I found new cool stuff for Riga. Company 1188 version of Google Street View (beta version).

To enjoy journey around Riga You need to loging (it's free). You need to send SMS with text "START and your password" (for example "START password01") to 1188. I believe, that it is not working outside Latvia, but You can use one of our (latvian user) accounts.

Of course, it's great. Just I was working with something similar and even found one foreign guy who is interested to invest to make it serious... Now it's senseless, if 1188 has made such thing already.

Explored their service - it's great that they've covered all centre and a few other places and the interface is simple, user-friendly, it's easier to navigate there than in Google Street View, where you sometimes can get lost. But the picture quality could be much better, it's mostly worse than in Google Street View and the worst thing is that overcasted weather which makes Riga look so dark and depressive in those pics.. Not the best impression about the city it creates. Why they had to spoil all this job with choosing wrong time when to drive around and make the pictures? Couldn't they wait for some sunny days??

Great to hear this. I will definitely be having a jolly good time while virtual-touring about Riga. I just wonder whether something similar is available from other Baltic countries/cities?

But have you tryed Panoramio? It is "is a geolocation-oriented photo sharing website" - server where everyone could add their pictures of the site attaching them to point on the Google maps. Actually the pictures on the Google Earth are taken from Panoramio. Maybe you know already this.

This is Imanta by me. If you would click on "Popular" on the left upper corner you would get photos of all authors.

Panoramio also offers something like Microsoft Photosynth (a software that analyzes digital photographs and generates a three-dimensional model of the photos and a point cloud of a photographed object) feature. In Panoramio it works in a bit simplier way - like here - you should click on "Look around" beneath the picture.

The last thing I read was that it is allowed but they must announce where and when will they take the pics.

Why should they get some permits for driving and taking photos in public places? Is it related to traffic organization? How fast those Google cars are driving?

Something to do with personal privacy. In Germany Google streetview is illegal for the same reason. Shame that our government so easely allowed google to operate here and take pictures of everything and everyone they want plus google illegally collects data from WiFi networks while driving around, there already was a big scandal in France about google streeview stealing email passwords and banking information from WiFi networks.
