I met my now wife through Lavalife. I am far from a social retard, but my social life at the time didn't really avail itself to meeting heaps of new people, and I am a bit shy too at the best of times, which could perhaps impact on first impressions. For me, it allowed me to swim comfortably in my zone - you can work up to meeting up in person, starting with emails then phone calls and then the meet up.

But I did it on and off for a few years leading up to it - met some nice people, with some developing into short term relationships and also friendships once it was realised that it was purely plutonic, but also met lots of duds and psychos. And also Russian women maybe wanting a better life.

It is a lottery and is also based a lot on trust. It's one thing putting up a profile, but the jig is up once you decide to meet up in person and you have embellished your profile.

I have made some nice friends off chatrooms too. Ppl will always have that stigma that they are for ugly ppl etc but many ppl out there are shy and chatrooms can serve as a bit of an icebreaker. Yes I have also met some shockers, plenty of liars when it comes to age etc, those that make no effort to make a good impression in person and posted pics of themselves that are over 5 years old when they were like 20kg lighter and more attractive.

Ive met a few for drinks from gay sites and wow at the amount of guys out there that lie bout their height!!! Im almost 6 foot and met guys claiming to be 6'1 when Im clearly taller or maybe Ive under estimated my height. Internet dating is quite helpful, especially when you're too shy to talk to people in bars/clubs like I am. You can get an idea of someone before investing any time in them too.
