Some good stuff, but way too much material for just one post! Limit yourself to 3 projects per post or something.

Maybe worth mentioning that Krakow has asked the Ministry of Infrastructure if it is possible to build a metro in the city. The project could cost 10-11 billion zloty. 5 billion could come from EU-funds and a private investor is ready to pay 6 billion zloty. It is one of the projects for the bid for the Olympic Winter Games in 2022.

Yeah but it would be important to check it first if it's feasible in long term. Warsaw's metro is one of the useless ones, as it only generates costs that have to be covered from the rest of public transport income. If I remember correctly three or four years ago it was operating at about 60% loss.

Warsaw metro is still rather small, we've just finished the first line so naturally it can't compete with bus & tram network yet because they reach pretty much every part of the city and Warsaw is pretty spread out so you can't really replace them but still many people choose subway to avoid traffic and commute faster.

I think you should check your information on that, the Warsaw metro is very successful and ridership is growing rapidly year on year. Most transit systems are subsidized.

I don't think it changed much since that was already after all the final stations opened, so the bump couldn't be that big in the meantime. Data was provided to me by a professor from the Warsaw University of Technology, so I don't have any reason to not believe in it. Costs or income must have changed radically in the meantime if it was going to be any better. In the light of recent activity of the second line and all the problems that occured, I still think that city pays a double on each ticket they sell.

actually you're right in part, the number of passengers is flat at 140 million per year now, and it dropped by 1 million last year but because a central part was closed due to construction of the second line. I think the number of passengers has probably reached a peak until the 2nd line is finished this year which will add more riders to this line. Warsaw urban rail was what I was thinking about which saw a jump from 17 million to 28 million riders in one year from 2012 to 2013.

BTW, I like your blog, I'm big into sci-fi too.

As for the Krakow metro, I'm not sure if at this time there is enough density along the proposed first line to support such an expense initially, but as we know subway construction and becauise of the large volumes of passengers it can carry generates a lot of new development. So the areas along the proposed Krakow metro should have new zoning in place prior to construction to allow for intensification zones.

Yeah, the amount of passangers is one of my biggest fear for this project. Warsaw wasn't all that great in this aspect as well, since the north and southmost stations were almost dead except for the rush hours. However, with some good planning it could actually work - I'm not an expert anyway.

I am not an expert either, but I see that Warsaw f.e. had 139.2 million passengers in 2012. This with a line of 21.7 km.

Now, comparing with other cities:

- 'The capital of Europe' Brussels: 39.9 km - 132.4 million in 2012
- Dubai - 74.6 km - 109.5 million in 2012
- Amsterdam - 42.5 km - 107.7 million in 2009

This is just a rough comparison, but with only one line, I don't think Warsaw is doing bad. I.e. in terms of passengers. I have searched for a clear financial sheet of the Metro company, but couldn't find one. Now with the 6km of metro more, which goes f.e. to Wola, were there are many skyscrapers and other offices, it will attract many passengers that work there, as well as many new ones that will work in the skyscrapers that are being built there because of the metro.

JanVL, I saw the same stats about other cities, this is very impressive for a metro of 22 kms. Actually overall transit use in Warsaw is very high, including light rail, urban rail, metro, buses is 1 billion 50 million in 2013. Warsaw with 3 million in its region has twice as many transit users than Toronto which has 3.0 million in the immediate metro using the TTC and only 553 million riders last year including urban rail, bus, streetcar/tram and subway/metro.
