Swissotel eyes strong foothold in India

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Quote:
Kolkata: Swissotel Hotels & Resorts, a subsidiary of Zurich-based Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, is eyeing opportunities in India and hopes to establish its presence across all major metros within five years. “We are in talks with several developers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. I am confident that there will be at least five hotels under the Swissotel brand by 2015,” Swissotel president Meinhard Huck said at the preview and curtain-raiser of Swissotel Kolkata Neotia Vista, a 147-room deluxe five-star property alongside City Centre II at Rajarhat. A soft opening is planned in mid-May with the hotel going fully operational in June.
This is Huck’s 10th visit to India in the past couple of years; an indication of how keen the Swiss group is in establishing a presence in India that it views as critical to maintain growth. On Wednesday, the Swissotel president was in Mumbai to attend a seminar and used the opportunity to network with several real estate biggies in the western metropolis for managing 200-300 room properties.
“Once we make the hotel in Kolkata a success, offers will come to the table. This year, there are many more players keen on partnering with us than there was a year ago,” Huck said, expressing confidence in outperforming the market in two years.
While Swissotel manages 30 hotels in 19 countries, including four company-owned properties, it is looking at only management contracts in Asia and East Europe. “We are bullish on Asia with strong focus on India and the Gulf as growth opportunities are maximum in these markets. As the second-most populous nation and with an economic growth that will make it the world’s third-largest economy soon, India is a key growth market for Swissotel and a vital link for us between Europe and Asia-Pacific,” Huck said. The company saw turnover dip by 16% last year when meltdown affected European markets.
Swissotel is the first European brand in the city. Hyatt Regency, that was set up eight years ago, is an American brand. Swissotel is also the first hotel to get off the block in New Town with the other projects, including that of Shristi Infrastructure, plagued with delays. The other hotels lined up in Kolkata, including Taj Gateway and ITC Fortune, are still under construction.
At Swissotel Kolkata Neotia Vista, there will be eight categories of rooms with tariff ranging from Rs 9,000 for the classic rooms to Rs 27,000 for the executive suite with terrace jaccusi. The hotel will also sport a 24-hour coffeeshop Cafe Swiss, Indian speciality restaurant Durbari, lounge-cum-bar Maaya, rooftop lounge-cum-bar Splash and rooftop swimming pool with 360° view. The hotel also boasts a huge banqueting area of 9,000 sq ft with a 7,000 sq ft ballroom and 2,000 sq ft pre-function area.

BTW am very skeptical about the viability of the Swissotel considering the sorry state of infrastructure in that area..

Actually, this part of newtown is not that bad. And it is just 1 mile or two away from airport..

I am guessing this will end up being the hotel of choice for those who can afford it simply because of its nearness to the airport.

This is the one of the kind 5 star accomodation in Kolkata this close to the airport. Additionally you have City Center two right at your doorstep for all your shopping and entertainment. I am guessing business at ITC Sonar or Hyatt may be slightly impacted.
