“Convivio” a journey among “The Words of Taste”

From Proust’s literary lunches to the strange dishes’ names in New York’s Italian restaurants. The tears of Rossini for the loss of a goose with truffles and the soup with nettles which was especially fond of Vittorio Alfieri. After the success of the two appointments of November, on February, 11th “Convivio. A Tavola tra cibo e sapere” (Convivio. Food and culture on table) came back to the Piccolo Teatro Grassi in Milan with a journey among "The Words of Taste" lead by the linguistic and writer Gian Luigi Beccaria.

The historian of the Italian language has shown how even the most abiding lexicographer was not able to resist the temptation, writing a dictionary, of giving the recipe of the “Agnoli”, “for whose navel shape it is said the goddess Venus has posed”, or how, writing his Lombard-Italian Dictionary, Vincenzo Martinelli listed all the ice cream you could enjoy in Milan in the first half of the nineteenth century. Between the tale of a cherry-without-cherry sorbet and a video about the culinary indulgences of Andrea Camilleri’s Police Commissioner Montalbano, the readings by Leonardo de Colle revealed how food has been transferred from the plates to the paper, sometimes creating literary stiles. Some passages by Mario Soldati presented the linguistic richness with which the journalist told the wines of the Langhe and Monferrato with their bouquet made from musk and earth, and Beccaria led the public to explore the relationship between the rich Italian culinary tradition and the collective imaginary, unveiling how it is possible to recreate, through words, the unique taste of food.

The series of lectures, organized by Corriere della Sera Foundation in partnership with Expo 2015 to explore the close connection that links food and culture, will continue on Monday, March 11th. The historian of religions Giovanni Filoramo will talk about Nutrition and religious traditions.

BIT, Minister Gnudi: “Expo 2015, an extraordinary opportunity”

“Expo 2015 is tomorrow, and will be an excellent opportunity to promote Italian tourism through the world, but we have to think about it starting from now”. The words used by the Minister for Regional Affairs, Tourism and Sport Piero Gnudi, speaking on February 14th at the inauguration of the International Tourism Exchange (BIT) in Rho-Fiera Milan, are confident and practical.

“We must – said the Minister – create an offer able to attract visitors throughout the whole country. For example, keeping open our most prestigious theaters, such as La Scala, even in summer. But these things need to be done now, we must not lose an event we do not have opportunities to have once again in the foreseeable future”.

This is also why Expo Milano 2015 this year doubles its presence at the BIT. Until February 17th it will be featured in two corners, one on the stand of the Municipality of Milan and the other in the area dedicated to the Lombardy Region.

Traditional travelers, tourists interested in the challenges of nutrition, and lovers of art and good food: from May 1st to October 31st 2015, more than 20 million visitors, inspired by the most diverse interests, will be heading to Milan to discover opportunities and innovations offered by theme “Feeding the planet. Energy for Life”.

And Italy, known worldwide as the "Land of well-being", will become a must-see destination in itineraries and specific routes to discover the beauties of our country, and the visit of Expo Milano 2015 will be one of the more fascinating highlights. The 2013 BIT represents an important occasion of meeting and exchange between Expo 2015 and the tourism industry. To structure an offer capable of meeting the expectations of a heterogeneous audience of visitors like the one that will walk along the Cardo and Decumanus of the World Expo site, on February 14th Giovanni Sacripante, Sales & Marketing General Manager of the Expo 2015 Company, will meet Italian and foreign tour operators.

For the travel agencies interested in becoming Expo 2015 authorized retailers, interesting perspectives arise: for example, they may include the visit to the exhibition site in thematic packages such as food and wine tours, cultural routes, welfare or sustainable tourism throughout all Italy, thus meeting the requests of the largest number of tourists.

Thanks to the extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage and the ability to entertain and welcome that characterizing our country, Expo Milano 2015 will make a significant contribution to increase Italy's image abroad.

At the center of an important network of connections, the World Expo will offer a unique experience, to live in first person, choosing the type of ticket that best suits your needs: one day, seasonal, family tickets or evening admittance.

Expo 2015, a 25 billion impact in production and 200,000 work units

The impact, from 2012 to 2020, of the World Expo on the Milan and Italian economy in to a study commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce and Expo 2015 to a team of economic analysts

24.7 billions of additional production with an increase in value added estimated in € 10.5 billion and 199,000 people employed directly or indirectly (additional annual work units). This is the induced economic Expo 2015 will produce in Milan and in Italy, from 2012 to 2020, between investment of the management company and the participating countries (excluding infrastructure projects), increased sales, incoming tourism and economic legacy that the event will leave in terms of new jobs created, developing property assets and a growing touristic appeal of the area.

The tourist flows will receive the biggest impact from Expo (additional production of 9.4 billion, 4 billion in added value and about 80,000 jobs, plus 10,000 units of work as a long-term effect for the tourism sector), but the effects on the business system will be seen also in the start-ups (1.7 billion of additional production and 12,400 employees) and the increase of foreign direct investment (16,500 employees, € 1 billion of value added). There will be benefits for the real estate assets (Additional production of 1.1 billion Euros and more than 8,000 jobs) between investments linked to the Expo site and the revaluation of value of properties in the Milan area.

These are the most relevant results emerged from a study on the direct economic impact and the legacy of the Expo Milano 2015event, commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce and the Expo 2015 Company and lead by a team of economic analysts coordinated by Alberto Dell'Acqua, professor at the SDA Bocconi School of Management.

The project led to the creation of a model for estimating the economic impact of Expo Milano 2015, starting in 2012 and projected up to the year 2020, which will be made available to the BIE for the economic evaluation of the impact of the World Expositions.

“The data show – said Carlo Sangalli, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan - that Expo will be a driving force for growth able to give an important turning point for our economy. This is the reason why we must believe in this project in spite of this great crisis. As the Chamber of Commerce we are actively involving the business community to show a new interest in the appointment closer with the World Expo. Enterprises will be the engine for the event, but we need to make it work well, starting now, with a constructive effort and team spirit by all the parts involved and among the institutions”.

“The numbers of this research – explained Giuseppe Sala, CEO of the Expo 2015 Company – represent an injection of enthusiasm and optimism for the entire Italian system. In a difficult period of global economic crisis, is acknowledged that Expo Milano 2015 could have the decisive task to give life to the Italian Enterprises sector. The study deals with 25 billion Euros of additional production, in relation to which will be employed 200,000 people. This is the possible economic impact created by the World Expo in all Italy, until 2020. The event we are organizing will not end with the closing of the gates on October 31st, 2015. The positive impact will last in all sectors of production for years to come. It is crucial that local and national institutions invest resources, energy and ideas in this project. There is a lot at stake: the image of our country in the world, an incentive to get out of the stalemate we are living now, and the opportunity to move our economy towards a new step”.

“I am sure that the Expo will be the first major event after the crisis – stated Diana Bracco, President of the Expo 2015 Company and General Commissioner for Padiglione Italia (the Italian Pavilion) – a key factor in the revival of Italy’s image in the world and an important opportunity to support tourism and the growth of Italian manufactures in markets are set to become the drivers of development. The Expo, and the Italian Pavilion in particular, the implementation of which is my responsibility since a few months ago, will be an extraordinary showcase for the many small and medium enterprises which will benefit from the international stage to promote their excellence. During the six-month of the World Expo we expect more than 100 Heads of State, official delegations, trade missions and B2B meetings. The Italian Pavilion will be an outstanding platform for international relations and a powerful communication tool to promote our Made in Italy, our culinary tradition and the Italian unique cultural heritage and landscapes”.

Fifteen participation contracts signed in 3 days. The interest of Countries towards the Cluster keeps growing, and Expo Milano 2015 gets more and more approval around the world. The number of countries which have signed the participation contract thus rise to 34, at two years from the event.

Delegations coming from all over the world, on February 19th, 20th and 21st, with this signing have formalized their participation in the World Expo and in particular in one of Cluster.

Tanzania, Vanuatu and Afghanistan will tell us the World of Spices; Cameroon and Ghana will enrich the Cocoa one; Sierra Leone will be in the Rice Cluster, Mozambique and Haiti in the Cereals and Tubers; Mauritania, Eritrea and Palestine will be together in Arid Zones Cluster, while the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea will show the wealth of their lands in the Fruits and Legumes Cluster and Yemen and Kenya will enhance the fragrance of the Cluster of Coffee.

All countries that signed expressed their excitement on the possibilities the Cluster offer them, overcoming the old divisions of geography pavilions to allow each participant to share ideas, experiences and traditions. This new approach, they stressed, gives them new opportunities for cooperation on the common issues on food and food security, for the development of new technologies, and allows them to broaden their perspectives in the trade of products which are often their country’s first visiting card in front of the rest of the world.

“These fifteen signatures – said General Commissioner of Expo 2015 Roberto Formigoni - are fifteen messages of satisfaction for the Cluster project, we made with our best efforts to be extremely attractive for all Countries.”

The legacy of Expo: a research center

The commitment of Expo Milano 2015 on behalf of sustainable development of the planet is getting more and more concrete. Thanks to the protocol signed with the Italian Ministry of Environment, the World Expo will bequeath as legacy an international research center on nutrition and sustainable development. “This organization will remain for the international community after the Expo”, said the Minister of Environment Corrado Clini, speaking this afternoon at the press conference to show the agreement. The press conference was also attended by the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with responsibility for Expo 2015, Paolo Peluffo, and by the CEO of the Expo 2015 Company Giuseppe Sala.

The International Center Food and Environment Security (CF&E) will be a permanent institution of research on nutrition and sustainable development, a point of reference for experts from around the world, where to study how to resolve issues related to the environment and food security and reduce the imbalance of energy and food resources between North and South.

“We had set ourselves the goal of creating something that will not end with the Expo -explained Expo CEO Giuseppe Sala -. This Center will be open to all local authorities, universities and institutions that wish to participate”.

The CF&E will promote several international cooperation programs Expo 2015 will support in the coming years. Among the main tasks, the Centre will also enhance sustainable development programs at the international level and spread knowledge and information. It will be the promoter of major training projects on food and environmental security for the developing countries realized by the Ministry of the Environment, with the collaboration of agencies and international organizations such as FAO and UNESCO, of foundations and enterprises.

Submitted 65 projects to the International Competition to design Padiglione Italia at Expo Milano 2015

Great success of the International design competition for “Casa Italia” (“Home Italy”) at the World Expo held in Milano in 2015. “Such a wide participation – commented with satisfaction Diana Bracco, Commissioner general of Section for Italy- guarantees the high quality of the final result and demonstrates we were right to engage in an open and transparent way the best creative talent around the world”.

The submission phase for the project participating at the International competition to design Padiglione Italia (the Italian Pavilion) at Expo Milano 2015 launched on November 30th, 2012, is closed. 65 the projects submitted: the number is particularly significant given the complexity and economic importance of this kind of competitions.

The participation in the competition has been run through an online procedure for all phases of bureaucratic competition until the delivery of the documents by the designers. The final design and execution activities will be entrusted by negotiated procedure without prior publication of a contract to the winner of the competition. The interest of the world of architects and engineers has been demonstrated by the data access to the website of the competition (www.concorsopadiglioneitaliaexpo2015.com). In fact, there were more than 4,000 unique visitors for a total of about 10,000 accesses and 21,000 page views. The contacts are from all over Italy (2,612 from Milan, 1,300 from Rome, 460 from Naples, 273 from Florence, 257 from Bologna, 220 from Turin, and so on) and from abroad (247 from Spain, 176 from Portugal, 131 from France, 110 from Russia e dozens of other hits from Germany, USA, Brazil and UK).

The contestants in the competition for the construction of the Italian Pavilion and especially Palazzo Italia (Italy Palace), which will be one of the permanent legacies of Expo 2015, based their projects on the concept “Nursery Italy”, elaborated by the creative Marco Balich for the Expo 2015 Company. The goal of the competition is to find an expression of art and architecture able to fully convey and combine history, tradition, renewal and focus on the future.

“We are very happy with the response to the call to Draw Italy we launched at the Triennale - said Diana Bracco, Commissioner general of Section for the Italian Pavillion - the participation has exceeded our expectations, and the great work done by the Company led by Giuseppe Sala, the contracting company, has been repaid. An encouraging sign that shows how Italy has all the features to achieve a successful World Expo able to be an exciting experience that no visitor should miss”.

Telecom Italia and Expo 2015: prototype “Smart City App” presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

Application offers a unique, groundbreaking, immersive and involving digital visitor experience of Expo 2015 and the city of Milan, leveraging advanced technologies such as Augmented Reality and Visual Search

The Smart City App for Expo 2015 was previewed today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Attended by Telecom Italia COO Marco Patuano and Expo 2015 CEO Giuseppe Sala, the event showed the latest advances in the partnership between the two companies as they pursue the objective of realizing the Digital Smart City Expo 2015: a new model for the city of the future combining groundbreaking technological services with environmental sustainability.

The Smart City App has been designed as a reference tool to provide information, services and entertainment on Expo 2015, on participating nations, on the city and nation, on partners and all of the players involved. The purpose of the App is to ensure an ongoing relationship with visitors, including via next-generation LTE mobile connectivity networks and the most advanced devices that offer increasingly involving and complete experiences.

The initial prototype of the Smart City App has been built in partnership with specialist companies Telecom Design and Click’n’Tap. It already incorporates a number of groundbreaking technologies such as Augmented Reality and Visual Search to offer a surprising experience of Milan today and, in the future, Expo 2015, combining real views with animation and multimedia content to enhance citizens’ and tourists’ experience. The application makes it possible to experience greater social interactivity using a visual communications approach (urban painting) and create shared paths with friends and with people who have shared the same experience or intend to do so (personal assistant).

Marco Patuano, COO of Telecom Italia, says: “We are particularly proud to be previewing the prototype of the Smart City App at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. This groundbreaking solution is enhancing the wide range of services we are developing for Expo 2015. Mobile access to technologically advanced content associated with the event and the city of Milan is one of the special features of the forthcoming universal exposition, a new way of accessing content within the urban and exposition space as part of an articulated and intelligent system of digital services that is revolutionizing and enhancing the way citizens and visitors relate to the surrounding environment.”

Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 S.p.A., says: “We are very pleased to have built the application with Telecom Italia that we are presenting here today. The Smart City App demonstrates the highly technological approach to the Universal Exposition we are organizing. But that’s just part of the story: it provides a voice, a way of thinking and getting in touch with different cultures and experiences, which we will be conveying to the 20 million expected visitors. This technology will not condition visitors’ lives; it will be at their service. This is why I believe that this product is a tangible example of the benefits Expo 2015 will produce and indeed is already producing for the people of Milan, leaving a major legacy for the city’s future.”

The leading-edge solutions that are undergoing testing during this initial phase will help in the development of a rich set of high technological value services and content for mobile access, supporting the various cultural, commercial and tourism-related end purposes, and capable of offering an experience under the banner of digitalization while transforming Expo 2015 into a smart city.
