It is now almost clear. IPL matches will be held in Trivandrum.

Today all the major news papers reported the same.

Metro Manorama also reported this heartening news today.

Tharoor held discussions with MVK.

New stadium in Kariavattam will not have synthetic tracks.

It will be a mega stadium for conducting international cricket and food ball matches.

Seating capacity of 60,000.

Stadium will come up in 30 acres of land.

Cost to be around 80 - 100 crores.

New stadium to come up much before the proposed KCA stadium

Now its turn of Vivek Venugoal

Pune and Kochi join the IPL bandwagon
Web posted at: 3/22/2010 2:7:47
Source ::: IANS/The Peninsula / By John Mary
chennai/kochi: Sahara Adventure Sports Group and Rendezvous Sports World Limited successfully bid for Pune and Kochi franchise teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL)cricket here yesterday. The Sahara ASG, which had also bid for Ahmedabad and Nagpur, purchased Pune for $370m while Rendezvous SWL forked out $333.3m as against the minimum bid amount of $225m.

The two new teams will join the existing eight in the 2011 IPL tournament. Under the present format (home and away, all-play-all), the number of matches from the next season will swell to 94 from the current 60.

Honchos of Rendezvous Sports World Ltd, a consortium of six private companies that worked for more than a year to clinch the Kerala IPL Team bid, are supremely confident of taking world class cricket to Kerala and making good their investment. Led by Shailendra Gaekwad’s Rendezvous, the consortium that won the bid are the Elite group in Kerala, Anchor Earth, Parani Development Pvt Ltd, Anand Shah Developers and Film Waves.

Vivek Venugopal of the Elite group said Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor “is our mentor, whop lent us his emotional support and overall guidance, without which we would not have made it at all”. Shashi Tharoor dismissed all speculation about the nature of his involvement in the IPL bid, telling the media in Koch: “I am not part of the bid but was pleased to give Rendezvous Sports World my encouragement and blessings.

Vivek Venugopal said now was the time to put at rest all speculation and get on with the task of getting the right infrastructure and the best team possible. “One thing is sure. If we had not come in now, there would not have been a Kerala team in the next ten years”. He said that while other teams were city-specific, the Rendezvous team is Kerala IPL, not just concentrating on a city. This is a pointer that this would lend an opportunity for matches to be played at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi and the new stadium that’s being built in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the National Games.

Indian Express has always tried their best to pull the carpet from under Dr. Tharoor. Funny to note this time they have reported the heartburn by DYFI over Tharoor's involvement in IPL. My oh my!

Just for Info :

Very few people know that Trivandrum was once a venue for ODI.

I have read that Trivandrum was the location for first One Day International match in India.
University Stadium used to be the venue.

First ODI India v Australia - Oct 1, 1984
Last ODI India v West Indies - Jan 25, 1988 (End of Golden Era of Trivandrum).

It is sad when IPL people telling that No ODI was played in Trivandrum.

Ahmedabad (Gujarat Stadium), Ahmedabad (Sardar Patel), Amritsar, Bangalore, Baroda (IPCL Sports Complex), Baroda (Motibaug Palace), Calcutta, Chandigarh, Chennai (Madras-Chepauk), Chennai (Madras-Nehru), Cuttack, Delhi (Feroz Shah Kotla), Faridabad, Guwahati, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jamshedpur, Jodhpur, Jullundur, Kanpur, Kochi, Lucknow (KD Singh), Lucknow (University), Margao, Mohali, Mumbai (Bombay-Brabourne), Mumbai (Bombay-Gymkhana), Mumbai (Bombay-Wankhede), Nagpur, New Delhi (Jawarharlal Nehru), Patna, Poona, Rajkot, Srinigar, Trivandrum, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam

Had the privilege of watching this match @ the university stadium. Delayed start and overs were reduced. Still disappointed because of the fact that Kapil Dev got out early and didn't get the chance to watch the Great Sir Viv Richards bat.

One six hit by Phil Simmons went out of the ground, if i remeber correctly it went towards the palayam mosque.

Good Old Days

It was Phil Simmons...

Here is the match page from Circinfo. India couldn't defend 239 in 1988, probably because it was a small ground.

I too was there, as a kid, with my father. I still remember Kapil Dev getting in to the ground to bat with a bandana on his forehead, patting on the back of a kid. He came back to the pavilion fast.
