G V Raja quarter league: Sesa Goa thrash MEG

Athul Lal A GFirst Published : 01 Feb 2010 06:26:43 AM ISTLast Updated :

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The youth brigade of Sesa Goa thrashed Madras Engineering Group (MEG), Bangalore, 3-1 in the first match of the quarter league round of the 8th G V Raja All-India Football Tournament in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

The first goal of the match, which exposed all the weakness of the MEG team, came in the 12th minute following a sloppy effort by the MEG defence line up. Taking advantage of the delay in clearing the ball by MEG men away from their penalty box, Marcus Maschrenas quickly snatched the ball and fired into the nets giving a 1-0 lead for the Goan team comprising only under-21 players.

Without giving much time for recovery, the second blow for MEG came in the 15th minute. This time it was Goan junior state player Savio Canario attacking from the right. The left-foot kick by Savio landed in the nets over the MEG goal-keeper Kannan.

For the next few minutes, the stadium witnessed the MEG players attacking the Goan post with all their guns blazing. With some regular co-ordinated moves, they earned five corners and some freekicks. But, none of them was converted.

MEG striker Ngurneilal Hmar, who scored a hatrick in the knockout round, was tightly marked by the Goan defenders. On the other hand, Goan strikers were found moving freely in the opponents penalty box. MEG’s solitary goal came in the 33rd minute with the Malayali player Ajiraj K Philip successfully converting the cross from Shiyad.

In the 42nd minute, Marcus Maschrenas again exploited the lapse in the MEG defence. From the mid-field, it was a race between the MEG defender and Marcus for some time. From just near the goal-post, Marcus lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Kannan, who was proceeding towards him, and extended the lead to 3-1.

Though Marcus continued to attack regularly, MEG did not concede any goal in the second half, thanks to MEG’s coach S P Shaji’s decision to bring goalkeeper Amit Shaw in for Kannan. The decision was proved right in the second minute of the second half with Amit successfully blocking the shot from Marcus. The genuine chance for MEG in the second half was missed by Sarat Singh in the 87th minute.

- Venu, your intent is laudable, to promote sports-based discussions on here but I believe the Mods will have a different view based on forum rules. I think it will be best if we can confine our discussions to sports projects and related news. Sports event news, such as match results, may not make the cut. Request the Mods to clarify. Thanks.

Its cricket time for city girls

Athira M.First Published : 12 Feb 2010 01:00:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 12 Feb 2010 09:21:24 AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Women’s cricket is dying a slow death in many parts of the State, but in the capital city the game is set to break new grounds. The game needs more talents and efforts are being made to bring in more players to the game.

“Believe it or not, there are few takers for the game in the State. That too when the players are provided the best of facilities and monetary benefits. After the merger of the Women’s Cricket Association of India with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) in 2006, there has been no shortage of funds or facilities. But, the sad part is that the girls have been shying away from playing the game,” said Nita Balakrishnan, selection committee chairperson, State Women’s (junior) Cricket Team, and a former player.

“It is true that it will take two to three years for the benefits of the merger of the women’s association with the BCCI to trickle down. However, when compared to athletics and other sports, cricket is not given enough encouragement in educational institutions. The point is many institutions and aspiring players are not even aware of the advantages. Like, even one who play at the district-level get well-paid,” said Vinod S Kumar, secretary of the Trivandrum District Cricket Association.

Two of them - Asha (from Thiruvananthapuram) and Shani (from Kozhikode) recently got selected for the South Zone camp for seniors. Saranya S (who is the State team captain and is from Thiruvananthapuram) was the first reserve. Asha was selected to the Indian camp last year. “Next year these girls will not be in the picture. And we can’t boast of outstanding players in the next batch. So, we thought of approaching schools to get more girls to play the game,” Nita added.

What is the progress of the various infrastructure for the conduct of the National Games in Tvm later this year like the games village, indoor stadiums, swimming pools etc.?
We are already in March. Will we have enough time to complete the work on the international stadium and the one in Vattiyoorkavu and also big modernisation work in the Central Stadium?

Cheers!!!
