Why is it that only the Muslim countries have interesting-looking pavilions? The rest are pretty boxy looking.

The works for the Arid Zones Cluster are proceeding. In numbers: 1/5 of world population.
Once the structure is finished, the Pavilion will be entirely covered with 24 thousand barrels of satinized PVC that recall desert dunes.
The site is shaping up.

Expo2015 Milano - a massive tourism opportunity for Italy

This year BIT - the International Tourism Exchange in Milan was partnered by what may prove to be a tangible sign of Italy's resurgence. The World Expo, in this case Expo2015 is to be held in Milan, and just by the BIT site. And the organizers say that sustainability is key "Sustainability is a central pillar of this commitment, an overarching, universal value that permeates all aspects of the Expo starting with the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", projected into a sustainable future for the planet and all of society." Speaking at the opening of the three-day International Tourism Exchange, the General Manager of Expo Milan Event Management Division Piero Galli said 20 million visitors were expected, with 6-8 million people coming from abroad - with at least a million from China! The tourism sector was estimated to benefit from approximately 5 billion euros (6.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the six-month event.

Over 500 buyers at the Bit have already declared they would like to schedule special "experience packages" for Expo 2015.. The Expo aims to generate over 20 million visitors - so clearly it is a force to be reckoned with. But more important is the exhibition's title: "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" basically focusing on one of Italy's great strengths - food! As the organizers say, Expo2015 aims to be a journey rather than an event - a learning journey through the 142 (so far - and rising) country and other participants. One particular innovation that may make the journey from country to country more interesting is the fact that countries will no longer be grouped geographically, but by thematic clusters which exploit similarities to make the visitor experience more interesting. Tour operators around the world can benefit from the event by creating packages and reselling entry tickets.

China Pavilion

Expanding on the Expo’s overarching theme, “Feeding the Planet – Energy for Life,” the pavilion’s “Land of Hope” is centered on the idea that “hope can be realized when nature and the city exist in harmony.”

From the Winning Design Team: Rejecting the typical notion of a pavilion as an object in a plaza, the China Pavilion for the 2015 Milan Expo is instead conceived as a field of spaces. Designed as a cloud hovering over a “field of hope”, the pavilion is experienced as a sheltered public plaza beneath a floating roof that incorporates the building’s cultural and exhibition programs. The roof’s distinctive profile creates an iconic image for the project and will foster a unique presence within the Expo grounds.

The China Pavilion is themed “The Land of Hope”. The project embodies this theme through an undulating roof form, which is derived by merging the profile of a city skyline on the building’s north side with the profile of a landscape on the southern side, expressing the idea that “hope” can be realized when nature and the city exist in harmony. The Pavilion’s floating roof is designed as a timber structure that references the “raised-beam” system found in traditional Chinese architecture, but is adapted to accommodate modern construction technology. The roof is clad in shingled panels that reference traditional Chinese terra-cotta roof construction, but are reinterpreted as large bamboo panels that reduce structural weight, create a shaded public space below, and further enhance the Pavilion’s unique silhouette.

Beneath this roof, the building’s ground plane is defined by a landscape of wheat (the “field of hope”) that references China’s agrarian past and transitions seamlessly into a multimedia installation in the center. This installation, formed from a matrix of LED “stalks” that mimic the form of the wheat, forms the centerpiece of the building’s exhibition program.

The Pavilion’s full exhibition and cultural offerings are experienced as a sequence of spaces, beginning with an exterior waiting area in the landscape, leading to a themed exhibition space with interactive installations and cultural offerings from forty Chinese provinces. After this, visitors are guided up a gently sloped public stair to a panoramic viewing platform above the LED matrix installation, after which they are guided into a multimedia space, which will feature a short film focused on returning home for the Spring Festival. This sequence concludes with visitors stepping outside onto a platform above the bamboo roof that enjoys expansive views of the Expo grounds.

- We've already 'beat' Shanghai edition, for number of participants and national pavilions.
- We've created the clusters: thematic pavilions (never seen before).
- For six months from May to October, there will be over 4,000 events in the expo site, if we not count events that there are every month in the city center and not only.

Go here mate!

Vanke to attend Expo Milano

Vanke will attend Expo Milano once again after successfully participating in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and will become the first Chinese company to join the Expo in overseas pavilion-building during the 163 years of Expo history. On March 4, Vanke Pavilion press conference was held at Expo Milano 2015. Yu Liang, President of Vanke Group; Alberto Bradanini, Italian Ambassador; Yao Rui, Associate Director of Exhibition Department of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade; Zhou Yijia, Expo Milano organization committee's China representative; Ding Changfeng, Executive Vice President of Vanke Group; and others attended the event.

At the news conference, Vanke Pavilion building, exhibition, graphic design plan and Vanke Expo Team were presented. Theme of this year's Expo Milano is "Nourishing the earth, energy of life". Vanke Pavilion, which focuses on new styles, has "dining hall" as the exhibition theme, which happens to coincide with the big theme of the Expo this time. It will tell a Chinese story to the world in the form of "Media Forest". "Media Forest" is composed of 300 screens placed irregularly and they will play a film lasting 8-10 minutes. The film captures the slice of real life of ordinary residents from nearly 60 Chinese cities in community Shitangs, and vividly interprets the concept of "Building community through food" of Vanke Pavilion.

