With Ireland, Expo Milano 2015 reaches a total of 142 participants

The number of Official Participants in Expo Milano 2015 has reached 142 with the recent acceptance by Ireland. The news was given in a note verbale from the Irish Embassy to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The intention to take part in Expo Milano 2015 had already been expressed last November by Enda Kenny, Taoiseach of Ireland, during a meeting with the Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta. “The participation of Ireland in Expo 2015,” stated Letta, “is the latest boost to ensure that Expo will be the great success for which we are all working so hard.”

The yes from Dublin confirms the positive international response to the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” and to the entire Expo project.

I don't much care for the Italian pavilion -- it just looks like Beijing's Birdnest redone as a square. But the U.A.E. one shows some good imagination.

Martini in a terrace on Italy Pavilion, will show to tourists from every corner of world, the art of Italian-style aperitivo and drinks.
Not only "legendary" aperitivo, but also new special drinks, created with products of 20 Italian regions.

"Grown in Britain, shared globally": UK signs the contract to take part in Expo Milano 2015

The UK officially booked its place at the Milan Expo 2015 Universal Exposition today, signing a participation agreement and committing to build a Pavilion which will showcase the best of UK research, innovation and entrepreneurship. It plans to deliver a high-impact participation in Milan under the theme: Grown in Britain: Shared Globally.

Feeding the planet is a global challenge. The UK comes to Milan with a powerful story to tell about how it is innovating in science and technologies needed to address that challenge. The UK will demonstrate two things. That modern Britain is uniquely open, creative, diverse and collaborative. And that this unique outlook is generating world-leading breakthroughs in agri-tech, plant science, animal health, food safety, and the food and drink sectors.

UK representation will transcend bricks and mortar, and deliver a truly novel experience, whether to visitors coming to Milan next year, or to virtual visitors from around the globe. We look forward to forging long-lasting partnerships as a legacy of this global event.

UK Trade Minister Lord Livingston said: "Through the UK Pavilion we will reach millions of people around the globe and build on the positive perception established by the UK Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 and the London 2012 Olympic Games."

UK Commissioner General Hannah Corbett, speaking at the signing ceremony for UK participation in the Milan Expo said:

The success of Expo 2015 matters for Italy and for all those investing in this universal event. We are confident that Italy will deliver an exceptional Universal Expo and want to make a full contribution to its success. This is a fantastic opportunity for Italy and also for Britain and the British creative, business, research and development communities to show to the world everything that we are doing to rise to the challenge of feeding the planet."

"We are very pleased with the quality of the United Kingdom participation in the Universal Exposition - said Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner of the Italian Government for Expo Milano 2015 -. UK has interpreted the Theme in a way perfectly mirrors the history of the Country that in 1851 hosted in London the first edition of this extraordinary event. Innovation, research and technology to improve the world and the quality of people's life are the key words of this event, the real baton that countries that have had the honor of hosting it have then passed. A mission that Expo Milano 2015 wants to respect and value, inviting all participant countries to share experiences and knowledge in order to ensure a better future for all".

Future Food District

Placed at the heart of the site, near the crossing of the Cardo and Decumano streets, The FFD is one of the key thematic areas of EXPO 2015 “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. Two 2500 m2 pavilions – a real supermarket and a functional kitchen – surround a 4500 m2 public piazza. Moving through them, visitors have the opportunity to explore how production, distribution, preparation and consumption of food is evolving. The FFD Supermarket is split over two levels, both conceptually and architecturally. On the ground floor, new technologies are showcased in a large, fully-automated warehouse, where products are collected and sorted, constantly supplying the upper floor. It is here that you will find the Supermarket itself, a space capable of generating new interactions between consumers, products and manufacturers.

In the Supermarket, products are displayed on interactive stalls. This layout, made possible by a new automated reshelving system, avoids the visual barriers of classic shelving units, creating a horizontal landscape where it is easier to interact with others ‘around the table’. Suspended above the stalls, large screens reflect the products on display, making it easy to find what you’re looking for, even from a distance. At each stall, motion sensors detect the gestures of shoppers, augmenting products with digitally customized information, not present on the customary labels, and creating a personalized shopping experience. As in the traditional market, the FFD Supermarket returns to being a place of exchange, where the focus is on the relationship between consumers, products and producers. New technologies, and product services, facilitate this transformation, re-connecting individuals with the food network and creating a more informed and social consumption.

Plans have been unveiled for the China Pavilion at the 2015 World Expo in Milan. This is the first time China has opened a pavilion overseas. Han Peng takes a look at what visitors can expect. The shape of China’s Pavilion resembles billowing wheat fields. With the key words "land for hope, food for life", the general theme is food safety and sustainable agricultural development. Wang Jinzhen, chief gov't representative of China Pavilion, said, "The 2015 Milan World Expo is focused on modern agriculture. China is the world’s most populous country facing huge challenges and also amazing progress in making food available for each person. By opening this pavilion, we hope to demonstrate our concerns and achievements and boost understanding with the world."

In 2010, China successfully held the Shanghai World Expo. But this is the first time China has opened a national pavilion overseas at an expo. One highlight of the design is its pursuit of harmony between modernity and nature. Perfectly calculating Milan’s sunlight, the pavilion uses cutting innovation to maximize sunshine over electric lighting.Covering an area of nearly 5,000 square meters, the pavilion is the expo’s second largest, after Germany’s. And China’s high-profile participation has attracted great interest in Italy. Ding Changfeng, deputy CEO of Wanke Group, said, "We are really excited to have this opportunity to promote our "made in China" brand. As a Chinese company, we are trying to have more of a voice in the international market."

“Landscape on a plate”: the Republic of Estonia signs its participation contract in Expo Milano 2015

A pristine natural environment, organic food, creativity, sustainable energy use and expertise in both traditional and innovative sectors: these are the key points of the project submitted this morning by the Republic of Estonia, one of Northern Europe most dynamic countries, with the signing of the contract for participation in Expo Milano 2015. The document was signed by the Commissioner of the Government for Expo Milano 2015, Giuseppe Sala, and the Commissioner General for Estonia, Ahti Kuningas, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, and responsible for the project of the Estonia Pavilion.*

Today signature marks the 95th participation contract that Expo 2015 S.p.A. signs with Official Participants. There are now over 140 countries and international organizations that have confirmed their presence in the event.

The Estonia Pavilion will cover an area of approximately 1,000 square metres and provide its visitors with an experience strongly oriented to sustainability and appropriate use of technology. At least 50% of the materials used to build the pavilion will be recyclable. Visitors can taste good quality of Estonian organic food, representing the traditional and Nordic fusion alike, and at the same time watch live pictures of animals roaming freely in the Estonian nature, streamed via webcams. They have a chance to share their impressions and emotions on Skype or social media via facilities in the pavilion, therefore achieving a more personal feeling of Estonia. Swings will be provided for children and also for adults, making Estonian space family-friendly and doubling it as a space to relax. The pavilion will also host concerts, fashion and cultural events.

The Republic of Estonia has chosen the concept “Landscape on a Plate” to interpret the theme of the Universal Exposition, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. The project develops along three main lines: the diversity and uniqueness of the natural Estonian landscape and its culinary culture based on fresh, organic products; the cutting edge of new technologies and energy use; and the manifold characteristics of the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

The visit to the pavilion will be enriched by art exhibitions, such as the exposition of the young artist Triin Veersalu, and by an intense events agenda, including culinary experiences proposed by the finest Estonian chefs in the two restaurants located in the exhibition area, that are going to attract many visitors.

A youthful, dynamic country with a strong sense of citizenship and community, Estonia will inspire visitors with the scents, tastes and sounds of a country that combines the values of Northern-European culture with an exceptional dynamism and vitality, featuring sustainability, respect for the unspoiled nature of its landscapes and technological innovation.

“The Estonian exhibition at Expo Milano 2015 will present Estonia as a young, rapidly developing country in Northern Europe in which you find pristine nature, organic food and people who boast skills in both traditional and innovative areas of life, including IT development”, commented the Estonian General Commissioner Mr Ahti Kuningas. “These will be the three ‘pillars’ on which Estonia’s exhibition in Milan in 2015 will be based. Estonian pavilion named “The “Gallery of ” will represent Estonia as a Northern, yet a warm country – a democratic and open place. Made of timber, so abundant in Estonia, the “Gallery’s” space is used invitingly and there’s no single point of entrance where people have to stand in line to get in – rather, it’s open from three sides where visitors can follow their own path of exploring the exhibition. What is great is that it’s also a green solution, since the wooden pixels according to the concept can later be individually or in cluster brought back to Estonia and used at children’s playgrounds for building swings, for example.”

“The Universal Exposition grows richer every day with every new, stimulating and fascinating addition”, commented Commissioner of the Government for Expo Milano 2015 Giuseppe Sala. “The Estonia project is another example. Through their propensity for technological innovation and sustainable development, this country will serve its visitors, as we read in the theme statement, a ‘landscape on a plate’. Estonian know-how in nutrition and energy, developed through years of study and research, offers food for thought and models for development of great value for other Participants.”

Kuwait unveils plans for Milan Expo, mascot named 'Foody'

Sudan this week confirmed its presence at Milan Expo 2015, becoming the 143rd official participant in the food-themed world fair next year.

While Sudan will be exhibiting food practices with other countries in an arid-zone themed cluster, another desert country, oil-rich Kuwait, on Thursday unveiled in Milan plans for its own pavilion.

The Kuwaiti pavilion will immerse visitors in a drama of harsh nature and human advances to make life bloom in a desert with some of the highest recorded temperatures in the Middle East.

The Kuwait pavilion will take visitors through the great transitions, from parched earth to budding greenery, from day to night and through the changing seasons along an exhibit that is nearly 1.5 km long. Enormous sails, shaped like those of a traditional Kuwaiti sailing vessel will frame the entrance - homage to Kuwait's rich maritime history and seafood-based cuisine - launching visitors first on a path through the desert to understand the climatic challenges of the land. Then research and technological solutions will show visitors how the terrain is being reshaped through water desalination and reuse, and renewable energy to cultivate the land and fishing resources. The path finishes in a slice of Kuwaiti society and culture, with a restaurant and a souk - or open market - where visitors can buy regional Kuwaiti cuisine.

There will be two versions of the path - one for adults and one for children. Special guides will be provided for kids, who will encounter a live rainstorm and an aquarium, among other attractions.

The building will be able to host 11,000 visitors per day and will be located between the German and US pavilions. One side will be entirely covered in hydroponic plants.

Emanuale Rossetti, the director of the general contractor Nussli Italia, which is in charge of the pavilion, promised "a fascinating experience". "The theme proposed by Expo (Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life) is perfectly suited to our country which has been involved for some time in the development of best practices in the energy field to apply unconventional solutions in food production and bequeath to future generations a more fertile land," said Salah Mansour Al-Mubaraki, Kuwait's Expo 2015 Commissioner General. The pavilion itself also will be highly environmentally sustainable, with rain water collection and reuse, and a film treatment on glass windows to filter sunlight. After the Expo, the Kuwaiti pavilion will be dismantled and 80-90% of the materials recycled, said Rossetti.

Also unveiled this week, the name of Expo's Arcimboldo-like cartoon mascot, with its banana lips, garlic nose, figgy beard and pineapple topnot was announced - "Foody".

The Milan Expo 2015 jury chose the name among 8000 entries submitted by children around Italy who participated in a contest launched in December to give appellations to the mascot and its 11 single-food friends. A tropical lady banana has been dubbed Josephine, the fig is now Rodolfo, a pomegranate has been named Chicca and the orange, Arabella. The watermelon is Gury, the mango Manghy, the apple Pomina, the pear Piera, the radishes are the Rap Brothers, while the blue corn is Max Mais. Expo Milano 2015 Commissioner Giuseppe Sala admitted that the garlic, named "Guaglio" - which means "guy" in a southern Italian dialect - was controversial within the northern Italian jury.

The main mascot Foody will appear on the Expo entrance gates, on trams around the city, on merchandise - like t-shirts and stuffed critters - on 20 million children's textbook covers and on television and electronic screens.

"''From January, we'll be ready to start with the Disney cartoon TV series and the series on the web," said Sala.
