Concerts extended. Run-up to food-themed World's Fair saturates Italy.

Music is set to accompany the food-themed fair, as Milan's Orchestra Verdi announced this week it will present an enriched, marathon concert season next year, including performances around the city and flash mobs from September 2015 to January 2016. "It will be an absolutely extraordinary season for the number and quality of concerts," said the orchestra's managing director, Luigi Corbani, explaining one of a host of satellite initiatives set to animate the city of Milan during the Expo.

An online poll revealed this week that Italians, especially Lombardy residents, are gearing up for the event, which takes place next year from May 31 to October 31. Awareness is extremely high according to the study conducted by the Italian Touring Club and the Internet-based social-research outfit Duepuntozero-Doxa. Eighty-two percent of Italians and a whopping 97% of those in Lombardy - the region where Expo will take place next year - "know the city in which Expo will take place". These numbers compare to a little more than 50% in 2011, from a 2012 study conducted by the Italian Touring Club with TurisMonitor. Italians, however, are less aware of the timing of the Universal Exposition. Only 27% of Italians indicated that the fair would last "six months" - a percentage that rose to 42% for Lombard residents - while 35% of Italians had the misperception that it will last all year.

Although 73% of Italians said they would like to see the World's Fair, only 25% confirmed that they would definitely visit the 100-hectare site near Milan's massive Rho Pero trade-fair exhibition centre, where so far 147 countries and other participants are set to put their best on show. The percentages rose substantially for Lombard residents, however, 85% of whom said they would like to visit the fair, and 53% said they were sure to go.

More than half of Lombard residents also said they would be willing to volunteer for reception activities. Eleven percent said they definitely intended to offer themselves to Expo, while 41% said they would think it over. "The research confirms a series of observations that we have seen for a long time in various studies," said Antonio Filoni, head of research for Duepuntozero Doxa. "Italians, citizens and consumers show a clear willingness to cooperate with the institutions and companies, making themselves available to actively create initiatives that involve them".

"The data on the availability of volunteers for Expo are very comforting," said Franco Iseppi, president of the Italian Touring Club. "It attests to a growing sense of belonging demonstrated by this important international event".

Romania Pavilion

Within the exhibition, the Romanian pavilion (550 sqm) has its place close to Piazza Italia – the square that articulates the two main pedestrian arteries: Deccumanus and Cardo – therefore it becomes a strategic exhibit that should take advantage over its position.

The height and a unitary façade were the base aspects considered in order to create a simple but powerful landmark exhibit object that serves as an attractor and orientation mark. The system used for the facades was chosen in order to obtain a powerful visual impact, by recreating a traditional Romanian pattern. The repetition of this pattern on the entire building transforms the pavilion into a sculptural object with a powerful national identity, offering at the same time the same precious detail as an exhibit would in a jewelry museum.

The perception of the pavilion is constantly changing within the mind of the visitor as he gets closer. From further distance the pavilion seems a solid object, introverted and impenetrable, the closer the visitor gets it unveils itself – being able to see through its wooden blades.

Once inside it becomes a warm protective space that tells a Romanian story in a show of lights and shadows created by its façade filter. The exhibition inside the pavilion aims to emphasize Romania’s agriculture that is based on a diverse mixture between traditional and modern systems. Conceived as an initiatory vertical path for the visitors, the exhibition spaces recreate the Romanian cultural heritage. Beginning with an informative overview on the typical crops, continuing with the fertile Romanian soils, the traditional agricultural techniques and with the people that still use these techniques, the path ends on the roof terrace, where the visitor interacts directly with the basic romanian cereal crops.

Milan gears up for 1yr countdown to Expo

Milan geared up Wednesday for the one-year countdown to the start of Milan Expo 2015. The city administration and the Milan Chamber of Commerce presented "Expo in the City", unveiling more than 130 events scheduled to animate city streets, squares and neighborhoods for 30 days of the six-month, food-themed world fair that will run May 1 to October 31, 2015.

Events in the city scheduled throughout the 184 days of the Universal Exposition, are expected to add an estimated two billion euros of business activity and employ roughly 20,000 people, according to a study commissioned by the Milan Chamber of Commerce and Milan Expo 2015, carried out by an SDA Bocconi university team headed by finance professor Alberto dell'Acqua. Celebrity singer-songwriter Andrea Bocelli will sing for the debut of Milan Expo's first soundtrack at a send-off event for the one-year countdown Wednesday evening. The music composed by legendary soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone will be played by the 71 musicians and backed by the 50 choralists of public broadcaster RAI orchestra in the Piazza Gae Aulenti of the Porta Nuova development project.

130 city events for start of Expo 2015

The city administration of Milan and the Milan Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday kicked off the one-year countdown to Milan Expo 2015, unveiling more than 130 events to take place in the city during the month of May 2015. The packed program represents just the first month of the six-month program Expo in Citta (Expo in the City) to coincide with the food-themed Universal Exposition, which takes place May 1 to October 31, 2015. Expo in Citta events fall under 10 key categories: performance, art, media, creativity & style, Leonardo, kids, science, well-being, 'world city' and 'feed the planet'.

Theatre, lectures and concerts - classical, jazz, pop, rock and tango - all fall under "performance", including two free concerts in Milan's Piazza Duomo planned May 16 to 18, and a philharmonic concert May 26. The art world will treat food-related themes in keeping with the Universal Exposition's theme "Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life" with photo and art exhibits, performance art, installations and street art, including a 750-square-metre 'urban garden' poster installation by Michelangelo Pistoletto, a leading proponent of the Italian Arte Povera movement from the late 1960s and '70s. 'Leonardo' refers to Leonardo Da Vinci, the Renaissance polymath who lived and worked in Milan for 17 years, from 1482 to 1499. An installation called Leonardo Icon, created by star architect Daniel Libeskind will be put up in Piazza Pio XI starting May 26. The 'kids' program will provide food-themed 'edutainment', including the theatre piece "Per mangiarti meglio" (The better to eat you) - a play on nutrition and the wolf's words in Little Red Riding Hood - and a didactic farm in the ex-Parco Trotter.

