Human Technopole: IBM plans to invest up to $150 million

IBM today announced plans to launch its first Watson Health European Center of Excellence in Milan near the Human Technopole Italy 2040 research campus, supporting the government of Italy's initiative to establish an international hub for the advancement of genomics, big data, aging, and nutrition.

The Center is part of a long-term collaboration between IBM and the government of Italy. IBM plans to invest up to $150 million (€135 million) over the next several years and bring together Watson Health data scientists, engineers, researchers and designers to develop a new generation of data-driven healthcare applications and solutions.

Further, the formation of the Center is intended to encourage the development of a pan-European ecosystem for healthcare reform, research, and health-tech start-ups. IBM data scientists, engineers and programmers are expected to work in collaboration with organizations across Europe to create a new class of cloud-based connected solutions at the intersection of cognitive computing, life sciences and healthcare. The Center is expected to provide access to resources and technology designed to help accelerate research into new treatment options, promote personalized medicine, and encourage discoveries aimed at improving overall public health management while advancing sustainable health systems.

Italy is known for its commitment to health and wellness, evidenced by the fact it had the world's 2nd highest life expectancy in 2013 (according to World Health Organization), and has low infant mortality, a healthcare system that is ranked 2nd according to the World Health Organization, and the third best medical performance worldwide.

"Italy is important to IBM – not only because of the creativity, skills and talent of the country's workforce, but also because of the Government's efforts to digitize Italy's economy," said Erich Clementi, senior vice president, IBM Europe.

IBM anticipates that the Center will tap into the Watson Health Cloud and other offerings, which are designed to help enable individualized insights and a more complete picture of the many factors that can affect people's health. The Watson Health cloud platform allows this information to be anonymized, shared, and combined with an aggregated view of other health data to, for example, improve the ability of doctors and medical researchers to identify unexpected new drug targets or enable doctors to personalize treatment options for cancer patients.

Renzi welcomes IBM

“The Italian government is strongly determined to take again a position of leadership in Italy and Europe in this sector,” Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said in a speech during his visit at the IBM center for the Watson project in Boston, where he arrived yesterday.

The prime minister signed an agreement to reuse some of the spaces and structures of Expo Milano 2015 , in Rho, on the outskirts of Milan . The deal marks the creation of IBM's Watson Health European Center of Excellence, which will be dedicated to health and the management of a system of data related to health challenges: from controls and the update of medical records to the optimization of public healthcare spending; genetic experiments, research and the cure of cancer.

“I am happy about this agreement,” Renzi said. “It is the clear example of how, although we are proud of the past, we must project ourselves in the future and IBM will help us in this process.” Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM, said: “We have been working with Italy for almost a century, for us this is an important market and we are happy of being able to invest in the future of Europe, using your country as a platform.”

The agreement is part of the Human Technopole project for the development and reorganization of the Expo 2015 site wanted by the Renzi government.

The cabinet plans to spend up to $150 million in the next years to develop the area, betting especially on projects with high technological content. The project should create around 600 jobs and will concern the Watson center, which manages and develops the operations of the famous supercomputer able to beat champions of the quiz game Jeopardy, as well as to calculate fast genetic mutations that can prevent or try to cure cancer. Watson had long searched European headquarters to develop new applications and sell products generated by the supercomputer.

The facility toured by Renzi was named after the legendary CEO of IBM, Thomas Watson, who transformed a small local business in the global software giant calling it, in 1924, International Business Machines.
