Here’s the scenario: you’ve just arrived after a long flight, sandwiched in the middle seat between two people you’ve never met. One of them snores. The other has an MP3 player with ear buds that bleed their favorite music into your space.

It’s been that kind of a flight. All you want to do is get off the plane, get you your hotel and get a good night’s sleep before beginning vacation. But first you’ve got to navigate the arrivals gauntlet. It’s easier to do just that at Los Angeles International now that the airport has re-opened the pedestrian tunnel in Terminal 6.

LAX has spent more than $500 million on security since 9/11

Since 9/11, more than $500 million has been spent to bolster security at Los Angeles International Airport, which has been identified as one of the top potential targets in the state for terrorists.

With the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon approaching, authorities announced at a news conference Wednesday that during the last decade Los Angeles World Airports -- the city agency that operates LAX and as well as airports in Ontario and Van Nuys -- has increased the number of law enforcement officers at LAX from 517 to 811. The ranks include the largest team of bomb-sniffing dogs of any airport in the United States.

“We must never forget 9/11,” said Randy Parsons, the TSA’s security director at LAX. “We are safer than in 2001, but there is no end to securing our transportation system.”

Major improvements include fencing around the airport perimeter, an automated baggage screening system, security cameras, barriers, an emergency response center and a new fire station, increasing the number to three.

Today, LAX spends about $127 million a year on safety and security compared with $48.1 million in 2001.

REPORT: 146 million to crowd SoCal airports by 2035

There may be 130 million to 146 million people a year looking for a flight into or out of Southern California by 2035, but that's still at least 20 million fewer passengers than what the Southern California Association of Governments had expected when the agency crafted its last forecast for air travel in the area.

Every four years, the group made up of local leaders in Southern California, except for San Diego, updates its predictions for what the future holds for the region's transportation landscape taking a long-term view in order to assist in regional planning.

AIRPORT FORECAST

SCAG's forecast for the number of annual passengers in 2035:

Los Angeles: 78.9 million

Ontario: 30.7 million

Orange County (John Wayne): 10.8 million

Burbank (Bob Hope): 9.4 million

Long Beach: 4.2 million

Palm Springs: 4.1 million

San Bernardino: 2.8 million

Palmdale: 2.6 million

Victorville (Southern California Logistics): 700,000

March Inland Port (March Joint Powers Authority): 600,000

Metro is actually building a new rail line, called the Crenshaw line, that connects from the Expo Line to the Green Line at the aviation station, and the green line will be extended north past LAX. There are currently two options to get to the airport. 1) Extend the green line into LAX, 2) Build a people mover from the aviation station to access all the terminals. Its more likely that the people mover will be built. it will leave aviation, access the hotels on Century blvd, then head over to the terminals at LAX.

It's a Thursday evening, and the landing lights of incoming LAX flights glow like torches from Westchester to the San Gabriels. Torch one, 200 lives suspended in air. Torch two, 500. Torch three, 350 awaiting their return to loved ones, bosses, business meetings, auditions and, for many, the soul-saving comfort of their own pillows.

This high-wire act is more than just symbolic of the seventh-busiest airport in the world. It speaks to the risks involved, the importance of procedure, the crushing, timed-to-the-minute routine.

Perhaps no entity in the world juggles as many disciplines as a major airport: security, meteorology, technology, mixology, pipe-fitting, sharpshooting, sushi making and more.

But who runs LAX? Bill, the fire captain. Gary, the luggage supervisor. Max, a Belgian Malinois with a nose for bombs — imperfect strangers you hope know what they're doing, got enough sleep and can put your worries ahead of theirs.

On average, LAX handles almost 1,700 takeoffs and landings a day (even more during holidays), and firefighters will respond to at least one of them at full throttle — they make one to two emergency calls a day here — part of the largely invisible world of numbing protocol and screaming scramble that keeps an airport humming.

What did $543 million buy John Wayne Airport?

John Wayne Airport is wrapping up a major expansion without huge delays, without cost overruns, without becoming embroiled in lawsuits and without firing its lead contractor. That might seem like a low bar to clear, but it's a big deal when viewed against the problems of the last major expansion, which finished in 1990.

The airport's project opens in two weeks, and while it hasn't been without hiccups, it is arriving on-time and within budget, a significant accomplishment given the vast scope and $543 million price tag. "We're very pleased with how the project's gone," said Alan Murphy, airport director. "There are a lot of moving pieces ... and that always opens up the potential for problems."

The airport is a largely self-sustaining operation that, while publicly run, doesn't rely on Orange County taxpayers to pay its bills. Instead, the nine-figure tab was mostly covered by bonds, revenue from airlines and concessions, a $4.50 fee levied on departing travelers and federal grants.
