Haha, how my tank has changed since those images. I won't show what it is like at the moment mind, as I've a remodel in the works for next weekend.

Hmmm here I am 4 months later and I still haven't got around to getting the aquarium... I guess the main thing is going on holiday... are there any automated fish feeders that are any good?

I'm also unsure where my nearest decent stockist is, bearing in mind my fish will be coming back to their new home by bus

yes, there are. they don't cost much, you can get fish food that gradually dissolves for them to eat or an automated feeder. fish can also go days without being fed, in the wild they experience feast or famine so going four days without food is OK for them, just feed them well before you go away.

Love the tank, Gothic. Its incredible how stylish and modern some of these new tanks are..I'd be tempted to get one of those but I think 2 tanks is more than enough work to be dealing with!

SO143, It worries me when I see Arowanas sold in some aquatic shops, as they're barely a few inches in size and little information available should someone by one without knowing how big they get, and also that they are predatory fish that I'd imagine like tucking into a chunky goldfish I haven't the heart to keep any animal that requires live food, I know some people enjoy watching that kind of stuff but it isn't for me.

ferge. i wouldn't get one of those, the 19 litre tank is too small. the fluval chi 25l seems better. incidentally i've had that tank four months now, you're looking at it without ANY maintenance at all apart from topping up the water. never even cleaned it. i think we can say it's in balance

I said I'd wait til I had redone the tank, but it may be a couple of weeks off yet whilst waiting for orders to be delivered.

A notable addition is Bruce, the Pleco (about 9inches in size ).

But I've never been happy with how it looks, mainly because on one side it has real wood with live plants, and the other side is plastic 'root' ornaments with plastic plants. So I've just ordered some more live plants, and today I received two new pieces of wood (and they're some size!)

So be quite a task getting it re-scaped, but hopefully it'll look as I'd always visioned within the next few weeks.

I shop around, usually it is either from www.aquaessentials.co.uk or www.plantedtanks.co.uk, although the former have little in stock at present. The only issue I have with them is it is fine when you're selecting plants and you have all the information at hand, but as they arrive they are all in separate little bags that are unlabelled, so it is then a guessing game trying to identify which are to be the background plants and which are the foreground (suppose it'd help if I was more plant-savvy).

The tank is 150x45x60cm (roughly around 420litres, I think). As for Bruce, he belonged to a former colleague who wanted to get rid of their tank. My neice ended up having the tank, it is barely 30 litres if that and they'd apparently had it (and Bruce) for around 16 years! I felt so sorry for the fella when they said that, I bet it could barely turn around in there and dread to think what the water quality was like - must have been a fairly shit life (as fishy lives go). I feel like playing 'Born Free' when he is out and about, he certainly makes up for the lack of space these days, I've had Plecos in the past but they were always very sedate and stayed in hiding, but he spends a good portion of the day swimming around.

www.seapets.co.uk

get the plants from here. they are supplied by tropica, and tropica are brilliant. they aren't cheap but you won't regret it.

nice to see bruce is so happy. makes me sad when people have huge fish in tiny tanks. i feel guilty ive got three platy's in a 19 litre (the tank is large enough in terms of water size but they don't really have enough space to swim properly due to the dimensions).

420 litres, i am deeply jealous.

There's a Pets at Home in Deptford on Blackheath Road - I'm sure they sell tropical fish. The number 53 runs straight past it if that's any good for you.

I have a feeling I'm going to make my aquarium purchase this weekend... Just got my book advance so fuck it, why not?

Looking at this one (its the right dimensions for the space)

Nothing too fancy, just a variety of common freshwater tropicals

A few tetras, danios, couple of angelfish... I used to have some Silver Dollars when I kept fish before which I really liked
