Yes, the single-track section between Torrent and Villanueva de Castellón, or maybe just between Picassent and Villanueva de Castellón. Although these rumors were denied, they show how the situation currently is.

What's the frequency of trains on the single-track section?

From Torrent to Villanueva?! That's not abandoning the extremities of the route, that's butchering it. Glad they denied it, but it makes you wonder just how serious the rumors are/were.

If they could scrape up the money from any source, it'd make most sense to complete the extensions nearest to completion that pass through the most populated areas - get those open (even in a restricted form) to increase farebox revenue. Having almost complete lines sit idle for want of finishing work isn't just wasting a huge amount of capital. It's bonds or loans that have to be repaid which were taken out on an assumed farebox revenue which ins't coming in, whilst at the same time you still have to perform basic maintenance to keep the sites safe.

Hourly, or 2x hour IIRC. It's not really a metro on that stretch, more like regional rail. It works a bit like the Metropolitan line in London - regional at the extremities, becoming a Metro style service in the city centre. I haven't used it in a while though, but I'm guessing it hasn't changed in that respect. If it's single track there is only so much you can do with the frequencies unless you physically upgrade the line.

Exactly, Lines 1 and 3 of the Valencia Metro have single track sections that reach towns 20 or 30 km far from Valencia. These sections used to belong to a former regional narrow gauge network, and they became the Valencia Metro when they were connected to each other through some city tunnels. Therefore, not all the current network can be considered a Metro, just the sections inside the city and its inner metro area (Torrent, Burjassot, Godella, Mislata, Manises, Benimamet, Alboraya...), but definitely not Lliria, Betera, Rafelbunyol or Villanueva de Castellón.

The capital destruction and corruption in the Valencia region is beyond criminal, some politicians from the last two decades should really be hanged for this. Not only is the Valencia region run like a banan republic on steroids, but all the politicians responsible for this mess get away with it when they should be jailed, every last one of them.

When you think about really bad corruption, you think about former Soviet republics, like Bulgaria or Azerbaijan, but the Valencia region is even worse when you think about it

I may agree on some points, but overall, you are exaggerating things a bit too much.

Apart from this, I don´t get what you mean by this post, we´re not here to discuss politics.

Oh, and Bulgaria wasn´t part of the USSR.

I'm guessing this is going to impact on service frequency as well - which reduces ridership and farebox revenue. Downward spiral

It´s already happening.
There have been complaints this last weekend due to a decrease of frequencies.
Trains were absolutely packed, you had to let at least one train go before you´d be able to board one (that is, unless you went to a suburban station, in which case you had to endure the overcrowding and board at all costs).

Downward spiral
Kind of, but not that dramatic.

From Global Rail News:

Trams in Valencia undergo half-life overhaul
26 JUN, 2014

3800 Series Valencia

Valencia’s 20-year-old Siemens-Düwag UT-3800 trams are returning to service following a €8 million overhaul.

As well as having mechanical components upgraded, the vehicles, which were launched in 1994 with the opening of the Line 4 tramway, have been fitted with new passenger information and CCTV systems.

Each of the 25 original trams are also having their interiors refreshed and their old livery replaced by Metrovalencia’s red and white colours.

The upgrade, which is expected to be completed in 2018, will extend the fleet’s life by more than 10 years, according to Metrovalencia

Valencia metro | Extension of line 5 to Ribarroja del Turia.

Line 5 of the Valencia metro network is being extended from Rosas station to Ribarroja del Turia.

This will a suburban rail extension, not full metro.

It should have opened some time ago, but works were halted because of the crisis.

It seems that it will finally open somewhere between the end of this year and early 2015 (no exact date yet, though).

It follows the same route and platform of the old Valencia-Lliria Iberian-gauge railway line, which was closed after the section between Faitanar and Rosas was taken over by the metro.

It will have four stations (La Cova, La Presa, Masia de Traver and Ribarroja), of which all but the latter are exactly where the old Renfe stations used to be.

Better late than never. The bad side to it is that it won't get to the centre of Ribarroja yet, like the old line used to do.
The plans were to open this section as a first phase, and then extend it to the Ribarroja centre and Vilamarxant on a second phase.

But at least it will reach Ribarroja again soon (albeit much much later than expected, but the crisis arrived, and...).

Valencia metro | NEWS (and extension to Ribarroja del Turia).

Ok, so now we know, the extension from Rosas to Riba-roja del Túria would open in February 2015.

This will mean that they will restructure the lines and their numbers, to make them clearer for the passenger.

Line 1 (Bétera - Villanueva de Castellón) -currently line 1.
Line 2 (Llíria - Torrent Avinguda) -currently line 1.
Line 3 (Rafelbunyol - Aeroport) -currently line 3.
Line 4 tramway (Mas del Rosari – Dr. Lluch) -unchanged.
Line 5 (Marítim Serrería - Aeroport) -currently line 5.
Line 6 tramway (Tossal del Rei – Marítim Serrería) -unchanged.
Line 7 (Marítim Serrería – Torrent Avinguda) -currently line 5.
Line 8 tramway (Marítim Serrería – Marina Reial Joan Carles I) -currently line 5.
Line 9 (Alboraya Peris Aragó- Riba-roja de Turia) -currently line 3, plus the new extension.

Here's a map of how will it all look like:

It is not a new station, remember that this used to be a Cercanías Renfe line that was closed in stages and its gauge was changed from Iberian to metric:
