One of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand suffered a devastating earthquake on the 4th of September 2010. The city is famous for it's heritage buildings - some of the best examples of Victorian and Neo-Gothic architecture in the Pacific Region - it has been reported that 90 buildings are badly damaged in the CBD, mostly heritage buildings - let's hope that most of them can be restored to their former glory The earthquake that hit the city is apparently at the same strength as the Haiti quake - thankfully there were only 2 serious injuries. Our thoughts are with our fellow Cantabrians.

Hi Sidney,

Thanks for sparing a thought for us. The city seems to have gotten over the disbelief and shock now.

Looking back on the last few pages I see a few buildings in your photos which are no longer with us.

Christchurch has dusted itself off and now wondering what our next move will be. Thankfully there are many suburbs which were unscathed, for many people life can go on as normal.

Still a little on edge, thankfully our last big aftershock was 4 hours ago.

We all need a good nights sleep- maybe tonight. Here in the cbd, getting sick of hearing sirens!

Thanks again mate.

No worries Luka, the quake has affected all of us up here in Auckland - the mood is also very sombre here (thankfully NZ doesn't have hardcore inter-city rivalry - we are proud of all our cities in NZ - what happens to one city happens to us all) ....

I hope that you get a good night's rest and keep us up to date ... when you have the time, drag some of the pics out and show us what we have lost .... I recognised one of the buildings on the news .... it is grey with big M's in the windows ... it was one of my favourite buildings in CHC and now it is badly damaged .... oh the humanity !!!

Stay strong and we might see you in CHC next month ..... big hugs mate

P.S. How did this one do ?

I walked past the art gallery half an hour after the earthquake. I saw a couple of things hanging from the ceiling and some smashed glass on the floor, (fallen lighting). Other than that its all good.

I spoke to an elderly lady in her nightgown who lives across the street from the gallery. She had her torch on and asked me what Id seen on my walk. Her chimney and fallen down and she, like me, had to climb over furniture and broken glass to get out of her home. She was waiting for her son to drive in and check on her.

As for the Victoria Clock Tower I do not know. Cant get near there, still cordoned off. I do know that the Asko Design store across the street has been destroyed. No idea about my beautiful old home the Victoria Apartments.

The buildings will be restored again in time...

The good news is that no one died in that earthquake

Oh shame man, I cried with the old ladies that were interviewed on the news, they were so scared and some have lost their homes .... thank God for our strict building codes - a shame that there hasn't been time to bring all the heritage buildings up to speed but thankfully the cathedral was retrofitted a year ago - is that correct ? Let's pray Luka that all our favourites are still standing ..... there are so many that I can't list them all .... good memories and warmth in the pics posted above ... let's stay positive
