The Metro is simply too slow, a ride from Maritim Serreria to Xativa or Angel Guimera takes around 15 minutes. The biggest problem in my opinion is the use of narrow gauge in the Metro, where it was not necessary at all since the overground trams don't use the underground metro lines, the narrow gauge doesn't allow for a high corner speed, so the trains are limited to 15-30km/h... I soon switched from using the metro to using the Bus, was much quicker that way because the bus drives with an average 40-50km/h.
I disagree with you, perhaps you don't know it, but some full-metro lines (1 & 3) also have overground sections that date from the end of the 19th century, so as these lines had narrow gauge, the new underground sections had to be built also with narrow gauge, don't forget that Valencia's metro is a mix of old single-track overground sections and newly built double-tracked underground sections. Actually, Line 1 is a tunnel linking the old lines to Llíria and Bétera (north) to the old line to Villanueva de Castellón (south), whereas the northern section of Line 3 was the old line from Pont de Fusta to Rafelbunyol. Only Line 5 is completely new.

Only 40 km. of Valencia system are full metro, the rest are commuter trains with lower frequencies...

I have taken some 30 metro station photos in this phantastic city:
Valencia gallery

With 4 photos I have trouble locating them. Can somebody help and tell the station names? Watch out for the question marks (near the bottom of the page).

I rode Valencia's metro a few summers ago. I love love love the sound it makes when it accelerates from a stop. I also like the jingle it makes before announcing station stops...does anyone have a clip of that???

Hey you all! from what station to what station does Line 1 operate as '''Rapid Transit''', i presume mostly underground and beyond this on the periphery on most sections there are surface level with crossings for vehicles and people, correct?!

I'd say from Empalme (where the Lliria and Betera branches meet) to Torrent. There are 14 stations in this section, 8 underground and 6 on the surface and the frequency is between 7 and 10 trains per hour on weekdays.
Yes, that's correct.

Some pictures of the new Alboraya-Palmaret and Benimàmet stations as a result of putting them below ground

I love some of the new station designs, and it really is amazing the investment that has been put into mass transit in Spain, compared to what we see in the UK. Does anyone know the effect the austeirty budgets are having on the already planned/started upgrades for Valencia metro?

Also, I read somewhere (can't remember where) that FGV is in discussions with ADIF and RENFE about trasnferring the Alcoi branch line to FGV. If so, does this suggest that there is a long term idea of extending Line 1 to Xatvia and merging the Alcoi branch into it? I assume this would invovle re-gauging the Alcoi line from Iberian to narrow as well as electrifying it. The only other thing I can think of would be extension of L1 to Xatvia (which has obvious benefits and would be reasonably straight-forward) and then running the Alcoi line as a DMU shuttle service. Given current budget constraints, it'd be a lot cheaper and a good way of finding out just how much ridership demand there is for the route before going the whole hog.

FGV and the Valencian government are almost bankrupt. Therefore they're not able to open new sections almost finished , like Line 5 to Ribarroja and new Line 2. Don't expect any new projects soon, this week there were even rumors that they were thinking of closing the southern part of Line 1, although finally they were denied.
