Let's collect information and photos of German castles (Burgen), palaces/stately homes (Schlösser) and fortresses (Festungen) here! Foreigners are invited to participate of course.

Check this comprehensive Wiki list for some inspiration: List of castles in Germany

Rules:
- Credit the sources of the images you post! Give a link, where you got the photo from underneath any photo.

- Give information about the buildings or at least a link providing such.

- Pay attention to the amount of pictures per page. Don't post too many photos in a row, like a max. of 10 should be sufficient.

Cordial thanks. Let's roll!

erbse,
I have seen many photos of this castle/palace but none of them compare to these. Stunning.

What qualifies a royal residence as a palace? In England there is one called Kew, but looking at it I am reminded more of a modest dutch-style country mansion. Do they have to be grandiose to count, or do all royal residences become palaces by association?
Is Hohenzollern a palace?

Yes indeed. It was mainly built in the 16th century, but heavily modified until 1884.

I have no clue how it looked before then, maybe someone can offer historical images/plans or smth.

I always felt the Victorians made such clumsy attempts to re-create the past, in spite of how fun the results could be. Neuschwanstein and the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina are my favorite examples. One is hopelessly absurd(perhaps on purpose) and the latter is an earnest attempt by the architect to simulate the old masters. But both really seem to fall short of the refinement one sees in the real thing.

Time for switching back to the West, North-Rhine-Westphalia

Altena Castle (Sauerland) - the first youth hostel of the world was established here in 1913!

And there's also some annual rock festival called Burgrock.

With Altena town in front of it:
