I had the privilege to meet Minister M Vijayakumar a short time ago.. Although my father and i had met him for a personal reason of mine, we also asked him about the karyavattom and vattiyoorkavu sports complexes. He assured us that they will come into existence very soon. He also said that he has asked KCA and Sasi Tharoor to conduct IPL matches in Tvm and Kozhikode besides Kochi. He also strongly suggested them to name the IPL team with a Kerala tag instead of Kochi tag.
MVK is definitely a Tvm lover and i hope he could turn out to be the Godfather of Tvm, which is definitely a post that has to be filled by a strong politician.

Its great to see this forum getting so much of support from viewers all around the world. With so much of support from trivandrumites all over the world, theres little doubt things are going the right way for tvm as the main thing we lacked was the love towards our city. I think the present generation is much better than the older generation in that area. Hope to see a future generation which loves Tvm to the core.

QBR to enter state on August 26
HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR), a global relay held as a curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games, will reach the state on August 26.
The relay, one of the great traditions of Commonwealth Games, was first introduced in the year 1958 at Cardiff. Every time, prior to the CWG, the Queen launches the relay at the Buckingham Palace and it will travel through various Commonwealth nations. This time, the relay was launched on October, 2009, by the Queen in the presence of President Prathiba Patel as part of the 19th CWG to be held in New Delhi. It will travel through 71 Commonwealth nations, covering a distance of around 1,90,000 km. ``The relay has now covered Europe, Africa, America and the Caribbean and reached New Zealand, which is the 58th nation in the whole journey. As of now, it travelled around 1,28,506 km,’’ said Lt Gen. Raj Kadyan, the additional Director-General of the event, here on Monday. The QBR will enter the country on June 25 from Pakistan through the Wagah border and will cover all states and union territories. This will be the longest domestic journey of the QBR in the history of the CWG. The baton holds a message from the Queen and it will be read during the inaugural ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games. The baton, which will travel through Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi covering a distance of around 440 km, will enter the state via Tamil nadu and leave the state on August 30. http://expressbuzz.com/cities/thiruv...26/175002.html http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=196639883024 |

City man on SA ground
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a change this time. The Malayali presence in the FIFA World Cup 2010 won’t be contained to the galleries anymore. There will be a Keralite on ground assisting the officials in South Africa.
K. Rajeev, veteran footballer from the city, has been selected as an organising committee volunteer for the World Cup 2010 and he has been allotted the protocol functional area in Johannesburg. He will leave for South Africa on June 9. Rajeev was selected after several screenings and interviews that had lasted for over a year. A total of 75,000 people across the world had applied for the 2,500 volunteer posts. ‘‘Applications were invited during July 2009. After an initial training, there was a personal interview at the South African Consulate in Mumbai in February 2010. The accreditation as a volunteer was given after an online training and assessment,’’ said Rajeev, who was one of the founder players of the SBT football team. Rajeev, hailing from Sasthamangalam in the city, played for SBT from 1986 to 1994. He was the manager of the SBT team for five years - from 1995 to 2000. Rajeev also holds a post-graduate diploma in sports management. Presently, he is looking after the SBT junior team. url |

Crazy for jerseys
Wonder boy Lionel Messi seems to have stolen the heart of not only the Argentine coach Diego Maradona, but also the thousands of football fans in the city of Thiruvananthapuram too. Blue and white striped jerseys printed with number 19 (Messi’s jersey number) are the hottest among the World Cup football special jerseys stacked in the sports stores in the city. Messi’s teammate Carlos Tevez and Brazil’s Kaka are the other big favourites.
Their jerseys are being sold like hot cakes among the fans, with barely hours left for the kick-off of the FIFA World Cup 2010. The sales of the jerseys of the nations participating in the tournament have hit a stupendous high in the capital. The sportswear shops, selling these jerseys, are running wild to meet the unprecedented demand from the fans, who throng these shops. ‘‘Argentina seems to be the hot favourites among the fans,’’ said Jithin of Pronto Sports. Most of these fans are either college students or youths. The sales of kids’ wear are yet to pick up since they usually do not follow the game. But the scenario may change once the tournament starts, Jithin said. ‘‘We have not stocked the jerseys of teams other than Argentina and Brazil since they do not have any takers,’’ said Jithin, pointing at the lone jersey of Germany hanging in the shop. But a new stock of jerseys of Argentina and Brazil will arrive next week as the first stock is almost over, he said. However, Zaheer of Sports Land had a completely different take on that. ‘‘The game is so unpredictable that during the course of the tournament, anyone may rise as the favourites and we are ready to meet any sudden change in the trend with enough stock of apparels of other teams also,’’ he said. ‘‘We are finding it hard to meet the demand from these crazy fans,’’ said Zaheer. Besides the jerseys, flags and scarves of different teams are also in demand. There are a lot of road shows by fans of the game going on in the city; and the flags and the scarves add colour to their programmes. The price of football jerseys ranges from Rs 150 to Rs 750. The price varies if the customers need their names or images of their favourite footballer printed on the jerseys. England seems to be the favourites of the customers of Naaz, a readymade textile shop in the city. ‘‘Most of our customers come demanding the jersey of Wayne Rooney,’’ said Visakh of Naaz. Players of Spain and Italy are also in great demand, he added. While the sports goods shops got smarter by stocking enough football jerseys well in advance, most of the other trendy readywear shops missed the opportunity. ‘‘We never knew that there would be such a demand for football jerseys,’’ said the proprietor of one such shop. url |

