It was about diversity in British architecture in general which leads to the lack of it in castle architecture.

In the end you may find distinct styles regarding fomer royal houses, but other than that...
Just compare Brick Gothic castles they built in the Baltic region with Bavarian or Rhineland castles.
You won't find such tremendous differences in British castle architecture, whatever you may think.
As someone who lives in a former British colony, the city of Halifax was founded in 1749 and is the oldest city in the western hemisphere. European cities are much older in comparison; some dating back 700-1000 years or more. Castles were built for protection and to show authority, they often housed nobility or royalty. There was plenty of reason for castles in Europe.

When Europeans came to the New World they were dealing with a blank slate of land claimed by no one. They built forts for their troops and to defend the city from other coming Europeans. They had no need for an exquisite castle. There weren't any nobles or royalty coming across the ocean in 1749; it was a land-grab and a fort was a good way to show a claim. The Halifax Citadel (Fort George) was built to deter the French from an attacking from Cape Breton, where they had built their own fort at Louisbourg. It was also built for the possibility of attack from the Americans were becoming increasingly revolutionary.

The point is, castles and forts are distinct in that one is distinctly for defence while the other can be for both defence and aesthetics. This is why there are no dated castles in North America (that I know of, anyway).

Time for some Spanish castles. With the borders shifting all the time in the battle against the Moors there are medieval castles everywhere. I did not necessarily pick the best castles, but foremost the best images I could find.

Loarre. 11th century to resist the Moors. Known probably by foreigners for featuring in the movie Kingdom of Heaven.

Oh, now these are very good castles! ...Not like that German kitsch or British tastelessness. You know, I was addicted to a game called Stronghold and tried to look up similar castles in real life - but did not find much in Britain, France or Germany. That's because they were in Spain, all along!

^ Very nice (and teutonic in appearance ).

I'd like to see some more Italian castellos, as they're fantastically situated in most cases.
