dutch.

Quote:
The city was heavily influenced by the Dutch. Dutch city planners were contracted to build the city as they had the skills needed to build in the marshy areas around the city. The town was designed like Dutch cities such as [[Amsterdam]. The plan of the streets and canals of Gothenburg closely resembles that of Jakarta, which was built by the Dutch around the same time.[9] The Dutchmen initially won political power and it was not until 1652, when the last Dutch politician in the city's council died, that the Swedes acquired political power over Gothenburg.[10] During the Dutch period the town followed Dutch town laws and there were propositions to make Dutch the official language in the town. Heavy city walls were built during the 17th century. These city walls were torn down after about 1810, because the development of cannons made such walls less valuable as a defence
I didn't know that the dutch influence was larger then city planing but apparently it was. Just like Stockholm once basicalkly was a german town Gothenburg was very much dutch it seems.

Dj4life, what do you mean? Nordic countries is a broader perspective than just Scandianavian countries but both are as precise as they can be.

Well, it was my mistake to include the Baltic States and parts of Germany, Poland and Russia in the term.

I love that building!

Gothenburg really has some nice buildings. But I became sad when I saw what still could have existed in the city if it hadn't been torn down in 1967.

The tower building is gone and I suppose most of the others are too?

The sad truth about what happened to Arkaden is here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=2204
half of the Arkaden building was already demolished on the colour photo in the link. This is how it used to look at street level:

Arkaden, Grand Hotel and Landeriet Olivedal (I think the name was) were the 3 sadest destructions in Gothenburg during these horrible decades (50s 60s and 70s). Grand Hotel was even more grand and beautiful than the one in Stockholm. It is just unbelievable.

It's "Göteborgshjulet" in Gothenburg (A Ferris-wheel) <-- aren't so sure about that spelling!
