They've had planning permission for nearly a decade to knock down the North stand and increase to 51,000!

There are plans to redevelop the North Stand. It was made in the 70s and is rather ugly from the outside! But they plan to keep to the original as much as possible. Randy Lerner (current owner) made a lot of changes, but they are all on the traditional side. For example outside the holte end was recently re-vamped to be made like an original feature which was present at trinity road until the 80s. I will see if I can find some old photos of the ground.

Coventry City named as Olympic football venue

Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena has been selected as the new Midlands venue for Olympic Football matches by the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG).

As part of the deal the 32,000 seater ground will be temporarily re-named the City of Coventry Stadium and all branding will be removed for Olympic matches.

Coventry is the last venue to be announced by LOCOG after the original Midlands venue, Villa Park, had to be replaced due to planned development work.

Speaking of their selection Seb Coe, LOCOG Chairman, said: 'The City of Coventry Stadium is a great venue, and will be an excellent host for Football matches for the London 2012 Olympic Games. It is ideally located in the centre of England and the city already has strong links with London 2012. I congratulate Coventry and extend my thanks to all the Midlands clubs who applied to be a venue. All were a very good standard, and this shows the excellent standards of football stadia in this country'

Daniel Gidney, Chief Executive of the Ricoh Arena, said: 'We are looking forward enormously to staging Olympic football in Coventry. This is a great honour and we are proud to be involved with the Games. We have worked hard over the last few months to prepare our bid and I would like to thank all our partners and organisations involved for their support.'

From the above I Imagine work on the new North Stand at Villa Park will take place during the summer of 2012?

Good news for both clubs.

This kinda sucks that Villa Park will no longer be one of the football venues for the 2012 Summer Olympics. I had considered writing an angry letter to the Committee to reinstate Villa Park whether they go ahead with the expansion or not. But now that they have the best replacement they can find, the inexpandable Ricoh Arena. If that stadium's naming rights deal expires, it should revert permanently to City of Coventry Stadium. Also in Manchester, Old Trafford should opt out of the tournament and be replaced with the City of manchester Stadium.

Whether or not it'll actually end up like the images below is still anyone's guess, though.

The facade for the old trinity stand looked a real beaut as well. Disappointing that it couldn't have been incorporated into the new stand.

Like what? Have you actually seen many of the stadiums in england? This is one of the best there is.

Clubs in Britain dont get hands out from the local authorities for stadiums such as those in france.
