Thumbs up

Finally some renderings of the renovated Connaught Place are out. These may not be the official renderings as they were designed by an HT graphics guy but it gives an idea of what is expected.

Life blood for capital's heart

It will cost Rs 700 crore to give Connaught Place a spanking new face, while maintaining the original look

Infact last year I took a picture of the exact same block in the inner circle. Note the difference in the facade towards the left of the Park Avenue board:

Quote:
It is the biggest restoration and revitalization project of its kind ever to be undertaken in Delhi. The New Delhi Municipal Council last week approved Rs 700 crores for the Connaught Place rejuvenation project.

A senior NDMC official said that the project is an urban regeneration project in the true sense and that a detailed report is being worked out to get funds for it under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The Connaught Place redevelopment includes façade restoration of all the blocks and unhampered pedestrian access from the outer circle to the Central Park that is fast turning out to be a cultural hub with live concerts and performances. The Engineers India Limited is the lead consultant for the project and with design and landscaping inputs being provided by Design Action Group.

FAÇADE RESTORATION: The conservation plan that involves façade restoration includes complete re-plastering work, a sample of which can be seen at Block C of Connaught Place where burma teak windows and ‘jaali work' has been redone in consonance with the original design. The verandahs will get deep red granite floors with Kashmir white granite stone borders.

The brick ceilings are also being strengthened with cement. An iron railing designed as per the original plan is being installed on the terrace parapet. All the shops and offices on the upper and lower floors will have uniform signages. Façade lighting is also part of the plan.

LANDSCAPING AND PEDESTRIAN CORRIDORS: All open spaces will be landscaped with pedestrians getting priority over vehicular traffic. Eight new subways have been planned on Panchkuian Road, near Kake Da Hotel and other outer extensions. The existing five subways on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath etc too will be upgraded and all subways will have escalators like the ones in the metro stations. It will be possible for pedestrians to move unhampered from Outer Circle to Central Park and back without being impeded by traffic except at the middle circle. Apart from plants and shrubs, special paving stones will be used. Vehicles will be parked in underground parking lots in the inner circle and surface parking will be at a premium.

REFURBISHED INFRASTRUCTURE: A seven metre high and equally wide service tunnel will run through the middle circle and will accommodate all engineering services like water pipelines, electrical cables, wires and so on. This would rule out any digging in Connaught Place in future. New transformers will be put in place and power capacity will be taken up from existing 25 MW to 40 MW for future needs.

A central chilling plant near Minto Bridge will meet the air conditioning needs of the entire business district. Water supply lines, drainage and sewerage will be new. There will be no DG sets, generators and AC units in the area which would mean that visitors too will not be exposed to hot air emissions and pollution.

CCTVS will also be installed in the entire business district. NDMC officials said that the Regal cinema area which has large number of pedestrians milling around will also be included in the renewal plan as that too is an integral part of Connaught Place.

hopefully once they are done, they will find a better way of putting up the store billboard than just throwing it over the beautiful column and moulding design.

Jan 22: Starwood opens first Westin in India
Quote:
Starwood has just launched the Westin Sohna Resort near Delhi, and with it saw the opening of its first Westin in India.

Roughly 90-minutes away from the Delhi International Airport, the property separates itself from the hustle and bustle of modern Delhi city, and puts the new resort closer to the satellite city of Gurgaon.

“As the first of several Westin hotels to open in India, The Westin Sohna Resort will introduce our renowned brand to this exciting, fast-growing market,” said Stephen Ford, Starwood VP India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

“We are confident that the luxurious accommodations and instinctive services provided by this new Westin resort will enable tourists and business travellers to enrich their mind, body and spirit.”

The 97-room Westin Sohna not only represents the Starwood’s first Westin in India, but is also the Group’s 20th property in the country, including those still under development.

alright children, gather around.

I was in CP yesterday for a very short period, but had enough time to click some pictures of the CP upgrade on my cellphone. Its still a very small part of the entire area that is currently being upgraded, so I don't know how long they will take to get the entire thing done.

Good job being done at CP buildings.

Those Nike & Park Avenue on the columns shouldnt be there according to the original designs as that should be placed on top of the roof where space has been allocated.
