Ecuador will have one of the best airport infrastructure in latinamerica, GYE is gorgeous, modern and cozy. . . I can't wait for the new airport in Quito to be ready.

Wow, amazing airports! GYE is really big and modern! Why new Quito terminal is not so big, looks like regional? Old airport is in the city, i am glad for ecuadorian infrastructure is renewing. Anyway good for Ecuador! Viva Ecuador!

BTW, what is the annual amount of passengers using UIO and GYE?

the new airport looks rather small because it is being build in several phases (the entire things is new from scratch... runway, terminal, access freeway, etc.). what u see on the pics is just phase 1.

here is a few statistics on the movement of the current UIO (located in the heart of the city )

Number of Passengers in Thousands

Number of Flight Operations in thousands of flights

Cargo Operations in thousands of tons

QUITO-LIMA FLIGHTS SUSPENDED FOR VOLCANO ERUPTION IN ECUADOR
Quote:
LIMA, May 30 (NNN-ANDINA): The Tungurahua volcano in central Ecuador Saturday experienced one of its major eruptions, forcing evacuations and shutting down four airports, including that of Guayaquil. Local and some international flights were suspended in Quito, including the route to and from Lima.
The National Civil Aviation Department (DAC) decided to redirect local and international flights to the Ecuadorian capital and Manta, Peru21 daily reported.

As time went by, Ecuador's Geophysical Institute reported that the volcanic activity was decreasing, although the process of internal vibrations or seismic tremor continues.”

Tungurahua, or "Throat of Fire" in the Quechua indigenous language, has been active since 1999 and last erupted in August 2006.

As was explained by the Security Minister Miguel Carvajal “The Tungurahua volcano, located in central Ecuador, saw an increase of its volcanic activity on Friday causing an ash cloud that forced the evacuation to shelters of about 2,500 people from the surrounding towns and also have to close some airports”.

The local and international media reported that “due to the effect of the wind, the cloud of ashes headed south and southwest of the volcano, located about 130 miles southeast of Quito, which forced authorities to evacuate five communities near the volcano”.

The eruption caused the fall of ashes in several cities in the Andean highlands and the coast, which reached Guayaquil on the Pacific Ocean.

There were also suspended flights between Quito and Andean cities of Cuenca and Loja in the south of the country.

This is what the New Quito Airport will look like if it were built out. By the looks of this, the original passenger terminal gets extended and another passenger terminal and second shorter runway is added. This is probably from 2005, so have the buildout plans changed since then?
