Upgraded electric traction system in Rijeka basin presented

As of next year, when another upgrade will be made, the railroad will no longer be an obstacle to the transport of cargo from the Rijeka basin, Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Zdenko Antesic said in Rijeka on Thursday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of an upgraded electric traction system on sections of the Moravice-Rijeka-Sapjane, Skrljevo-Bakar and Susak Pecine-Rijeka Brajdica railroad in which HRK 637 million was invested. As a result of the upgrade, Croatian Railways' (HZ) Infrastructure division now has a single electric traction system, which will facilitate transport, reduce energy costs and help in retaining jobs.

Antesic said this was one of the most valuable investments in Croatia and that further investments would be made to upgrade existing railways and to build new tracks, notably on the Rijeka-Zagreb-Botovo corridor, through European Union funds.

The government's priority is to strengthen the financing of HZ Infrastructure through loans and, in the future, other sources, in order to upgrade the tracks which would become part of the EU grid and be connected to the Baltic-Adriatic corridor as of July 1, 2013.

The 5b corridor from Rijeka to Zagreb and the Hungarian border as well as from Rijeka to Zagreb, Maribor and Graz, and corridor 10 from Bregana to Tovarnik will be part of the European grid, Antesic said, adding that Croatia did not have enough money in the budget to build the transport infrastructure.

HZ Infrastructure Board chairman Darko Pericic said EUR 550 million would be invested in upgrading the rail infrastructure in the next three years.

RAILWAYS TRANSPORT MODE

From all modes of transport, railways are ecologically the most acceptable and sustainable in the long run.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore the focus of Croatian Railways’ development politics is achieving high business and social goals, which rest primarily on the principles of sustainable growth and environment protection.

Croatian Railways' environment protection comprises the following activities:

drawing up normative acts in the field of environment protection and their harmonization with the law
tracking railway regulations implementation
technical and technological projects for the reconstruction of the existing and the building of new HŽ facilities within which environment protection level will increase
improvement of conditions for management of waste obtained through technological processes
the making of studies connected with environment protection
the introduction of a quality system for the field of HŽ environment protection (ISO norms)
The goals of area and environment protection are being evaluated on equal footing with other development goals, and the contribution to environment protection is a key feature of the comparative advantages of Croatian Railways. Croatian Railways’ environment protection goals are:

improvement of transport quality in order to completely minimize the existing or potential harmful influences on the environment (waste water purification, safe disposal of dangerous and damaging goods and materials and noise protection)
prevention (ecological analysis for every new project)
reduction of drinking water consumption, achieved through more rational use of water resources and repairs and rehabilitation of the water supply network
reduction of energy consumption in any form, especially energy fuelling the locomotives as well as fossil fuel consumption through rail electrification
promotion of railway transport use in order to increase passenger and cargo transport (by stressing its comparative advantages and sustainable transport principles)
employee education, encouraging responsibility for the environment and regular business control

RAILWAY AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION

In the context of energy, railways are much more effective in passenger and cargo transport than road transport is.

The consumption of propulsion energy per work unit in railway passenger transport is 3.5 times less, and in railway cargo transport 8.7 less than for the same activities within road transport (according to J. Golubić: Transport and Environment, Zagreb 1999).

RAILWAYS AND NOISE

The International Union of Railways (UIC) has determined that means of transport make the noise of the following average magnitude:

Average noise magnitude made by means of transport

Unlike the noise in road transport, appearing without any regularity, the noise in railway transport is always of approximately the same loudness and character.

RAILWAYS AND SPACE

The need for surface area per transported person is in railway transport 9.5 times less than in road transport. The same number of people and cargo can be transported via a double track railway line in an hour as via a 122 meters wide highway with 16 lanes.

Railways are the safest carrier and more passenger and goods should be directed there. They help relieve the road network, conserve nature and non-renewable natural resources from devastation, decrease the number of road accidents and ecological catastrophes-respecting people and nature. Railways are an ecologically sustainable mode of transport because they are people and nature-friendly. Railway transport is environment-friendly. Comparative ecological advantages of the railways become at the same time market advantages.

Modernization of the railway transport route - Challenges and Opportunities

On Wednesday, was held in Rijeka panel discussion where representatives of local and regional government, the academic community, the Croatian Railways, Rijeka Port Authority and the Port of Rijeka discuss the challenges and opportunities of modernization of the railway line.

Panel organized by the Croatian Society of Railway Engineers (HDŽI) in collaboration with the Railways infrastructure with the aim of explaining the benefits to operators and the local community, bringing projects to be working on Rijeka traffic route. Since the junction of Rijeka is extremely important in the said direction, and the value of the project to be built by 2020. amounts to about 550 million euros would be given priority among the projects.

Specifically, the position of the port and its attachment to the Corridor Vb suggests a natural way of goods coming from the Mediterranean, and are transported to Central Europe or the Danube region. CBP Croatia - the new gateway to Europe emphasizes the development of the port of Rijeka and the railway line and Vb corridor that stretches all the way to the Hungarian border at Botovo and ends in Budapest as a regional transportation center.

However, to the port of Rijeka positioned among the major Mediterranean port development should be coordinated action of all stakeholders.

In discussing the development plans were presented by Acting Prefect Kvarner County, Vidoje Vujic, Mayor of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel CEO HŽ Peričić Darko, director of the Port of Rijeka, Vlado Mezak, CEO Luka Rijeka dd, Vedran Devcic, a member of the HZ Cargo Ltd., Vlado Hanžek and Anita Špigelski of Railways Passenger Transportation.

It concluded the modernization of port and rail capacity, except that it creates the preconditions for Croatia to become competitive traffic, it can imply a number of other advantages, which can be expressed primarily through raising the quality of life of citizens of Rijeka and its surroundings, the development of the economy and boost the economy through corridor along the Rijeka Gateway from the River to the Hungarian border, officials from the Railways Infrastructure.

HeyHo,

a few years ago the Croatia railway got 8 ICN trains (class 7123) looking like this:

Does anybody know how many trains are still in service? I heard rumours that there is currently NO operating ICN train in Croatia...

Can anybody confirm this information? Will the trains be coming back to the Croatia Railway?

Thank you very much!