On big screen
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Football - a religion that even the Communists love to embrace. The CPM-led City Corporation, dumping its good old role of a spectator, has decided to join the mania that is set to turn the city nights into days.
So, during this FIFA World Cup 2010, that kicks off in Johannesburg on Friday, if you happen to be out on the streets, you will not miss the games. The City Corporation would be installing screens at ten crowded points in the capital where the game could be watched with the same fervour. Before the excitement kills you, the big screens would appear in various stages of the World Cup and not all would be put up from June 11. To kick off, screens would appear at Vanchiyoor, probably near the court premises or towards the General Hospital Junction, at Poojappura (inside the park) and Karamana (adjacent to the autorickshaw stand here). In the coastal areas, where football competes with fever, the City Corporation seems to be a little more pampering. For, the screens would come up in three places here, at Vettucaud, Valiathura and Poonthura or Beemapally (the decision is pending). As the coastal areas have always been the fondling cradle of football talents in the capital, these spots deserve special attention, sports enthusiasts at the Corporation believe. Manacaud, Statue, Palayam and East Fort are some of the other places which are being considered for setting up the screens. However, a decision would be taken only in the coming week after the response to the other screenings is observed, said G.R. Anil, Health Standing Committee Chairman. The Sports Working group has been given the onus of choosing the other spots for setting up the screens. ‘‘We have carried out talks with many sports clubs in the areas we have chosen. We would give them a screen and a projector and all the technical support. The club members would take care of the screening,’’ Anil said. During the previous football World Cup, the Corporation had set up screens at two centres. This time, with the local body elections round the corner, they have decided to make it big and bag some extra good remarks. The expenses for the screening would be met from the Sports Fund of the Corporation. url |

‘Pozhiyoor World Cup’ begins
Taking the soccer mania to its crescendo across the coastal belt of the capital, the fourth SMRC FIFA Model World Cup 2010 got off to a flying start at South Kollamcode in Pozhiyoor, a fishing hamlet on the outskirts of the city, on Wednesday.
The Jude Maradona-led Argentina (SMRC) team, the hot favourites to win the championship, thrashed Holland (Pathugramam) four goals to nil in the opening match. However, India (SMRC seniors) failed to inspire as they suffered a huge defeat to Cameroon (SMRC juniors) by the same margin. Brazilian (18 brothers, Kollamcode) fans had a tough day as France (Jose, Kollamcode) held them to a goalless draw. An energetic Nigeria (Marthanadam Thurai) secured their first points in the tourney as well. They held England (Thoothoor) team, led by Ragen Rooney, agin to a goalless draw in the final match of the opening day. Before the kick-off, there was a bike rally by players of all the teams along the coastal stretch from Adimalathurai to Pozhiyoor. Clad in the jerseys of respective countries and daubed in various colours on the faces and hair, they simply rocked the area, that even members of houses along the road were found waving their hands at their favourite teams. As many as 16 clubs are taking part in the event in the name of 16 countries wearing the respective jerseys and displaying their traditional strategies. Almost all aspects of the FIFA Football World Cup have been replicated with a ‘Pozhiyoor touch’. The other teams include Germany (EP Thurai), Italy (Chinnathurai), Spain (Rong Pozhiyoor), Korea (Eraimanthurai), Japan (Adimalathurai), Portugal (Colony), Chile (Puthiyathurai) and South Africa (Poothurai). http://expressbuzz.com/cities/thiruv...ns/182198.html |

Badminton Court Complex Opens In Kowdiar
The court complex, a contribution by the grandson of GV Raja, has three indoor courts
Kowdiar, Trivandrum: Sports minister M Vijayakumar inaugurated an indoor badminton court complex at Kowdiar Gardens today. The complex is the work of Aditya Varma Raja. Aditya Varma Raja comes from a family which has contributed a lot for the development of Trivandrum. His grandfather Goda Varma Raja, known as the ‘Father of Tourism in Kerala’ founded the sports council in 1954. He also took the initiative to start a golf club association here, an indoor stadium at Shanghumugham, a roller skating ring, the Veli boat club, and the Sreepadam stadium at Attingal. Now his grandson Aditya Varma Raja has built a badminton complex, with three indoor badminton courts. All the courts have been floored with imported wood. The court, which is usually used by serious badminton players, was the one at Jimmy George Indoor stadium. This is now unavailable because the stadium is being renovated. The court is officially opened to the public from today onwards. url |