In the eyes of Vanke, what the dining hall represents is not only a place to have food. Vanke Pavilion attempts to take the Shitang as a point of reference to show the real situation of empty-nest elderly and left-behind children as well as the social issues triggered by increasing alienation and loneliness in the age of high-speed urbanization. Yao Rui, Associate Director of Exhibition Department of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, said Expo Milano reveals the modern enterprising image of China and shows the soft power of China to the world. China Council for the Promotion of International Trade is the force behind China's participation in Expo, and Vanke's successful participation in this year's Expo has its strong backing.

Alberto Bradanini, Italian Ambassador to China, says the embassy not only seeks better Sino-Italian ties but also strongly backs the participation of Vanke at Expo Milano 2015. Yu Liang, the President of Vanke Group, said in his speech that the "dining hall" theme was chosen by Vanke to present a real and whole picture of city life of China from the perspective of ordinary community residents. As the urban supporting service provider, Vanke is always promoting harmonious relationship between community and nature. He said people want a feeling of belonging, harmony and community atmosphere in harmonious neighborhood relationship and not just good houses and services.

Since 2010, the fifth Shitang created by Vanke has been promoted in all Vanke communities nationwide. The Shitang not only brings convenience to daily life but also becomes an important public space for residents to connect and communicate. "Shitang" theme of Vanke Pavilion is an extension of Vanke's practice in community Shitang. Yu Liang said that participation in Expo Milano 2015 is part of Vanke's strategy to go global, and it fits in nicely with promotion of brand value of Chinese enterprises around the world. At present, Vanke has real estate investments in New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong and other cities. As a company that grew up during China's urbanization drive, Vanke plays the role of an industry pioneer. In the Expo Shanghai 2010, Vanke decided on "2049 possibility of respect" as the theme. It used wheat straw as the main building's material and natural material, natural lighting and natural aeration-cooling in the pavilion and showed its respect for nature. As the only real estate company taking part in the Expo, Vanke Pavilion received 1,210,000 domestic and overseas visitors and gained extensive praise.

To create Vanke Pavilion as a world-class pavilion, it had invited international teams to conduct building and exhibition design. Daniel Libeskind, internationally renowned architect and chief planner of the reconstruction of the World Trade Center in New York, was the chief designer of Vanke Pavilion, and internationally renowned exhibition design organization AAA carried out the exhibition plan. With an area of about 1,000 square meters, Vanke Pavilion is located in the north section of north-south principal axis of Milano Expo Park, occupying the best position of all pavilions. While designing the Vanke Pavilion, Liberskind has heavily used curved geometric figures, building a sense of continuous flowing and has created a building space beneficial for thinking.

Vanke has signed partnership deals with 13 enterprises, including China Construction Fourth Engineering Division Corp. Ltd, Hitachi Elevator (China) Co Ltd, and Ningbo FOTILE Kitchen Ware Co Ltd. Yu Liang thinks Vanke Pavilion serves not only as a display platform of Vanke but it also wants to cooperate with all parties to create Vanke Pavilion of Expo Milano 2015 as a common platform that will provide more opportunities to international interaction and brand publicity for Chinese companies.

Barilla foundation joins Renzi in Expo food leadership

A foundation that bears the name of Italy’s biggest pasta dynasty - Barilla - this week jockeyed to launch an ambitious sustainable food initiative into agenda of Italy’s new government in the run up to Milan Expo 2015. The Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN) on Thursday said it had joined the new Italian premier, Matteo Renzi, in calling for Italy to show leadership in agriculture, food and environment. The neo-premier had remarked on the role of the Milan Expo 2015 while addressing the Senate earlier in the week. The BCFN is calling upon national governments and international organizations to sign a Milan Protocol in time for the food-themed Expo to enshrine principles of coordinated action for a sustainable global food system. Following the spirit of the Kyoto Protocol for climate change, the Milan Protocol has three overarching goals: to slash food waste by half - 1.3 billion tons of edibles are tossed or lost around the world each year; to implement agrarian reforms to limit food-based biofuels and speculation; and to tackle obesity, emphasizing food education and healthy lifestyles, as Michelle Obama has in the United States with her Let’s Move! campaign.

The world fair theme is "Feeding the planet - Energy for life," tackling issues such as food security, hunger, and with promoting environmentally, socially, economically sustainable global food production practices. More than 140 countries are participating in the Universal Exposition, which takes place next year from May 31 to October 31 in an area of more than 100 hectares near Milan's massive Rho Pero trade fair exhibition centre.

This week news emerged that China is preparing for a massive presence there. On Thursday, China presented at a press conference in Beijing its plans for its Expo pavillion. Covering 4590 metres, it will be the world fair’s second largest after Italy’s landmark centre-piece for the event. However there will also be two additional pavilions representing the Chinese, announced Wang Jinzhen, who is vice-president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (Ccpit) and head of China’s participation at Expo. One of the two additional pavilions is curated by Vanke, a Chinese real estate giant. The other is under the wing of a consortium of Chinese businesses. Both will be “integral parts” of the main Chinese pavilion, said Wang. The main Chinese pavilion will be divided into four themes and as many exhibitions. In the first, Paradise, the importance of respect for nature will be underlined. The second, Land, covers the physical and geographical structure of China. Humanity is dedicated to the Chinese civilization, whereas Harmony is a reflection on the importance of balance and sustainable development.

