The all-important bottom line.

So far, only one year in Safeco Field have they lost money. Not bad!

Back in the black: M's post $3.18 million profit in '09

After suffering their first financial loss since moving to Safeco Field in 2008, the Seattle Mariners were back in the profit-making mode last season, according to the team's annual report released Monday.

The team reported a $3.18 million profit for 2009 in its required report to the Public Facilities District that oversees Safeco Field.

Thus the team's turnaround took place on more than just the field, as the Mariners recovered from a 101-loss season in 2008 to post an 85-77 record last year.

The franchise reported a $4.53 million deficit in '08, thanks in part to the team's highest player payroll ever of $120 million combined with a significant drop in attendance to 2.32 million fans from the previous year's 2.67 million.

Attendance declined another 6 percent this past season to 2.19 million, but the Mariners lowered their player payroll to about $99 million.

Thus the club essentially made more by spending less, though their payroll was still the 10th highest among the Major League's 30 teams.

The $3.18 million profit was calculated using generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), which the team provides each year to the PFD.

The club also presents a separate accounting calculation for the purpose of determining when the franchise will begin sharing its annual profits with the PFD. The Safeco Field lease agreement calls for the team to share 10 percent of its profits once it recoups the $200 million in operating losses accumulated from 1995-99 while playing at the Kingdome.

Using those special lease calculations, the Mariners reported an $11.15 million profit in 2009, thus reducing its original $200 million figure to $39.9 million. The lease expires in 2018.

For those who want to do their accounting scoring at home, the special calculation is based on the GAAP net income of $3,178,000, plus depreciation/amortization of $23,545,000, then subtracting player signing bonuses ($12,351,000), non-ballpark capital expenditures ($525,000) and ballpark capital expenditures ($2,698,000).

Until last season, the Mariners had always recorded a profit since Safeco Field opened in mid-1999. The club turned a franchise-record $23.3 million profit in 2006

Wow - and in 2006 they only finished 78-84. Maybe the secret to having a financially successful season is to have a mediocre W-L record.

I really hope our relief pitching can be consistent this year though, Felix had last night's game in the bag.

God this is awful. How are we gonna get out of this? We have all these people who supposedly have great offensive potential but they aren't doing jack... even Ichiro is batting .250...

It's eight games... All the hitters are underperforming other than Guti. They will improve soon. If they hit a 2-6 stretch in August, it would hardly register - it just looks bad since it is the start of the season. Now, do I expect them to make the playoffs - no. But they should be around a .500 team, perhaps better if a people actually overperform.

So I'm watching the M's because they are on the Fox network today. (The cable system where I live carries the Rockies on their FSN). I don't get to see 'em that often but they sure look lackluster today against the Rangers. No offense hardly at all, something like just 9 HR's all season so far? They should be more productive with the line-up they have.

Wow this team sucks right now. Cliff Lee gives them what we wanted but we can't score a run in 12 innings and now we lose after putting 2 on with no out in the ninth. sigh. Here's hoping the bats heat up when the weather does.

The offense is so bad, we need to get drastic and shake up the lineup or something.

Cut Sweeney, Griffey to bench, Bradley to DH, call up Langerhans would be a good start. The longer they wait, the worse this will get. Sweeney has no place on a MLB team. Griffey should be reserved for pinch hitting on those super rare occasions where the M's are already up by 6 (once so far this season?).

And are we the only team where our rookie 'hot prospects' are unable to hit even .200? Moore, Tui, Clement, Wlad, Adam Jones (as a Mariner) - all fail.
