Zaandam (The Netherlands) city renewal. Some unusual projects

New pics scroll down

My city (Zaandam, 10 miles from Amsterdam) is going through some city renewal projects wich are quit special. I like to share them with you and find out your view to it.

Here comes the pictures;

The new Town Hall, with bus station underneath

Golden Tulip Hotel Zaandam/Amsterdam

Cinema with at the background residental tower De Tsaar

Residental tower De Tsaar

Residental warehouses

And here are some pics of how it's turning out in the real world...

Overview:

Disneyesque architecture, but somehow likeble I guess...

And Zaandam is not 10 miles from Amsterdam, it's in Amsterdam's urban area, not even 10 km from central Amsterdam.

I'm still not sure if I like it. It is a nice fresh addition to otherwise hideously ugly Zaandam though.

It's certainly different from anything I've seen before.

hahaha, I knew the project, I knew the dinky sketchup-renders, but to see the photo's of the hotel actually being built makes my day. Incredible, and it's so absurd it somehow gets away with it.

The rest of the complex however is REALLY badly done. Not even because of it being incredibly kitch - which it is of course - and defenitely NOT getting away with it, but just for being really badly done. It's so insenstive, it's incredible. Hahaha.

The green hotel works well because it is so obviously toy town, it's not trying to hide it. Whereas in Britain they would build some pastiche classical building that is meant to be taken seriously, but can't hide the crap modern detailing that makes it terrible compared to the vintage architecture it's meant to be copying.

When I saw the render image of the hotel, I thought someone just made it up for fun.

Then the real photo. OMG!

The hotel building remembers me of the Holland America Line building in Rotterdam.

I hope the locals like it. I like it because it's so over the top, but they have to live with it.

Most of the locals like it. Offcourse it's imnpossible to build something everyone likes.

It's not only goog for tourists but also for the residents. The city center will be much more easily to visit by car with the parking lot for 1000 cars. A new cinema for 1200 people, over 18.000 m2 of new shops, terraces at the water, canels in existing streets, a big square with catering facilities, a modern bus station, and much more. In short, a pleasant city center.

Here's some impression video, this gives you a goog view at the area: http://www.multi.eu/index.php?option...&project_id=95

Their also building a lifted street over the road, wicht connects the city centre to the bus/train station, and a residental area. This is also where the water will start it's way and fall down in the canel with a waterfall.

Woah...looks the Dutch have been smoking some really powerful weed lately. Since when were buildings in Holland painted kelly green?

The urban planning of it is fascinating though. Since it's a sort of shopping/hotel center, I'd say it reminds me of Atlantic Station in Atlanta, GA. It has the same sub-level streets and parking as well. Also both seem to be integrated into an already urban environment.

Very interesting work in a difficult situation. The Dutch style is so strongly associated with the Netherlands that it has been used in tourist attractions and in children's books to evoke either a realistic or romanticized Dutch locale. When you attempt to modernize the style you have to avoid duplicating design directions that have already been exploited.

This is generally very good. Going multi-story and pastiche works, but adding (or exaggerating) geometrics is too close to Legoland style for my taste. Bold colors work well for a few buildings but not for a neighborhood. McDonalds (and others) have known for years that bright colors attract, but they also get you to leave after about 20 minutes.

Now something really bold would be some deco or US ranch style. (Just kidding.)
