There goes a perfectly good M7. The damage looks repairable though.

This is the proposed 'KRM' line ('Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee') and would use the former CNW 'passenger' line. Funding is 'iffy' at best and is a current political hot potato in Wisconsin, though, and METRA is not keen on operating outside of Illinois. METRA's UP-North line ends in Kenosha, WI because there is room there for a coach yard.

As currently proposed, KRM trains would interchange with METRA trains, but not run through.

IIRC, the track for this line was abandoned and removed north of McHenry over 30 years ago - EXCEPT that no railroad was ever built between Lake Geneva and Elkhorn, it would have to be a new-ROW on a virgin routing. The former CNW did operate a commuter line that ran northwestward out of Lake Geneva for a very short distance, but that line then curved southwestward to run along the south shore of Lake Como, terminating in Williams Bay, WI. That service was abandoned in either the 1960s or 1970s and the track removed. An additional complication, there is a serious elevation difference between Lake Geneva and Elkhorn, the grade would be at the north edge of Lake Geneva.

I agree, FRA's crashworthiness standards are a bit over the top, but don't over simplify things by saying "slightly less crumpling".

Train vs. SUV.
Don't assume the train always wins.

Someone is obviously doing something wrong engineering wise when a 4000 lb SUV can take down a half a million pound train.

All it takes is guards in front of the wheels.

It hit the side, not the front, but yes the US does tend to overbuild. But you can't built vehicles too weak or they are unsafe.

Well, as they say, safety above anything else. and keep in mind the glendale accident was due to the fact that the cab car was leading. Had the locomotive been at the head of the train, chances of a derailment would have been drastically decreased. In fact, it is that accident IN ADDITION to the Chatsville incident back in i wanna say 2008 that has builders upping safety standards on passenger cars for the US market.

On another note, here's a great video of an ALP-45DP accelerating. It is quite peppy:

You mean the cab car that weighs over 130,000 lbs? as much as 33 SUVs?

Still doesn't make it right, there have been accidents in Europe where a lighter cab car (maybe 45-50 tonne) hits even bigger vehicles and does not derail.

Train derailments with small vehicles never are caused by the mass of the small vehicle, the weight difference between a railroad car and even a large pickup truck are vast, the RRC weighing still about two dozen times more. The derailments are caused by debris going under the wheels, which is why there needs to be better wheel protection, it doesn't matter if a cab car is leading, unless the train hits a massive loaded truck even the cab cars weight is enormous compared with road vehicles.

Actualy, with modern technologies, like Jacobs bogies, "weak zones" and etc. you don't need to make an overweighted cars to maintain safety anymore.
