Whitechapel work prepares station for Crossrail boost
09 June 2015

Major upgrade work is taking place at Whitechapel as the station prepares to become a new modern transport hub with the arrival of Crossrail services.

The addition of Crossrail services in 2018 will be a huge boost for the area with up to 24 trains an hour carrying up to 1,500 passengers between Paddington and Whitechapel in peak times.

This will provide passengers with a frequent service to Heathrow, the West End and Canary Wharf, radically reducing journey times and boosting jobs and the local economy

...

This will mean services on parts of the London Overground East London line will not operate from Saturday 25 July to Tuesday 28 July and Saturday 1 August to Sunday 2 August

Go-ahead for Southall Crossrail station upgrade
Fri 12th June 2015, 12:50

Ealing Council has approved plans for a major overhaul of Southall station as part of the Crossrail programme

Vinci will start work this summer as part of its £100m contract to upgrade all the stations on the western surface section of the Crossrail route

Bennetts Associates has designed an elegant glass and steel structure that will let in natural light, creating a bright, airy and welcoming environment for passengers.

A new forecourt will make it much easier for passengers to get in and out of the station and avoid congestion at the entrance

Demolition begins at Bermondsey. When complete, Charing Cross trains will arrive at top left, dive down, and run on a new railway diagonally top left to bottom right of the picture. Thameslink trains will arrive at top right, and pass over the Charing Cross lines as they head towards the centre- bottom of the picture. Both existing (and now disused) viaducts, middle and right, will be partly demolished.

Old Oak Park: Car dealership’s giant site ‘can be new Little Venice’
13:11, 16 June 2015

The world’s largest second-hand car dealership is to be turned into a “new Little Venice” with three-quarters-of-a-mile of canalside cafés, restaurants and parks under a £5 billion plan announced today.

The ambitious vision was revealed by Cargiant, which occupies a 46-acre site between the Grand Union Canal and Willesden Junction station.

It is by far the biggest stretch of land in the hands of a single private owner in Britain’s largest regeneration zone.

The scruffy windswept site would be renamed Old Oak Park and turned into a new town with 9,000 homes, a high street, public squares, schools, health centres, offices and a new Overground station called Hythe Road, as well as the canal frontage

Bombardier wins London Overground EMU contract
19 Jun 2015

UK: Transport for London announced on June 19 that it had selected Bombardier Transportation to supply 45 four-car electric multiple-units to operate London Overground services. The order includes an option for up to 249 additional cars, to be used for train lengthening and possible future extensions of the Overground network. The £260m contract is subject to the statutory 10-day standstill period before signing. CAF, Hitachi and Siemens had also been shortlisted for the contract.

The high-density air-conditioned trains with wide gangways are to be built at Bombardier’s Derby factory for entry into service from 2018; 31 will run only on 25 kV overhead electrification and the rest will be dual-voltage to enable them to run on third-rail power supply too.

Eight trainsets would be used to operate the Gospel Oak – Barking route, currently operated with two-car diesel multiple-units. Electrification of this route is due to be completed in 2017. A further 30 would replace the fleet of Class 315 and Class 317 EMUs on the West Anglia routes from Liverpool Street, which were transferred to the Overground operating concession on May 31, and one would be used on the Romford – Upminster line. Six EMUs are to be put into service on the remaining Overground routes

CROSSRAIL UNVEILS DESIGNS FOR NEW STATION BUILDING AT WEST EALING
Friday 19th June 2015

Designs for a new station building at West Ealing have been submitted to Ealing Council as part of a major overhaul of the station for Crossrail

The proposals, designed by Bennetts Associates, are for a bright, modern, spacious new ticket hall. The glass and steel structure will let in natural light and will be surrounded by a large canopy. The new building will be located on Manor Road to the northwest of the existing station building.

A range of other major improvements will be made to the station, including:
  • A new footbridge with new lifts to provide step-free access to every platform
  • The creation of a new bay platform for trains on the Greenford branch line
  • Platform extensions so the station can accommodate the new 200m long Crossrail trains
  • New lighting, customer information screens, station signage, help points and CCTV.
The improvement works will be carried out by Network Rail. From the end of 2017 the station will be run by Transport for London as part of London’s integrated transport network

The deadline seems a bit tight for a December opening. I was meaning to go near Lea Bridge to see if any work had been done.
