I actually can't spot any when looking at the index page.

I want Freundschaft, ja! We could trade collector cards of German and British castles.

Because that's what it was modelled after. It was built at a time when castles were obsolete, by a (little wacky) king that was in love with tales from "the old times"...

You do realize that fortresses were not built to please the eyes and without any kind of architecture in mind? They were built when most people lived in small houses and huts made out of straw, cow-crap and loam. They were military installations to ensure a dukes/king/princes control over his lands and estates which in turn bring him money through taxes. That's all they are, military installations. He built as much as he could afford and later he, his sons, their sons etc etc.. over hundreds of years added new things to improve the fortification. It's not Versailles or nymphenburg. What you think of are "Schl÷sser" which is translated into castle in English, but is not what is looked for in this thread.

^ Versailles et al do little for me aesthetically. Most of those palaces have dull exteriors, and their interiors are vulgar, overblown, and in hideous taste. I much prefer the organic and asymmetrical castles on this thread.

Even though Greek castles are not so impressive, and certainly most of them are older (almost ruins) than the ones in the rest of Europe, I'm gonna post a some here.

I fully agree with you. The castles also have a much longer history.

Too many palaces of a later era are posted here as well. Those fancy ornaments don't do much if you are under siege.

Even the earlier castles couldn't do much under siege because the cannonballs, in iron, replaced the stones during the 15th century. That's why castles changed in stilish ones.
But Catalans built the castel of Salses with walls 10 and even 12 meters in thickness instead of 7! A marvel. It is the transition between the medieval castle and the fortification with bastions.

Tbh honest German castles seem best. A lot of them also seem to have great locations.

Lots of them are situated in amazing settings indeed. Greece and Italy are the ones that could compete in this regard, but not when it comes to architecture.
