Very bad, way worse than the last one - the local tv network is broadcasting live scenes - it is terrible, I won't be surprised if there are any fatalities this time

Parts of the cathedral have collapsed (the bell tower is down and we climbed this a few weeks ago) ....

News coming from Twitter are not good...Fire Service confirmed deaths already

Saw a video too and wow...impressive. A huge rock just partially crushed a house!

Many people in Auckland feeling the loss, my neighbours crying their eyes out. If you have been to CHC then it will touch you deeply, it is a gorgeous city with lots of heritage. I myself feel very, very sad ... apparently lots of fatalities

This building has apparently collapsed ...

I love Christchurch as i visited back in 97 and this is absolutely heartbreaking!!! Its tragic to hear of fatalities and both cathedrals are down. The very shallow depth of the quake and the time of day has made this one much worse than the september quake.

it's really saddening to hear this tragic event that happened in this beautiful city.
I myself experienced a 6.3 magnitude and it was really very scary like the roof was noisy I thought the house is gonna collapse
and I stood up to get out but I can hardly balance myself due to too much shaking and it lasted like almost a minute which
I thought was like forever.
I read that there are some people trapped in some collapsed buildings.
I hope that they may be saved/retrieved alive.

Too often at the moment. Since the last major earthquake of 7.1 (which was further away and deeper than this last one) last September they have experienced 4400 aftershocks. This earthquake today was from a DIFFERENT fault line from the other meaning that ChCh will still experience aftershocks from the 7.1 earthquake as well as more from the earthquake today...

Very sad indeed.

Horrible news to hear about the earthquake, so soon after the last one and a lot worse too! My thoughts are with the people of New Zealand at the moment and I just hope that destruction is to a minimum still, sadly I fear not.

Great pictures of Christchurch though SYDNEY!

Thanks for all the well wishes, it is much appreciated. The earthquake has touched all of us and I am afraid to say that Christchurch will never be the same again, so much life lost and so much heritage lying in tatters

This thread has now become a time capsule of sorts - hard to imagine that the streets that I was roaming through exactly one month ago will not look the same again My condolences to all of those who are deeply affected by this tragedy.
