Messe Frankfurt begins work on German Pavilion
Messe Frankfurt has begun work on the construction of the German Pavilion for the upcoming Expo Milano 2015, following a ground breaking ceremony at the Expo grounds recently. Speaking at the ground breaking Dietmar Schmitz, Commissioner General for Trade Fair Policies and EXPO Participation at the BMWi, said, “It is a great pleasure for me to make the first cut of the spade on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. As of today the German Pavilion will take shape more and more every day.” The World Expo takes place every five years, and Dubai will host the next event in 2020. The Milan Expo follows previous editions in Hannover (2000), Nagakute (Japan, 2005) and Shanghai (China, 2010).

Messe Frankfurt is considered the world’s largest trade fair corporation with its own exhibition grounds. The company has a presence in more than 150 countries around the globe. Over the course of the year, events ‘made by Messe Frankfurt’ take place in more than 30 locations. In 2013 alone, Messe Frankfurt organised a total of 114 trade fairs, of which 71 were held outside Germany, with eight having been held in Dubai. “Messe Frankfurt being chosen as organiser of the German Pavilion is a great honour and acknowl-edgement of its years’ of expertise in conducting trade events around the world,” said Ahmed Pau-wels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt’s Middle East subsidiary, Epoc Messe Frankfurt. “With Dubai being our regional headquarters and the venue for the Expo 2020, we are glad to offer all our support and expertise to the authorities in their efforts to organise a truly spectacular event,” he added.

Milan prepares to take Expo 2015 citywide

For the first time in the history of world expositions, the Expo Milano 2015 will take place not only at the site, but also throughout Milan with an intense program of initiatives aimed at fully involving visitors and residents in the expo's spirit. "We have set up the Expo in Citta (Expo in the City) project, thanks to which public and private actors will be able to organize a number of expo-themed events over the six-month period," Milan's Councillor for Commerce Franco D'Alfonso told Xinhua in a recent interview. The project was launched in Milan's typical tradition of bringing events out of the sites and palaces where they take place, such as in the case of the Milan's Furniture Fair and the Milan Fashion Week which both extend to the whole city, D'Alfonso pointed out. Many foreign countries will have their own "villages" located in various strategic places of Milan, including China that D'Alfonso described as the country with "strongest presence" (one national pavilion and two corporate pavilions) in the expo.

Meanwhile, the city's cultural institutions and heritage sites from world-famous opera house Teatro alla Scala to Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle) will offer visitors impressive agendas of art exhibitions, musical concerts, sports events and countless festivals to satisfy all tastes. Citizens have been also asked to actively take part in the expo's organization. "Though Milan and surrounding territories will have no problem in granting accommodation to visitors, more information channels need to arise from residents," the councillor went on explaining to Xinhua. "We have carried out public awareness campaigns across Milan, from accommodation facilities and restaurants to shops and taxi networks, to encourage good practices in tourism and friendly hospitality," he said. Results have been very positive so far, he added noting that over 90 percent of citizens are currently cognizant of the upcoming event, according to surveys.

Among the communication projects aimed at facilitating information sharing, some 100 "expo-branded points" will be disseminated across news-stands and hotels during the expo to help tourists orient themselves and find all what they need. "Everyone should stay at least five days in Milan, which deserves being explored both in the iconic venues, such as the ancient system of navigable canals around the city which is being restored, and the less-known neighborhoods hiding unimaginable treasures," D'Alfonso highlighted. "Visit the Monumental Cemetery" was his personal advice. "It is the biggest open air museum in the world," he said referring to the cemetery's huge range of sculptures and monuments. But in his view, even more important than the "certainly successful expo" will be the valuable legacy left by such an integrated effort for offering a better city both to its inhabitants and to all those who will have the opportunity to visit Milan in the coming years.

Fashion, design, science, live music... : more than 15,000 events in Milan.
For the first time in World Expo history, the entire host city will be involved.

The Universal Exhibition of Milan 2015 has already achieved some records as the highest number of national pavilions, as well as having created for the first time the clusters, where different participating countries linked by a common factor, will be reunited in thematic pavilions. But surely Expo 2015 will be remembered over the world, because for the first time in the history of World Expo, the Milanese edition will be bring out from its site (ie where there are pavilions & co.). The entire Italian city will be involved during the 6 months event (May 1 / October 31).

Live music with great artists, lectures on the global economic-social challenges (but not only), high fashion shows, great design, art exhibitions, theater, sports, quality wine/food tasting, science, agriculture and children: it's a true open palimpsest, still under construction. Tons of things to do and see. Expo's organizators are already drawing maps of the places where tourists will find all of this. It's a project, called FuoriExpo, where public and private merge their energies, and on which the City Government is focusing a lot.

Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, said: "Expo 2015 will not live only on its site, but will live in the city, from the historic center to all more exclusive districts". From the special season of the Teatro La Scala to the Piccolo Teatro, from the very special editions of the Book Festival City, Piano City and Music Festival and the exhibitions at the Royal Palace, Sforza Castle or other museums, to the concerts in Piazza Duomo, in the shadow of the cathedral. The six-month Expo will be inaugurated in the city by a special art installation. In October 2015 a novelty: "A Water Festival that will combine science, culture and performing arts."

United Kingdom. The Hive

Quote:
As visitors make their way though the meadow they will gaze upon the hive in the distance. It glistens like a beacon on the horizon, much like the sun enabling life on earth.

