All Places & All Faces of Riga

I started this thread already 2 years ago in Nordic & Baltic section and I slowly collect the pictures from all Riga here. At the same time I'm making such collection on my web-page too. I like to document the urban environment by taking pictures of it and show them to those who are interested. So, I hope there will be at least some

I am organizing this thread by geographical principle - it means, every time when I post here will be pictures from one particular area in Riga, and I will always show it in the map.

This time - triangular area between railway, Gogoļa and Dzirnavu streets (approximately 0,2 km2) that is neighboured to centre in southern direction. Here you see it in the map (small red triangle):

1. Facade of apartment building next to Transport ministry of Latvia and railway

2. Wealthy people live here, the courtyard is full of great cars

3. View to that square beside that courtyard. Science Academy highrise dominates the view around this district - you will see it from some other angles in next pictures also

4. Looking back to railway. City centre over there. Reval Hotel Latvia overtops.

5. Outside the centre, but - no escape from great architecture in Riga!

6.

7. Here you see how the railway delimits this area. In the right direction trains goes to Daugavpils and Russia - Moscow, to the left - to Jelgava and Liepāja.

8. Two massive apartment gigants from different times. First one - newer...

9. ... second - older:

10.

11. View to the Puškina street to Daugava riverside direction

12. Some boxy, depressing and boring looking apartment building

13.

14.

15. Dzirnavu street southern part. Further to north this street goes through the centre, cross it south-north.

16. Even here, some 1 km from Riga Central Market, is building which resembles the style of market warehouses

17.

18. Dzirnavu street again

19. Quite weird - wooden fence from one side, masonry wall from other, building in the middle

20.

41. Once - a proud king, now - a beggar that struggles for survival. Luxury has gone, but the greatness and charm is still there:

42.

43. That old warehouse complex from other side:

44. Dress for pregnant womans, fortunetelling & astrology salon and hairdressing salon - all in this lovely wooden house

45. Some playing with reflections:

46. Orthodox church in Gogoļa street - built in 1818. Construction costs in terms of money of that times - 116 000 roubles.

47. Finally Science Academy by itself:

48.

No doubt about it. Of course, this is poor district, but I'm not going to lie - in Riga, there are many neglected areas.

Time for another area exploration in Riga. This time it will be remote and ugly area not far from Riga south-eastern border - Pļavnieki district and part of Dārzciems district, consisted mainly of warehouses, industrial buildings and commieblocks. So, don't wait anything aesthetic and beautiful, more to common post-Soviet urban views. Area is quite big - around 2 sq.km, but not too many pictures, because not much at least slightly interesting to see there. Here you see area in the map (red - active exploration area, blue - previous shown areas).

1. We start with look to Katlakalna street, our way leads forward to it, where in the background you can see Pļavnieki commie district:

2. This street is surrounded by extensively built-up area, where ugly Soviet time storehouse & industrial buildings... (like these)

3.

4.

5. ...mixes with much better looking new ones:

6.

7. While in Bauska I surprisingly met real horse feeding in the meadow, here I found nothing better than this one:

8. Pļavnieki commieblock wall over there:

9. Here Katlakalna street becomes A. Saharova street, local supermarket on the corner:

10. We're coming closer to Pļavnieki commies

11. So called "french project" highrises up to 18 storeys high built of in-situ reinforced concrete. The casting design was commissioned in France, the buildings in this series were built floor by floor, filling the castings with concrete.

12. Don't know what's these massive pipes.

13. I like they

14. In this picture looks like those 2 trucks competes in streetrace It wasn't that, thank God!

15. Those pipes are seemingly endless:

16. The city is constructing new commieblocks here...

17. ...beside the old ones:

18. If I had to choose where to live in this district that would be one of these 2 apartment highrises:

19. Weird - cosy wooden restaurant in the middle of concrete jungle:

20.

23. Lubānas street with view to TV Tower, which is 4 km away (air distance)

24. Just a nice early-spring flowers in the garden (with not so nice housekeeper who came to curse with me about photographing):

25. The End

it's time to explore the 3rd place of Riga in this thread - most pictures from 2008, some older. This time it will be approx. 2,5 km of Barona street, one of the most lively and main streets in Riga centre, as you see in the map: [/B]

previously shown areas

active exploration zone

1. We start with one older picture from 2005, which shows the one end of Barona street, where it connects with Old Town and becomes Audēju street:

2.

3. Buildings on the opposite side of Verman park - last year's picture.

4. Elizabetes & Barona street crossing, another one from 2007:

5. Now, new pictures. This is A. Kalnina street - only some 200 metres long street perpendicular to Barona street, it connects Barona and Marijas streets

6. Hotel building on the corner:

7. Members of Hare Krishna movement made procession that day, walking on the Barona street and singing Hare Krishna, Hare Rama:

8. Here you can appreciate the amount of people on Barona street - of course, it's not Tokyo or New York, but people are enough to annoy a photographer who wants to take a pictures of architecture (however cars are much more annoying), and also enough to make happy a photographer who wants to show the city's vibrant side:

9. I wasn't the only one who took pictures of Barona street - 2 girls had the same idea:

10. Trying to get the best angles... But what's so interesting there?

11. Here comes the answer:

12. Another one mark of Barona street - hundreds of shops' signs. Barona street is one of the main shopping streets in Riga.

13. One of the posh class architecture examples, especially beautiful are those two gryphons on the top, imo:

14. Another one "mini-street" - Pērses street. Here you see how the Soviets managed to ruin even places in the centre of Riga - notice that ugly monster on the right:

15.

16. Barona street is interesting also because of various levels of the height of buildings - 6-7 floor masonry giants mixed up with 2-3 floor wooden houses. This is noticeable also in other streets in Riga centre, but especially in Barona street:

17. Beautiful place where to sit down and rest:

18. Tram route on the Barona street will be the first in Riga where old trams will be replaced with new low-floor trams:

19. This is view to Blaumaņa street - I couldn't resist to post it

20.

21.

22. Two grand streets meets one another - Barona & Lāčplēša street crossing

23.

24.

25. Some modern accents - this is "Barona center", supermarket:

26. People who tried to set up Rubik's cube sitting in the middle of the busy street's pavement!

27. One of Barona streets' courtyards. Old meets new. I have passion to Riga courtyards - many of them are so charming.. You suddenly arrive in the completely different world:

28.

29. Cafe's and bars by the side. Double Coffee is latvian coffee house company, which has 21 coffee houses in Riga, 8 in Vilnius, 5 in Tallinn, 5 in Kiev and 1 in Minsk. It is called as "the Baltic's answer to Starbuck's" by the "Business Week" magazine.

30. Great building above it:

32. Barona street could be the most-wooden street in central Riga, here is even small wooden section, where several wooden buildings located the side

33.

34.

35.

36.

37.

38.

39.

40. Another one interesting courtyard:

43.

44.

45. Gerken's shopping centre - low-cost shopping. Gerkens was one of the first well-known millionaires in Latvia in nineties. He comes himself from the working class, and as a tradesman he started provide products for those who can't afford to go to Armani or Benetton.

46. We go further, to the eastern end of Barona street - shops, cars and people here are much fewer, the atmosphere more calm.

47.

48. This is the place where Rotermani builds whole new section - until last Christmas here stood Sport Palace. Now the works is going to construct here entertainment, shopping & living etc. city's block.

49.

50. When looking at these houses I start wondering - why so few buildings are in green color?

51.

52.

53.

54. At last picture my cam accu discharged and I couldn't finish my tour of Barona street - some 700 metres remained for other time. But I will show you one my older picture of Barona street end with the impressive orthodox church in the background:
