SWEDEN - Castles, Fortresses, Palaces and Ruins

Hello all...

After looking at the fantastic threads with castles from various european countries I have found inspiration to making a similar thread of my own. In this thread I have been thinking of collecting swedish castles, fortress, palaces and ruins.

The historic buildings like that in Sweden are in general not as big and a bit less extravagant compared to the ones more south in Europe. Afterall the population back then was just as it is today here. Rather small. Still they have the history and they have the beauty.

I intend to start to show what Sweden have to offer in the very south and then move myself forward up north. County by county.

Big thanks to www.slottsguiden.info, http://www.slottsguiden.se/, http://commons.wikimedia.org/ and www.wikipedia.org for pics and info. I will do my best to try to credit the source for pics from other websites.

Enjoy...

Lets start with the county in the very south. Skåne.

Trolleholm castle. The oldest parts of the castle dates back to 1538.

Marsvinsholms castle. Built 1644-1648. 1856-1857 was the castle reconstructed and with a second tower added.

Vittskövle castle. Built 1553-1577.

Malmö Castle (Swedish: Malmöhus, Danish: Malmøhus) is a fortress located in Malmö, Sweden. The first castle was founded in 1434 by King Eric of Pomerania. This structure was demolished in early 16th century, and a new one was built in its place 1530s by King Christian III of Denmark.

Torup castle. Built 1540. Reconstructed 1602-1630. Though the history for this place dates back to as early as around the year 980.

Vrams Gunnarstorp castle. Built 1633-1644.

Kronovall castle. Built 1760 and reconstructed 1896.

Kulla gunnarstorp castle. The "new" castle since there is a older one located right next to it.

Alnarps castle. Built 1862.

Borgeby castle. Its supposed to be around 1000 years.

Häckebergs castle. Built 1873-1875 though the history for that place dates back to around 1520.

source: Travelgatesweden.se

Skarhult castle. History dates back to late 1400 but the castle we can see today was built 1560.

Sövdeborg castle. Built 1597

Örup castle. Its not known when the caslte was built but its mentioned the first time 1437.

Sofiero castle. Built by King Oscar II while he´s still was the crownprince.

Next up is the county of Halland.

Gåsevads castle. Built late 1700. Though the history for this place dates back 700 years. In the year 1531 was aparantly the first castle burnt down by dutch people.

I have a hard time to find good pix from other Halland castles so I will continue with the county of Småland. Located east of Halland.

Kalmar castle. has played a crucial part in Swedish history since its initial construction as a fortified tower in the 12th century. King Magnus Ladulås ordered the construction of a fortress around the tower in the 1280s, and was further expanded in the centuries that followed.
One of the most significant political events took place at Kalmar Castle in 1397, when the Kalmar Union was formed - a union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden

Teleborg castle. One of the "newest" castles of sweden. It was finnished 1900.

Brahehus castle ruin. Built 1637. Destroid in a fire 1708.

Lets continue to the island of Öland. Located in the baltic sea east of Småland.

Borgholm castle ruin. The history for this place dates back nearly 800 years. The ruin we can see today was built 1569-1593. Today its a popular tourist attraction but also a place for concerts during the summer.

The way the castle looked 400 years ago.

Eketorp ringfort. The original fort was built about 1600 years ago, but what we see today was much rebuilt about 30 years ago. All with the same tecnology like they had back then at the iron age.

Now I continue with the county of Västergötland. Located north of Småland and Halland.

Koberg castle. Built early 1600.

Läckö castle with the oldest parts from 1298. Around 250 rooms inside.

Source: marinas.com

Mariedal castle. Built 1650.

Elvsborgs fort. Located in the harbour of Gothenburg. It was built 1650.

Foto by: Ingmar Jernberg

Börstorps slott. Built 1641.

Hellidens castle. I havent found out the actual age. It must been built before 1907 because that is the year of this picture.

Lets jump over the border to Bohuslän county.

This is the ruins of Bohus fort/castle. And as you can see, its been thrue alot.

And here is how its supposed to look like 1658.

Carlstens fort. located in the little town of Marstrand in the western archipelago.

Foto by: P H Kongstad,Furulund,2006

EDIT: I was wrong about the age for Koberg castle. Its actually built early 1600.

The midevil town of Visby located on the island of Gotland offers plenty of nice ruins. Mostly church ruins.

Built 1411 right next to Visby´s old defence wall was the castle of Visborg. Unfortunetaly it was destroid by danes in 1676. This is parts of what remains today.

And this is how it once looked like.

Stora sundby castle. The history for this place dates back to 13th century when a fort was located here. But the castle we can see today was built around 1830. The castle is a private recidence.

The castle is built with a theme. The calander.....
52 rooms... symbolising the number of weeks in a year.
12 small towers... symbolising the number of months in a year.
4 big towers... symbolising the number of seasons in a year.
365 windows... symbolising the number of days in a year

Nyköpingshus. With the oldest parts from sometime between 1100-1200. And in the begginning it was more of a fortress. Later it was rebuilt into a castle. One of the biggest in sweden at the time. Unfortunately it got badly damaged in a fire 1665. It was never rebuilt but much of the bricks was taken here for the new royal palace in Stockholm. This is what remains today.
