By the by, I'd like to apologize for editing the post of "let forever be" as it wasn't appropriate in this case. But I expect some better manners in discussing other people's opinion, mates.

Not the most beautiful castle, but surely one of the most impressive defence lines i know. The 'Stelling van Amsterdam' was build between 1880 and 1920 and should have protected Amsterdam against invaders. When another country was invading the Netherlands, the farmlands around Amsterdam would have been flooded. And the hostile forces would have to find a way through the new swamps.

A little map

The flooded area

One of the many fortresses: Abcoude

And another one: Vijfhuizen

And a remote fortress: Pampus

I marked most of these fortresses on google maps!

- Well this was original Roman/Byzantine fortress, and at some point it was also called Akerman by the Turks.

The incident Erbse, the moderator of this section is referring to is post #238 (formerly). Erbse used his powers as a moderator to fake my post in which he claimed I was more annoying than herpes. His behaviour breached moderator rules. He pretended I wrote something which I did not and subsequently and unfairly banned me as a result.

I am glad you have apologised, admitted your guilt regarding your behaviour and removed the brig which you wrongfully placed on me. I hope that doesn't happen again and hope these threads/forums can remain places of civil discussion.

Nice castles everyone!!!!

Nice castle in Sintra - Portugal! It seems to have some influences of Jugendstil. How old is it?

Too bad you won't see them anymore in this topic. Somehow every forummer wants to promote his own country in his own new topic. Pretty nationalistic as usual in SSC.

I was addicted to that game as well!

A bit more than 150 years. It has an obvious influence of German romanticism since the designer was in fact German, that explains a lot about the look of the palace. I think the most recognizable styles in it are actually manuelino (Portuguese late gothic) and moorish-islamic/mudéjar though, exotic stuff for Germans I guess.

Just opposite of the Palacio da Pena in Sintra are the walls of the old moorish castle, sadly overlooked despite its freakin amazing shape and location.

The latter are way more spectacular imo. Palácio da Pena basically is a kitschy derivate from Neuschwanstein, quite a strange building.
Palacio Nacional in Sintra town is quite cool, too.
