Expo visitors above forecasts in August

Visitor numbers at Milan's Expo 2015 have beaten expectations so far in August and reached their highest levels since the world fair opened in May, leading to busy pavilions and some queues, Expo commissioner Giuseppe Sala said on Thursday. "The site is packed and we have reached the highest levels since the opening," Sala told RTL 102.5 radio. "Without a doubt we have gone beyond our own forecasts for visitor numbers, which are based on bookings and tour operators," he said. "These suggested that a lot of people were going to come, but we didn't think there would be this many," he said. He said this was leading to a few queues at entrances and in some pavilions and stands.

From early morning to late night, the Expo site is great!

Green spaces, waterway, Italian Pavilion, Lake Arena, Open air-theatre, Pavilion Zero will remain at the expo site. Other national pavilions and Tree of Life will be moved around Milan.

Expo visitors surge on Ferragosto week
Expo visitor numbers surged in the week of the mid-August holiday of Ferragosto Saturday, according to figures released Monday. Some 738,992 visited the world's fair last week, according to data published on the universal exposition's website.

Italy food sales thrive in Expo success
Italian food exports have enjoyed a sharp rise since the start of Milan Expo in May, experts said this week, as officials celebrated the World Fair's success at attracting visitors. Agricultural organization Coldiretti said that exports of Italian agrifood products to the United States and China jumped in June with the help of Milan Expo 2015. Coldiretti analyzed export data from national statistics agency Istat and concluded that agribusiness exports to other European Union countries from Italy in June also rose by 9.7%. Gains shown by the May data ranged from a gain of 29.3% in sales to the US and a jump of 57% in sales to China, and by 5% for exports within the EU. It said the tourism has also been boosted by Expo. One of the big attractions at Expo is called Fab Food - The factory of Italian taste. The exhibition, organised by industry group Confindustria, guides visitors through the different stages of the food chain using games and activities. It aims to explain the concepts of food safety and food security to visitors and gives them a chance to experience first-hand what it means to work daily to improve the planet's nutrition.

Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi would like to host the 43th G7 summit at the Expo site in Milan. Florence was also a candidate city to celebrate the event. The summit will held in 2017.

50 cities from around the world signed the "Milan Food Policy Pact"
How can we provide enough food for everyone? How can we reduce food waste?
Milan has gathered experts, institutions and citizens to contribute to rethinking the urban food system,
to make it more equitable and sustainable.

In July 2014, the City of Milan and Fondazione Cariplo signed an agreement aimed at developing a city’s Food Policy. This is an innovative project, an instrument supporting the city government in developing the city and making it more sustainable and equitable, starting from food-related issues. The objective is to coordinate all policies dealing with these topics from a host of different perspectives: community, welfare, education, environment, well-being and international relations.

Milan has conducted an assessment on the context and dynamics of the city food and agricultural system through data, information and indicators collected on activities and fluxes directly or indirectly related to food. The engagement of these players in the development of the policy will allow to raise awareness among citizens, simultaneously facilitating stakeholders’ contribution for the development of the strategic document “Towards a Food Policy”.

The Milan Urban Food Policy Pact is going to be one of the most important legacies of Expo 2015. Milan is advocating an international protocol, engaging the largest number of world cities for the development of food systems, based on the principles of sustainability and social justice. This commitment for the coordination of international food policies will be subscribed by Mayors on the occasion of a major event during our Universal Exposition, dedicated to two of the most severe emergencies of the third millenium: food security and sustainable development.

The Pact is also an instrument of foreign politics for Milan, starting from the international networks our city is already member of: from its many prominent sister cities to the C40 – Climate Leadership Group, the 69 large world cities committed to the fight against climate change. It was on the occasion of the C40 Summit in Johannesburg last autumn that Mayor Pisapia launched the proposal for a Pact on urban food polcies to his counterpants attending the meeting, to be signed during Expo 2015. In recent months, the “diplomats of the cities” have been collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and the United Nations, in order to engage the largest number of urban realities. The path towards the Pact is proceeding swiftly.

The first draft of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact has just been released. The participants are discussing it. In the meantime the number of cities working on the pact is growing. Here is the list of the cities that have already signed the pact: Abidjan, Almere, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Basel, Beijing, Belo Horizonte, Bilbao, Bogota, Brazzaville, Bruges, Chicago, Curitiba, Daegu, Dakar, Frankfurt, Geneva, Ghent, Gothenburg, Grenoble, Hanoi, Hebron, Lyon, London, Lugano, Maputo, Marseille, Medellin, Melbourne, Mexico City, Milan, Montpellier, Moscow, New York, Niamey, Paris, Rome, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Tel Aviv, Turin, Toronto, Toyama, Vancouver, Windhoek.

I can't believe how little the Expo has shown up in the design/arch blogs I follow. Any obvious contenders for Pavilions To Know, the way we still read about Mies' Barcelona Pavilion?
