First ETCS-controlled train runs through London
Tuesday, December 15, 2015

FOR the first time a train has operated under ETCS with cab signalling through central London marking six years of development by Network Rail (NR) for the Thameslink upgrading project

The successful test runs were conducted during track possessions on two weekends using a specially-equipped class 313 EMU operating between Kentish Town, St Pancras, Farringdon, Blackfriars and Elephant & Castle. NR says a crucial aspect of the testing was switching between conventional lineside signalling and ETCS Level 2 cab signalling at Elephant & Castle

If the previous franchisee were still in place, could one say "the First awakens?"

Construction of the ventilation shaft at the east end of the station box. There will be no public access from this site of the station - too bad for people from the Plumstead area... Views from Arsenal Way and Plumstead Road.

New Borough rail viaduct was brought into service as part of London Bridge station redevelopment. Viaduct was built back in 2011, but was without tracks citing LB configuration. Services to trains to and from Charing Cross are to be restored in August:

Rail bosses have unveiled the largest ever rail map of London, showing the full extent of the capital’s Oyster sprawl – a region extending all the way from Gatwick to Hertford East

TfL’s latest map of the capital’s rail services reaches far beyond the M25 and covers a 50-mile diameter.

As well as displaying the latest Tube map update, itself only revealed on Monday, the map includes National Rail services – colour-coded by the firm that operates them

The routes should be numbered. The mess with the long names are very inconvenient. Plus the branches on many lines. A nightmare!

Certainly the Overground lines should be more distinguished from each other, however it doesn't have to be numbers (letters and names are other options).

Though I'm sure we are all agreed that if it is names, it shouldn't be the current names they have!

Crossrail revamp for Whitechapel
12 JAN, 2016

Work begins this week on the redevelopment of the 140-year-old Whitechapel London Overground and Underground station in preparation for Crossrail.

New Crossrail platforms, which are located in new tunnels to the north of Whitechapel station, will be integrated with the existing station. The ticket hall will also be expanded and lifts will be installed connecting all platforms from street level.

From January 18, passengers will have to use a temporary entrance to access the station as the project ramps up

Those are two key findings of a study for the county council examining ways to get the maximum benefit for Surrey’s businesses and commuters from the proposed railway.

Plans for the cross-London line currently take in Shepperton, Epsom, Hampton Court, Chessington South and Surbiton stations on its southern tip.

With Transport for London’s latest Crossrail 2 consultation [now closed], the report reveals:
  • Up to 17 minutes would be cut from a journey to central London if Crossrail 2’s Epsom line is extended to Dorking
  • Stretching the line from Surbiton to Woking would cut journey times by up to six minutes at less well-served stations on the route like West Byfleet, Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames
  • Overcrowding would be cut by freeing up space on the South West Mainline tracks for up to seven extra trains an hour.

Surrey County Council’s deputy leader Peter Martin said:
“Crossrail 2 is vital for commuters and businesses – not only will the planned railway reduce overcrowding, it will boost the economy in Surrey, London and way beyond.

“With four Surrey train services among the top 10 most overcrowded and more than 130,000 people already travelling into London daily from the county, we will use this study to do all we can to ensure the county’s rail network keeps pace with rising passenger demand and economic growth.”
The report’s findings [PDF below] form the basis of the council’s response to the consultation on the next steps for the project.

They show a “strong evidence base” for supporting a Crossrail 2 route serving stations to Woking and “potentially a case” for extending the railway from Epsom to Dorking.

Two trains from Woking were among the four Surrey services named among the most overcrowded in England and Wales by the Department for Transport.

[Below] is a table comparing Crossrail 2 and current journey times in minutes.
