FIFA hails Russia’s World Cup preparations

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has hailed Russia’s early preparations for the 2018 World Cup as “outstanding”.

While the tournament is still seven years away, preparations are already ongoing with Valcke revealing that the selection of the 12 host cities would be decided by March 2013 at the latest, with detailed inspections and analysis ongoing until then. Speaking at the ‘Russia – Country of Sports’ forum in 2018 World Cup candidate city Saransk, Valcke said: “Each city is well prepared to get started. We are working here in Russia and, together with the LOC (local organising committee); we are ahead of schedule in delivering the FIFA World Cup.”

Valcke added: “I am not saying it will be all easy, but the approach and preparation of Russia is outstanding at this point of time.” The FIFA chief added that sustainability will be an important feature of Russia’s legacy plans. “The key is that all of what is built will not only be used for the World Cup but beyond,” he said. “Football should be used for education. The time of white elephants is over.”

He continued: “Sustainability is the key. I was pleased to see that Saransk – if they are chosen as a host city – plans to build a 45,000 stadium for the FIFA World Cup in such a way that it can easily be reduced to a 28,000 one after the event, because that is what the city needs. That is the approach the cities need to take when planning, and I have seen the Russian cities are doing exactly that.”

LOC chairman and Russia’s Minister of Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy, Vitaly Mutko, added: “Stadiums are being built in Sochi, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Saransk, and Kazan. Next year we plan to design seven other arenas. In the next two to three months, a list of all the facilities needed for the World Cup will be set.”

In other news, Russia 2018 has signed a cooperation agreement with the country's leading news agency RIA Novosti. The deal gives the state-owned agency wide access to the team responsible for delivering Russia’s first World Cup. “With the help of RIA Novosti we will promote our news connected with preparations for the World Cup,” said Mutko.

All right. Moscow city and Moscow Region (area around the city) are not the same, it's two different federal subjects, which have different regional governments. And it was clear that there will no built stadium in Moscow Region, because there is no regional club, who will be play at such big stadium.

So, as many Russian predicted, where will be two stadiums for World Cup in Moscow city:
1) Luzhniki (after reconstruction);
2) Spartak (after completion of construction) or Dynamo (after general reconstruction).

I'm only disappointed that Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko said that second stadium for WC will be stadium, which will be built earlier than other. In this case, most probably, it will be Spartak Stadium, design and location of which is worse than Dynamo Stadium.

Russia to apply for 2023 Rugby World Cup

Russia, who have just made their debut at the biggest rugby event on the planet, are to bid to host the 2023 World Cup.

The president of the Russian Rugby Union, Vyacheslav Kopiev, voiced the decision at the organization’s executive committee meeting on Thursday.

The Rugby Worlds are held every four years, with England staging the event in 2015 and Japan in 2019.

Team Russia lost all their four games at their maiden World Cup, which is now underway in New Zealand, but managed to make a good impression, collecting eight tries – more than any other debutant.
Meanwhile, Russia are preparing to host the 2013 World Cup in Rugby Sevens, which is now an Olympic discipline.

According to Kopiev, the Russian team’s task is to win the home event as they are one the leaders in the sport.

Russia is going to host a number of massive sporting events in the next couple of years, including the 2014 Sochi Winter Games and the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

This is Khazar Stadium, former home stadium of FC Anzhi Makhachkala. It was opened on July 22, 2003. The first match: FC Anzhi - Kuban Krasnodar 1:0. Capacity: 19.600.

However, due strong winds at this site, since 2006 FC Anzhi is using Dynamo Stadium in Makhachkala (21.000) for home matches. Currently Khazar Stadium on reconstruction, it planned to be open on spring 2012. Its capacity will be increased to 27.000.

In the later future they planned to built new modern stadium - "Anzhi City" (40.000) - for home matches.
