What are (or were) Depots Nos. 1 & 2? Were they tram depots that are now closed or are they other depots for, say, buses and/or trolley buses?

Thanks in advance.
Try transphoto.ru - it has a nice database, especially concerning ex-USSR countries.

Just as BriedisUnIzlietne said:

Depot 6 "Imanta" - buses
Depot 7 "Tālava" - buses
With a note - Depot 4 is not closed. Since 2010 it doesn't serve any passanger trams. It's now used for road service vechicles.

The locations are such (with link to Google Maps):
Depot 1 - Ganību Dambis 32
Depot 2 - Jelgavas iela 37
Depot 3 - Fridriķa iela 2
Depot 4 - Tipogrāfijas iela 1
Depot 5 - Brīvības iela 191
Depot 6 - Kleistu iela 29
Depot 7 - Vestienes iela 35

A few "fun" facts.
Depot 5 was a mixed tram and trolleybus depot for the first years of trolleybus service in Riga (1947-... I currently can't find the exact year a seperate trolleybus depot was built). It was because the first (test) trolleybus route led along Klijānu iela (near the depot) from Brīvības iela till Miera iela. But even later when this line was closed and a regular trolleybus service began (on the current trolleybus route #1) the trolleybusses were hauled by trucks to and from this depot till the route end point on Valmieras iela.

Depot 1 originally was a small tram depot which got closed and later rebuild as a trolleybus depot.

Depot 4 is the smalles depot in Riga (and if I'm not mistaken the smalles in Baltic states).

Depot 3 was the temporary home for all prototype trams built in Riga by RVR. It haused two RVR-7, the only TR1 and one of two TR2. None of these series made it into mass production due to faulty electronics made in a Moscow factory. RVR-7 had 19 trams built, TR1 - one, TR2 - two.

Depot 5 is the home of our Retro Tram.

You can identify the Depot of a vechicle by looking at the first digit of the board number. For example 58066 = Depot 5. Before the renumbering in 2009 only trams and trolleybuses had such a system (even if the numbering was different, f.e. 1-609 = Depot 1. Such system was used only after the fall of USSR, before that none of the vehicles had visable identification of it's home depot.

Depot 2 was the last (in the world) to serve Škoda 12Tr. A trolleybus train consisting of two Škoda 9Tr trolleybuses. Only 481 such "trains" were built (Kiew - 296 trains used till 1994, Riga - 103 trains used till 2001, Tallinn - 30 trains used till 1984, Dnipropetrovsk - 22 trains, Sevastopol - 10 trains used till 1991, Kharkiv - 10 trains, Horlivka - 6 trains used till 1992, Simferopol - 3 trains, one train in Mariupol, Sukhumi and Yerevan).

Hope that helped a bit

And they aren't completely the same as the buses we already have (Solaris Urbino 18) ... they have a Škoda badge on the front, but try to teach that to the old lady at market (poeple from Riga will understand)

Or that will probably be covered by the city coat of arms

I guess that it probably WILL be covered by the coat of arms. And the body and interior will probably be exactly the same on both our new SU-18 buses and these trolleybuses. The best way to differentiate is the numberplates - trolleybuses don't have any. But checking whether the bus has a blue or white square at the bottom will still be too hard for the market lady

Although I can't pin down the exact location, I'd say it is Plzen where the manufacturer Skoda tests their buses in the streets.

Specially if they don't even look at the route number and only after they have complete the run for the only empty seat in the bus they ask on what route is this bus.

And let's not that start on those "special" ladies who mix a tram with a bus.

Yes, one of it already broke today and caused havoc on the main street. Typical Russian quality, what else can I say...

Why so much hatred?
It is normal for any new transport to have problems. Should I remind you Boeing 787 problems, Siemens Inspiro on fire (with passengers onboard!), Alstom Allegro train (Spb-Helsinki) troubles. And many other issues. You don't call it "typical american/german/french quality", don't you?
The problem is the fact that almost no system uses poles (but use pantographs), so Daugavpils is the first customer to have pole. Test-rides in Ust-Katav with pole instead of pantogtaph is impossible, that's the reason why large team from the factory arrived with the new tram to make all test rides and make evetyrhing work good.

Didn't BKM originally win the tender to supply these trams?

Well okay - but the Daugavpils' old KTM trams made in the same factory work fine with poles

Yes, but they couldn't deliver them on time. With huge delays only one tram was delivered so the contract with BKM was canceled. Now they have a contract with the Russian factory.