The structure is inspired by and stands as an abstract reinterpretation of the architecture of bees. Key attributes of the honeycomb have been expressed: translucency, topology, geometric variation, and distribution of multiple functions, layers. These have been re-composed in a new way, using artifice to draw out these intrinsic qualities. Throughout the creative process it has been important to create something that suggestions traces of the key ideas and content; yet open to interpretation, leaving ample room for personal subjectivity to engage in the experience.

Awesome job updating the thread IThomas

Pavilion México

The theme underpinning the Mexican Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015, “Mexico, the Seed for the New World: Food, Diversity and Heritage”, was inspired by the symbol of traditional Mexican cuisine, maize – or rather the “totomoxtle” – the husk of the corncob.

The 1,900 m² pavilion will be entirely clad in natural, semi-transparent fibre, offering glimpses of the interior, where spiral ramps will connect the various floors housing the exhibition spaces, a restaurant and a botanical garden.

Visitors to the Expo 2015 Pavilion will find themselves immersed in the sensorial world of traditional Mexican cuisine, with its typical and unique blend of smells, tastes, colours and sounds.

Milan Expo time travels through Arts and Foods Pavilion

Visitors to the Arts & Foods Pavilion at Milan Expo 2015 will have the chance to travel through time to discover some of the ways in which food and the aesthetics of art and design have intersected. The pavilion will be hosted at the Triennale Design Museum and promises a journey starting in 1851, the date of the first Expo world's fair. "Arts & Foods will involve all forms of media and all languages, from sculpture to painting, from video to advertising, from design to architecture," said Germano Celant, an Italian art historian, critic and curator of the pavilion. Arts & Foods will include contributions from artists, writers, directors, graphic designers, musicians, photographers, interior designers, and architects, all concerning the development of artistic expressions of how people view and consume food.

Celant said the pavilion will showcase "shared public and private places and spaces where furnishings, objects, appliances, and works of art create a narrative with a strong visual impact and sensory impression". The pavilion aims to document, through various art forms, the many ways in which people relate to and interact with food, from simple cooking utensils, to table settings and picnics, as well as food in public spaces like coffee bars and restaurants, and the changes that have come about through road, air, and space travel. The Arts & Foods Pavilion will open its doors on April 10, 2015 and run through November 1. The theme of Milan Expo 2015 is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", with the world's fair focussed on food security, sustainable practices, nutrition, and the best of global culinary cultures. Celant is best known for coining the term "arte povera" (literally "poor art"), a modern art movement, in 1968, and is a leading authority on the subject.

Welcome to Italy eyes heritage for Expo

A "Welcome to Italy" social media project this week began showcasing Italy's artistic, historic and landscape heritage through 100 historic postcards posted by the Italian tourism institution Touring Club Italiano. The idea is to spark interest in visiting Italy in time for the food-themed Milan Expo 2015, which runs May to October 2015. Expo's theme is "Feeding the planet. Energy for Life" focuses on nutrition, food security, sustainable food practices - and celebrates global culinary cultures. Promoted by Milan Expo 2015, the virtual tour displays archival photos of Italy's most beautiful or remarkable sites every day on Facebook and Twitter through September 15.

A site created on Tumblr is taking Internet perusers through an album of 200 sight-seeing images of lakes, mountains, beaches, cities and monuments until Expo's opening on May 1, 2015. Meanwhile, a project to make all information concerning the planning, organisation and financial management of Expo 2015 available on internet "is a decisive step forward" for transparency, CEO Giuseppe Sala said at a presentation this week. Open Expo is the result of an agreement between the World's Fair and Italian open government initiative Wikitalia. The project will "accompany - by simplifying, going into greater detail and especially ensuring easier access to data -the work that already appears in the Transparent Administration section of the website", Sala said.

In addition, two contests dedicated to women in the context of Milan Expo 2015 have opened their call for entry submissions. One competition will honour the best start-up projects undertaken by women. The second will award the best projects for promoting women. The competitions are an initiative of Women for Expo (WE), a joint project between Milan Expo 2015, the Italian pavilion and the Italian foreign ministry. The first three winners will receive 40,000 euros, 30,000 euros and 10,000 euros respectively, in addition to exhibit exposure in the Italian pavilion at Expo. The third prize will be reserved for contestants under age 35.

The top 100 entries will receive exhibit space in the Italian pavilion for seven days during Expo in a dedicated section of the Italy pavilion as well as online visibility through a Website. Contest entries can be entered on the Website wepadiglioneitalia.ideatre60.it. The deadline for submission is October 31. Businesswomen or aspiring businesswomen, associations, non-governmental organizations and foundations located in Italy are eligible. "It will be women, in fact, who have natural familiarity with the theme of nutrition to take care of and supply energy to life, the inevitable protagonists of the Universal Exposition," said Diana Bracco, general commissioner of the Italian pavilion.

A study this week revealed that Italians increasingly conscious of avoiding food waste, yet will throw away an estimated 8.1 billion euros worth this year, the equivalent of 6.5 euros per week per family. Waste in 2014 is down from an estimated 8.7 billion euros last year, according to the 2014 Waste Watcher Knowledge report by survey research companies SWG and Last Minute Market for Milan Expo 2015. The report added that 63% of Italian respondents said they actively try to prevent food waste and 81% reported checking the expiration date before throwing anything out. One third of the food produced worldwide - or roughly 1.6 billion tons worth 750 billion US dollars - never reaches our stomachs, the report said.
