Painful contradiction to the name of this thread... but news are news.
Producer of log-houses "Super Bebris" is going to leave Latvia for United States. Reason - (no) support policy for industry and wide possibilities in USA. They were successful exporters until 2008 when they started to run into huge losses. Their production facility is near Limbazi. This is a sad loss because they were innovative producers with more than 100 employed people. http://www.bebris.lv/eng/

But sadly they're not only ones. Several more producers have talked about going away.

Unless their head office is located here and the company's capital is of our country, I think there shouldn't be much concern, though that might worsen the unemployment situation..

USA and here are two separate markets, there is no commercial point to export material to USA and other direction to Europe. Know-how is another thing. Wood is coming from Russia. Not enough from Latvia to support development maybe... Anyway, I would keep both strong feet in both continents. But I understand that Latvians have not the pride of their country because the spirit has been broken and now, it is an individual mentality. I hope the new generation of entrepreneurs will understand that people and skills are needed for development, not only money and law. In America they will discover the price of the wages, the different level of quality! Business is not money, money is result of a good business model. If they leave, some other will probably take the space left. For me this exodus is not made yet.

"GroGlass" today announced that they have started export of unique innovative product:
- "Artglass" - specific glass for artworks in museums. So far they got orders from Germany, Italy, Sweden and USA and expect many more. This glass got specific coating which eliminates glare, protects artworks from UV light and lets to see the true colors of artwork. It provides also protection from impact. Huge success expected!

How do you think, Latvian NOKIA is invented?! The aim of our policy, as you might know, is to create something on national basis so that to make a brand of it and to become a rich country!
So, could this be it, or it's just the first step to success?

would be great to compare ratio per inhabitant. This would change the view... Also if we would have a graphic of import-exports. We would see who are the real winners and loosers... We know that our balance is negative, we import more than we export. It is extremely bad...

Germany and Netherlands are two of the biggest winners. Germany has $ 1,1 Trillion exports with 80 million people. Netherlands has $ 500 Billion exports with 16 million people (50-60 billion coming from Agriculture alone).
In Latvia it is extremely bad. That is our biggest problem, not debt. |

If we had just a little more of the industry, we could gain a great place among the world leaders per capita due to the quantity of the population!

Yes it would. One BMW factory that manufactures 300,000 cars a year and employes 8,000 people would do wonders for Latvia.

But meanwhile some people don't wait for wonders and do the things...
Company "KMM Metals" (http://www.kmmmetals.com/ , located in Riga) invests 12.3 mio EUR to double its output. They will purchase two ovens for bronze casting and increase the quality of their production. Currently they export 99.5%, employ 70 people, additionally will employ 25 - 30 people. - - - - "Cemex" has invested circa 300 mio EUR in the new cement factory in Broceni, near Saldus. Factory is completed and starts operations. They plan further investments - 10 - 20 mio EUR in infrastructure around the new factory.

^ Sounds just great. Such companies as "Cemex" usually indeed improve the surrounding areas. I hope they would make a neat town out of Brocēni!

The brand new factory of stainless steel tubes "Rigamet" (located in Rezekne) has started production. They are monopolists for this kind of production in this region.

Latvia makes powertools?
http://www.rebir.lv/Text_page.aspx?qid=m3495 Is that a Latvian company? I never new about it. But again, like anything Latvia makes, they are not sold anywhere. Only in two stores in Latvia. Perhaps we would have quite a lot of industry and manufacturing if we simply made our products more widely available? |

REBIR is Soviet time factory, all the time throughout the independence times they try hard to survive. Out of patriotism have purchased three devices - quality is so so - medium Chinese level, but lets hope for the best in future.
