Suvarnabhumi among busiest in January

Suvarnabhumi was one of the top five airports in Asia Pacific and the Middle East by passenger volume in January, says Airports Council International (ACI).

Beijing was No.1 with more than 6 million passengers. The other four with more than 4.5 million passengers each were Tokyo Haneda, Suvarnabhumi, Hong Kong and Dubai.

January saw 4.99 million passengers through Suvarnabhumi, up by 12.9% from a year earlier, according to figures compiled by Airports of Thailand Plc.

The growth was due largely to budget airline traffic shifting from flood-ravaged Don Mueang and an organic increase spurred by high-season travel demand.

Both factors have worsened crowding at Suvarnabhumi, which has been operating beyond its capacity for a year now.

ACI, the global association of airports, said Asia Pacific began the new year with a robust increase in passenger traffic even as air freight traffic remained sluggish.

Asia Pacific recorded year-on-year passenger growth of 9.2% in January, while the Middle East recorded 11%. Abu Dhabi, Jakarta, Hong Kong and Guangzhou all posted gains of more than 15% in passenger numbers for the month.

As for air freight traffic, primarily due to the Chinese New Year holiday occurring one month earlier than usual, Asia-Pacific airports recorded a decrease of 12.6% in January. Middle East airports showed an increase of 4.4%.

The five airports in the region with the highest air freight throughput in January were Hong Kong, Shanghai's Pudong, Seoul's Incheon, Dubai and Singapore.

Patti Chau, ACI's regional director, said Asia Pacific and the Middle East recorded positive results in passenger traffic last year, increasing by 5.5% and 7.6%, respectively.

The positive trend looks set to continue as Asia Pacific remains a key driver of global passenger traffic growth.

Air freight traffic, however, looks less promising. Mrs Chau expressed concern that a shroud of uncertainty still hung over the global air freight market.

ไม่ใช่เขาไม่แก้ครับ

แต่ที่มันเกิดเรื่อง เพราะอยู่ในช่วงปรับปรุงพื้นที่ ที่ควรจะเสร็จตั้งนานแล้ว แต่ดันล่าช้าเพราะน้ำท่วม ทำให้ไม่สามารถขนส่งวัสดุเข้ามาได้

อดใจรออีกหน่อย เขาว่ามิถุนาก็เสร็จแล้วนี่ (ไม่แน่ใจว่าเสร็จทั้งหมดหรือเปล่า)

สาเหตุที่ต้องมาสร้าง ตม ใหม่ เพราะแบบที่ออกนั้นออกตั้งแต่เมื่อ 20 กว่าปีที่แล้ว ซึ่งสมัยนู่นการตรวจยังไม่ต้องรัดกุมเท่าสมัยนี้ เลยทำพื้นที่ไว้ไม่เยอะ และไม่เพื่อไว้สำหรับตรวจความปลอดภัย

แต่พอหลังเหตุการณ์ 911 การบินก็เปลี่ยนไป การตรวจความปลอดภัยกลายเป็นสิ่งสำคัญ ซึ่งลองสังเกตุสนามบินที่สร้างทีหลัง เขาจะเพื่อพื้นที่ตรงนี้ไว้เยอะมากๆ

When will it be finished ? I'm going back to Thailand for a holiday soon and when I come back I don't really want to suffer the immigration torture.

Probably during the low season again, as Uno said. The project has been delayed due to logistical disruptions from the flooding. I think it was supposed to be ready by this peak season.

Even when the new passport control is completed, there's not much to relieve the inbound immigration congestion, is there? It seems like there's a manpower issue as much as a facilities issue. My question is, why aren't they switching back to the single-file snake lines that I believe they once tried before? I prefer that method a lot more than having to pick which line to enter and then facing the consequences of mistakenly picking a slow line. The immigration officers can also more easily take breaks as needed in that kind of configuration, without having to shut down an entire line of people.

That has to be IAD! I never flew into the US through this airport, but it looks much nicer than LAX

I don't think this kind of queue differs from what we have in Thailand, though. Around 10AM, which is the peak time at LAX when flights from Asia land, the lines were so long, and it was the officers who made choices who is in which line, and I ended up in the slowest one...