New Holland Corporate Pavilion for Expo Milan

The industrial vehicle makers New Holland Agriculture, a leading firm producing tractors, harvesters and utility vehicles for agriculture have released designs for their Corporate Pavilion called ‘Earth Screening’ at Expo Milan. With sustainable agriculture at the base of the design, Turin based firm Carlo Ratti Associati teamed up with Recchi Engineering, for the winning bid. The highlight of the 2015 corporate pavilion will be the two automatized tractors with zero carbon footprint, to run on self produced energy, and incessantly plough away at the field on the sloped roof of the pavilion, like an enormous 3D plotter.

“We are thinking of a future where an agricultural field can become the base for a huge agricultural printing, with major advantages in terms of biodiversity and the preservation of resources’ says Carlo Ratti on the theme ‘Feeding the Planet’. Apart from the robot-tractors on the roof, the inside of the pavilion will host an exhibit on some of the latest and most significant innovations that New Holland has made in the field of automatization and sustainability in agriculture. Colourful visuals and dynamic images of farming from all over the world will be an invitation for visitors to participate in sustainable agriculture from around the globe in all four seasons. After the closing of the Milan Expo grounds on the 31st of ottobre 2015, the 1600 square meter pavilion will be dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere as an innovative children’s teaching program.

Revealed shortlist to design UK pavilion at Milan Expo

The eight teams shortlisted to design a ‘highly distinctive’ pavilion include bids from Amanda Levete’s firm AL_A with engineers AKTII and Grant Associates in collaboration Wilkinson Eyre. The shortlist: AL_A, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Asif Khan, Barber & Osgerby, David Kohn Architects, Grant Associates, Paul Cocksedge Studio, Wolfgang Buttress Studio. Project director Hannah Corbett, said: ‘Feeding the planet is a global challenge for both the developed and emerging world and the UK has a powerful story to tell about how we are generating world-leading breakthroughs in agri-tech, plant science, animal health as well as food and drink.

‘The Milan Expo will be a unique opportunity for the UK to demonstrate our world class innovation and creativity to millions of people around the globe. I have been impressed by the number of companies who applied and am delighted that the final list represents such a diverse cross-section of British talent.’ Competition organiser Malcolm Reading, added: ‘The shortlist represents an inspiring mix of creative skills, combining design, content and interpretation and spanning a number of professional fields from architecture and music to agri-business, via engineering and story-telling. The collaborative approach rises to the challenge of making a memorable pavilion for Milan and our shortlist has great talent and energy.’

The six month-long Expo in Italy is expected to attract more than 20 million visitors. The first Expo was held in London in 1851, and the 1889 event held in Paris resulted in the construction of the Eiffel Tower. The £25 million UK pavilion for the Expo 2010 held in China, was designed by Thomas Heatherwick. Heatherwick beat Avery Associates, Draw Architects, John McAslan and Partners, Marks Barfield, and Zaha Hadid Architects to win the design competition for the structure. The teams now have until mid-April to develop concept designs to present to the competition jury. A winner is expected to be announced in May.

Assigned works for construction of some clusters

Rubner Objektbau one of Italian and European most important companies, for the woodworking and creation of large buildings with this material, won subcontract for the construction of some clusters: Bio-mediterraneum (12 buildings, 4 kiosks, 3 technical buildings, 1 covered square), Islands (2 buildings, 1 technical building, 1 tasting area, 1 covered square), Arid Zones (8 buildings, 1 technical building, 1 covered square), Cereals and Tubers (7 buildings, 1 technical building, 1 covered square). Sustainability and great competence: the projects will be implemented for a total amount about 20.9 million euros.

***

What are clusters?
The participation model “Cluster” is one of the peculiarities of Expo Milano 2015. These innovative exhibition spaces group, within the same architectural project, a number of Countries focused on a prominent, shared and representative theme. The participation model of Cluster is aimed to the collaboration with and among the participating Countries, by encouraging them to make a comparison among different cultures, innovative interpretations of the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” and solutions for common challenges in the fields of the agriculture, nutrition and well-being. This model allows Countries from different Regions and Continents to collaborate by strengthening the universal character of Expo Milano 2015.

Clusters will be organized around specific food chains or specific themes of interests. In this way, we create “villages” with a strong geographical and thematic identity with open spaces that can be used for events, restaurants and shops in order to offer visitors a new and participated experience.

Official clusters:
- Islands, the Sea and the Food
- The Biomediterraneum, Health, Beauty and Harmony
- The challenge of Water scarcity and Climate change
- Rice, abundance and security
- Coffee, the engine of ideas
- Cocoa, the food of Gods
- Old and new crops, Cereals and Tubers
- The world of Spices
- Fruits and Legumes, united support
