The British, like the Venetians and the French before them ruled the Ionian group of Greek islands. They were never under Ottoman Turkish rule as can be seen by the more western-style architecture.

Palace of St Michael and St George in Corfu, with the statue of Sir Frederick Adam, a Battle of Waterloo hero, depicted in Grecian toga. Between 1824 and 1832 he was the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. Today it is the lovely Museum of Asiatic Art.

Room of the palace

Cricket ground in front of palace, still a popular sport on the island

Threads like this really put into perspective Britain's cultural influence across the world. Its colonial architecture is breathtaking. Wow.

Great thread, I had no idea about the British colonial heritage in Indonesia. I look forward to seeing more great pics, particularly of the forgotten places.

Wow the British did leave some beautiful buildings in their colonies. In case of India it seems there was some fusion with medieval Indian and Mughal architecture. This is pretty evident from the President's residential house. Rashtrapati Bhavan is what they call it.

The British was in Sumatra, they wanted to compete with the Dutch monopoly of spices. Bencoolen is a rich source of pepper, however the colony are proven to be expensive to maintain due to its location and proximity from Calcutta.

It was later on exchanged for Dutch Malacca not long after the British occupation of Java. Partially due to Raffles' establishment of Singapore which doesn't make the Dutch very happy.

Nice! There are parts of New York (and Boston) that remind me of London. Some of the oldest churches in New York (like St Paul's Chapel of 1766) were modelled after then-contemporary churches in London such as St Martins in the Fields. There are quite a few Georgian buildings in New York City, as well. We think of New York City as being a "new" city, but remember there are 9 buildings in New York that pre-date the Great Fire of London in 1666 (after which most of London's present architecture was built):

The Fraunces Tavern (1719) was built well before the American Revolution:
