First of all, thanks hellospank for the wonderful photos.

Second, concerning the discussion of the economic situation in Romania, I had an interesting conversation with a young Romanian this past week on a train between France and Italy. He was an impressive guy, speaking pretty good French and Italian. He said he was in France to work, because in Romania there was none to be found. He also said that corruption is a huge problem over there. For me it is interesting because I look at pictures of Bucharest and I see a beautiful, vibrant city. But the truth is that you can have a beautiful, vibrant city with high unemployment (like Algiers), and also ugly cities with plenty of jobs (like in the USA during the 1990s)(not that I don't like American cities, but compared to the beauty of Europe...)

And concerning cars, we have the same issue in Bamako. There are expensive luxury cars everywhere, even as people have difficulty feeding their families. The rich care more about showing everyone how wealthy they are than investing in the country.

Perception of corruption in Romania is a bit higher than it really is.Romanians are a bit paranoid, and complain a lot.But when it comes to doing something regarding this, they just go along with it,a bunch of hypocrites.
Concerning poverty, there are richer and poorer areas.Generally poverty decreases from E to W,with the exception of Constanta,Bucharest and a few others.I can't judge how poor the country really is,cause this is perceived very differently across the world,I guess it's at anyone's call, depending on their standards.

I heard that Romania has the highest population of Porsche Cayenne in Europe. At least before the crisis started.

Anyway, interesting photos from an interesting city.

Bucharest definitely lost its appeal after the 1977th earthquake and following
demolition by Caucescu. But still it looks like a vibrant city.
Absolutely there is no reason to feel ashamed of.

BTW, for me Romania, which gave the world Ionesco, Mircea Eliade
and Emile Cioran, remains intellectual superpower. That's what
counts, not the pointless GNP.