Other schedule highlights include a lecture by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on the ethics of globalization; the Sapori e Saperi (flavors and knowledge) series of conferences and meetings for sharing food-related passions; and an exhibition at the Biennale di Architettura of Venice on urban transformation for Milan and possible post-Expo scenarios. Events in the city scheduled throughout the 184 days of the Universal Exposition are expected to add an estimated two billion euros worth of business activities and employ roughly 20,000 people, according to a study commissioned by the Milan Chamber of Commerce and Milan Expo 2015 carried out by a research team at SDA Bocconi University headed by finance professor Alberto dell'Acqua.

Meanwhile, Italian celebrity singer-songwriter Andrea Bocelli will sing for the debut of Milan Expo's very first musical soundtrack in a send-off event to launch the one-year countdown Wednesday evening. The music composed by legendary cinema composer Ennio Morricone will be performed by the 71 musicians and 50 choralists of the RAI orchestra - the orchestra of the Italian public broadcasting company - in Piazza Gae Aulenti of the Porta Nuova development in semi-central Milan.

China Corporate United Pavilion

With the name "Seeds of China," and drawing on the symbolism of the seed, the China Corporate United Pavilion interprets the dream of a group of Chinese companies that seek to live the values of conservation of natural resources and food security. The entrepreneurial spirit of China, imbued with heritage, perseverance and innovation, is truly epitomized by the living essence of seeds.

In the exhibition spaces, the themes on display are "The Origin of Life," "The Power of Growth," "The Dream of the Seeds," "Light of Life," "Cycle of Life," "The Culinary Arts," and others, showing the path of growth and the role of the business community within the rapid development that China has enjoyed. It is the first time that Chinese companies unite to take part in a Universal Exposition with their own pavilion.

At Expo Milan 2015 China will be present in three different pavilions, that are separate but interconnected with each another: the China Pavilion; the Pavilion of the property developer, Vanke; and the China Corporate United Pavilion, made up of Chinese companies that present themselves to the world, while maintaining the dreams and the hopes of their history; these seeds will continue to shine gloriously in the future.

The image of power that arises from the breaking of ground to the sprouting of seeds has inspired the design of the China Corporate United Pavilion. The life that comes from the green heart, that contains the auditorium space, transforms into the spiral of a DNA chain tracing an upward path, to then take on an elliptical form: the ramp gently accompanies visitors upwards towards the open spaces of the Italian-Chinese garden and the terrace. The pavilion is a temporary construction for these six months. Its simple geometric shape of an outer rectangle – aesthetically lightweight and breathable thanks to the breathable membrane and glass walls – covers the harmonious inner curves that represent the vitality of Chinese enterprises.

The goal is to create a gentle and natural environment: during the day the exhibition gallery uses the center ring for light and air; the heart of the pavilion is wrapped in a cylinder of green walls allowing nature to murmur within its interior, creating a sensory experience that is both natural and unique. The pavilion offers four different itineraries. From the first floor in the exhibition hall and in the auditorium, visitors proceed down to the ground floor and basement where they can enjoy the direct experience of food preparation, and then towards the restaurant and beyond, to the gift shop.

Vanke Pavilion

The Chinese giant and leader in real estate, with its participation in Expo Milano 2015 aims to offer the world a showpiece of contemporary life in China, from the perspective of ordinary people, through the experience and spirit of the Shitang. In its pavilion of 959 square meters are recreated the atmospheres linked to the Shitang which, much more than a simple canteen, represents a traditional social structure, present since ancient times, and which still exists in contemporary Chinese society in various forms. It is a convivial space where they can find inexpensive food and a peaceful, healthy environment.

The participation of the construction company Vanke is one of the three faces of China’s presence at Expo Milano 2015 which is divided into three different pavilions that are separate but interconnected with each another: the China Pavilion, the China Corporate United Pavilion, and the Vanke Pavilion.

The pavilion, located near the Lake Arena, was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind of New York and by Libeskind Architettura in Milan, which conceived it as an extension of the surrounding landscape. The musicality of its proportions, its sinuous geometry and the fluid movement between the inner and outer volume, create a journey through space and time.

The exhibition is organized on two independent routes, from the inside towards the outside, and with a garden that is found on the roof. Visitors are immersed in a forest of poles, with screens which project scenes of lunches, joy, and sharing. The installation, based on the metaphor of roots, trunks and branches symbolizes Vanke’s commitment to the community, which lives among the mutual relationships of people, values and traditions.

Clusters are one of the new attractions of Expo Milano 2015: for the first time the pavilion communities are grouped, not by geographical area, but by a common theme and food group to which they belong. This approach applies the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life in its broadest sense, instilling these spaces with the spirit of sharing, dialogue and interaction for which they were created. Each individual cluster is positioned within the exhibition to offer maximum visibility to visitors. The clusters are grouped together by theme and are located close to the Biodiversity Park, which is an area of importance within the exhibition site. The supply chain cluster is close to the Decumano in between the individual countries’ pavilions. Clusters are also the starting points for different thematic journeys. This will allow countries that participate in the exhibition with their own pavilions to still be included within a cluster journey path, together with the countries of the cluster itself, providing added value to the whole thematic event.
