Exactly, so i cant understand why when we talk about spanish infraestructures automatically these kind of comments are done. Spanish forumers are tired and fed up of them. It's a provokation
Anyway, so sorry for my posts. Hope we can talk about how great the madrid metro is!

Of course it's a provocation - and an easy one if all Spanish forumers keep responding to it so vehemently...

So do I - it's an impressive system and the rate of expansion is even more impressive!

Are all extensions that are under way now going to be ready until the end of June 2007? There is a chance that I visit Madrid then and I would like to see the network completed.

I just came back from a 5 week vacation in Spain (Wonderful country!) and I had the chance to ride the impressive metro in Madrid quite a few times. What struck me odd was that the trains run to the LEFT like in the UK. Heavy rail does not. AVE, for example, runs to the right. Even the escalators in the Metro run opposite (Rightside down, leftside up) . Can anyone answer why? Thanks!

I am not sure Dreamliner.....but i think it´s because some english companies were the one that made the first line more than 100 years ago....and they just used the english method.....

I found this map on the net with a possible extension of the 11 line.

We have had a big debate in Madrid about the decision of changing the format of the Metro map. The new one is more schematic, so you don't have an idea of the real distances between stations.

What's your opinion?

The new one.

PDF format

A map made by a Spanish forumer (dirdam). He uses a similar format to the old map, and adds new Metro lines built. He also includes the train lines (which don't appear in any official Metro map).

The new metro map hurts my eyes, it's horrible, i far prefer that map made by dirdam, a fantastic work.

@Dee Hinnov: yep, that's the idea for the extension of that line (11), we don't know exactly when it's gonna be approved...

Problem with this map is that it takes diagrammaticism to its extreme - and way too far in my opinion.
I don't really think metro travelers feel the need for a geographically correct map. They DO feel the need, though, for a legible one. This proposed map, consisting solely of 90 degree angles, doesn't really help in that. Besides the huge geographic distortion (travelers don't really care about geography to a certain extent), this has two other reasons:

1) too many bends and unnecessary changes of direction (see line 5, for example, with 13 angles - compared to the 8 on today's map), making a line harder to follow;

2) compression of the lines in the east of the city (2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9) - making them hard to distinguish.

This map is too 'extreme' and therefore too distracting to act as an adequate itinerary planner. Just keep the present-day map - it's one of the best map designs around.
