ha, they removed logo of skoda from the front. I know we had that discussion before but now it is even more weird that they call this Skoda with Solaris name all over and "powered by Skoda" at the back.

And same answer as before - it's like we talk about a Volvo bus or a Mercedes bus. Or we can refer to it by body-builder. Both are correct.

That's interesting. I often wonder if trolleybuses have a longer lifecycle in service than diesel buses. I'm imagining one factor might be that the investment value in trolleybuses is higher, therefore they may want to get longer service out of them. Also, since electric traction is simpler and with less mechanical stresses and maintenance needs, perhaps they physically last longer?

For one - the Belorussian electrical equipment wasn't great. We have already taken out of service 8 of the 12 AKSM trolleybuses bought new in 1999 and 2001. And the remaining will be taken out of service very soon.

It seems that after all the Škoda 27Trs will enter service, we will have only 2 trolleybuses remaining from before 2003 - the two Solaris Trollinos from 2000 (unless they are going to be written off too).

Well those Belkomunmash trolleybuses were really a waste of money

One burnt down (here are the photos of the fire), the rest stood still for a year (or even more).
But to be honest - Riga was the first city to order a batch of those trolleybuses (production numbers are 2-12) and with that we were the first to see how bad they really are.
Test runs are one thing, but daily service is something else.

P.S.
Just FYI the only Belkomunmash AKSM 321 trolleybus in Riga (currently out of service) is also the prototype model. I mean this one.

Crash on Kleistu iela
1 dead and 10 hospitalized

On 17th december 2014 at about 18:30 local time a crash between a Rīgas Satiksme bus and a truck took place on Kleistu iela. Currently everything is still under investigation, but it seems that the truck driver drove into opposite lane and had a frontal hit with the bus.

The truck driver (born in 1946) died still locked in the cab. Bus driver (born in 1968) had to be cut out of the bus wreck and hospitalized. Also 9 other bus passengers were hospitalized 4 women and 5 men (the youngest is a boy born in 2008).

Other passengers got out of the bus without any help from the rescue personal. A total of 11 persons were injured.

81% of passengers satisfied with public transport in Rīga

Quote:
The results of the European Commission surveys about the quality of life in European cities (published in 2013) gives evidence that only residents of Helsinki, Vienna and London are more satisfied with public transport services than the residents of Riga

The rest of the article is kind irrelevant - it's just Leons Bemhens talking about our "increasingly popular electronic electronic payment system" (do we have a choice?), a system for opinion collection (*khem* Twitter) and "Rīgas acs" which is stilllllll in development.

Full article here, in case you do want to read it.

First "Day Without Pants" in Latvia

Sunday, 11.01.2015. was the first time when Riga took part in the "Day Without Pants". Even though we don't have a subway, we used our trams for this activity.

Happy days are over...

Rīgas Satiksme has decided that ticket prices have to be increased. The price, starting February the 1st, will increase almost twice -- from 0,60 € to 1,15 €. The ticket at the driver will cost 2,00 € instead of 1,20 €. The most expensive monthly ticket will increase from 40 to 50 € (this is still cheaper than in 2013). Car parking costs will also rise.

How do the Riga authorities justify such a rip-off ? They should favour the public transport, not discourage people from using it !

They justify it as self-expenses of a trip. Although there is a single ticket for any kind of distance so you can travel from 150 m (which is about the shortest distance between stops) to 35 kilometers (which is the longest bus route from end to end). But it's crazy - only half of the passengers pay full ticket price and the other half are students, pensioners and others who ride completely for free! With this new ticket price, if there are three people, it's cheaper to go by taxi than by bus!

And it's interesting that almost any other kind of transport in the city costs 70 cents per trip: the intercity buses, the city and intercity minibuses and even the trains. I do hope that people will choose these other modes of public transport but many don't even know that they exist. This change might also increase bike usage though.

Well actually it's not Rīgas Satiksme who decided to raise the price it's Ušakovs (mayor of Riga) who has "cut off" funding for Rīgas Satiksme. Last year half of the ticket price was "paid" by Riga City Council and now they simply don't have the money for that.

Yes. Also the electric traction equipment is lighter and produce less vibrations, which is good for structural... things.

Riga is really trying hard to destroy its Public transport system, isn't it?
Next chapter: We have to reduce frequency on most lines because of a lack of ridership. (too expensive)
The chapter after: We have to close down lines because no one is using them. (too expensive, too infrequent)
Final chapter: no one is using the syste at all, lets abolish it altogether (too expensive, too infrequent, bad coverage)

Fin!

Some schedule changes on tram line 6
Tram line 6 is the busiest public transport line in Rīga.

Service will be better at peak hours but worse at off-peak hours.

During morning peak there will be a tram every 4--5 minutes.
Currently it is 6--7 minutes.

During midday most trams will have a 9 minutes interval.
Currently it is 8 minutes.

During evening peak hours most trams will have a 4--6 minute interval.
Currently most trams have 5 or 7 minute intervals.

Two last services will be shortened to Stacijas laukums
These services leave city center at about 1:00 and 1:20 at night.

All in all the number of services is reduced by one.
