That's a hell of a lot of advertising in that 'Hobbit' station.

Every square inch of the station is covered!

Line 9 - New Paco de Lucía station, under construction.

It should open by 2015, and in the near future will have a connection with Cercanías Renfe lines C3, C7, and C8.
This station will be located north of the current terminus Mirasierra, in northern Madrid.

Madrid Metro to introduce in-tunnel advertising
1 AUG, 2014

Madrid Metro has approved a pilot scheme to install in-tunnel advertising between two stations on its underground rail network.

An LED advertising system will be installed between the stations Nuevos Ministerios and Colombia on Line 8, allowing video advertisements to be beamed to passengers onboard trains passing through the tunnels.

The two-year trial is expected to generate around €400,000 in additional income for Madrid Metro.

It is the first time in-tunnel advertising technology has been tested in Spain.

Digital Underground Media will fit the new system. The advert is activated as a train passes through sensors in the tunnel. The sensors tell the LED pillars how fast the train is going so the system can sequence the images in sync with the passengers on board

Jeez... Is the Madrid Metro the most commercialised/advert-covered system in the world? I think they were the first to give naming rights to stations, the first to do whole station coverage (like with The Hobbit) etc. Too much in my opinion...

Madrid municipality has a public debt of 24 to 25 billion euros (3,8 million per inhabitant), I'm surpriced they haven't covered the entire city in advertising.

But I do agree on the advertising, the Hobbit thing was ridiculous and probably had a negative effect on the target audience, less people going to the theaters because of over advertising

I think it would be too much if it were in every station, but that´s far from happening.

Although the Vodafone thing was maybe a bit over the top.

On the other hand, like gincan says, Madrid is rather indebted, so any source of income is welcome.

It depends.

If you are outside the circle of the line 6 (central Madrid), and you have a Cercanías Renfe station at a decent distance (2-3 metro stations away), you can get by.

There is one particular movement which is horrible to do, though.
The one from Eastern Madrid to Southwestern Madrid.
Try to travel by metro from Atocha to pretty much anywhere in Eastern Madrid? Then be ready for a long trip.

It will be the corridor for the next extensions of line 11, north from Plaza Elíptica.

It is already planned, although as the country is in crisis it has been postponed, but we are aware of the plans to extending line 11 from Plaza Elíptica to Atocha Renfe, as the phase 1 of the extension.

From Atocha Renfe, the line would go in further phases, to Sáenz de Baranda, then La Elipa, Ascao, Ciudad Lineal, Arturo Soria, Atalaya (new station in the intersection with line 8), Chamartín (using two of the yet-unused platforms), Barrio del Pilar, and Avenida de la Ilustración.

Once that extension of line 11 is open, Madrid will certainly need little to no new big extensions.

When will that be done? God knows...

Last news (november 2014)

Metro:

-Line 9 extension from Mirasierra to Paco de Lucía. To be opening sometime in 2015. On time.

Cercanías (commuter rail):

-Upgrade of Torrejón de Ardoz station (lines C2 and C7). Advancing.

-Works have started for the new Soto del Henares station (lines C2 and C7), which will be located between Torrejón de Ardoz and La Garena stations. Just started.

-Project of extension of line C4 beyond Colmenar Viejo to Soto del Real advancing. It's quite easy as it's on an existing, almost disused line. The two existing stations (Manzanares-Soto del Real, and Soto del Real), would be massively upgraded, particularly the latter.

Fortunatelly they know better how to divide numbers, so they can easily cut 3 decimals from per capita debt

Metro and commuter rail news.

Metro line 9 extension between Mirasierra and new Paco de Lucía station to open before the end of March.

The new Paco de Lucía station will have a connection with Cercanías Renfe commuter trains Mirasierra station in the near future (not now yet, Mirasierra Cercanías station is still under construction and won't open at the same time as Paco de Lucía metro station, it could open before Christmas though).

Source (in Spanish): Vía Libre

=====================================

On the other hand, the works at the new Soto del Henares station are rather advanced, and it will also open before Christmas.
This new station is located on lines C2 and C7, between Torrejón de Ardoz and La Garena stations.
