Gredelj rolling stock factory optimistic about its future

The Croatian rolling stock factory TZV Gredelj, which is in the process of bankruptcy, held a press conference on Monday to present the delivery of four diesel locomotives commissioned by the Moroccan national railway operator.

The first four locomotives were delivered in February, another 20 are to be delivered by mid-July and a further ten by the end of October. Gredelj restored the locomotives in collaboration
with the US National Railway Equipment Company (NREC), earning 400,000 euros per locomotive.

The presentation was attended by the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, Sinisa Hajdas Doncic, and the official receiver, Petar Hrkac, who both expressed their optimism about the company's future.

Gredelj once had 1,600 workers and now employs slightly over 1,000. It generates most of its income from exports and cooperates with NREC, which is negotiating with creditors about its possible acquisition of Gredelj, whereby the Croatian company would become a global player, the minister said.

The Croatian rail operator HZ has completed an initial assessment of bids for the construction of 32 trains and the most likely candidates for the job are Koncar and Gredelj, he added.

Hajdas Doncic said he was pleased that, in addition to repairing old locomotives, Gredelj also worked on modernising locomotives that could be competitive not just in Croatia and the region, but also outside Europe.

Hrkac said that he was happy that Gredelj had over 1,000 workers and that there was a positive spirit of optimism in the company. He expressed his confidence that the present workers would continue working and producing.

When asked if it was true that Chinese and US partners were interested in taking over Gredelj, Hrkac said that the Chinese had visited the company a few days ago, but had not yet made a concrete offer, while the Americans visited Gredelj about a week ago and were also still thinking about that option.

Hrkac said that Gredelj expected contracts worth about 200 million kuna by the end of the year, noting that its locomotives plant was operating full time and was working for all countries in the region and Morocco.

There was talk of Corridor X, in which Croatia wants to join the highway and railway, from the border with Slovenia, from the direction of Ljubljana - Zagreb - state border with the Republic of Serbia in the direction of Belgrade, and the railroad corridor in the X direction Zagreb - Graz (Austria) via Krapina and Maribor in Slovenia. Minister Hajdaš Dončić stressed that Croatia is in talks with Slovenia on Corridor X, to the direction of Krapina to Maribor included in the core network.

The meeting also discussed the traffic development strategies RH where it is said that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Strategy, which will cover the period from 2015th - 2015th year, completed by the end of this year and that would comprise six key topics: rail, road, sea, river, air and urban-suburban, public and integrated transport.

Commissioner Kallas agreed that it is too early to talk about the best solution for connecting the Croatian south, adding that it's not just the traffic issue, and is not closely related to the OP, since traffic is not on these corridors. Nagalsio is how it relates to the question of regional development.

"The advice of the European Commission is that when it comes time to decide on the best solution, it may be possible to apply a combination of Croatian PPP (Private Public Partnership) and the Regional Development Fund." - Said the minister Hajdaš Dončić, and said that had not been discussed percentage of co-financing.

During his two-day visit to Croatia, Siim Kallas will on Friday, 3 May, accompanied by a host Minister Hajdaš Dončić travel to Rijeka, where he will meet with Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and visit the Port of Rijeka, VtMIS and the National Centre for Coordinating Search and Rescue (MRCC).

Seaport in Ploce is primarily based on freight traffic from its hinterland and from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Seaport is primarily based on the handling, storage and other ancillary services performed at terminals: general cargo, bulk cargo, liquid cargo, bulk cargo, timber, containers, and alumina and petroleum coke.An integral part of the Port of Ploce and port Metković which is located 20 km upstream on the river Neretva. Specialized for handling cement, slag and granulated stone.
And as for the transport of people, as you said Verso, currently there is not enough traffic, and I think that there is no interest by the state for such a project.

Minister: Railway projects opening new investment cycle

In the period up to 2020 we expect large investments into the railway sector which will be a driver of a new investment cycle that will bring a lot of benefit to Croatia's economy, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and European Union Funds Branko Grcic said presenting investment projects for Croatia's HZ rail operator.

Railways are one of the government's key strategic interests which can be seen in the fact that these projects which are currently being prepared are valued at EUR 2.5 billion, Grcic said.

According to Grcic, these projects are the basis for a new development cycle in addition to projects valued at EUR 400 million which have been completed, are under way or are being negotiated.

He added that investments into railways are completely different than investing in roads where the state had to borrow money and now is not in a position to repay these loans. "That is why we are offering them for concession to salvage public finances", he pointed out and urged the opposition who, as he said, had taken part in creating a dispute over this matter, to take part in solving the problems.

Railway projects, Grcic noted, will mostly be financed from European Union funds and the state may borrow a smaller amount to cover its own share.

Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transportation and Infrastructure Sinisa Hajdas Doncic said that the aim of the railway investments which by 2020 should amount to around HRK 40 billion, was to raise the quality of railway tracks so that freight transport can achieve speeds of up to 120 kmph and passenger travel up to 160 kmph.

The priority of these investments, Hajdas Doncic said, was to secure railway routes along the 5b and 10 pan-European corridors which means the Rijeka transport route as that is the message we are being sent from the international business community which has focussed its interest in the Rijeka Port to transport goods to Europe.
