Well, if it is gonna be like GCDA (recently, that is) that is used to park the past sell by date politicos, enough said.

What we need is expanding the city to reflect the reality, not another toothless 'authority' who have no, well, "authority"

Moral policing: Woman IT official attacked in Kochi

Moral policing: Woman IT official attacked in Kochi

KOCHI: A 31-year-old woman working at the IT park in Kochi was attacked by 'moral police' when she was travelling with her male friend to the office at 10 pm on Sunday. The woman has been hospitalised.

Tasni Banu and her friend had stopped at a roadside tea shop near the IT park when a group of about 10 people started making lewd comments on them.

The group warned them that "Kochi was not Bangalore" and that they should not be seen in public places at night. "They wanted to know where we came from and what we do" said Tasni.

"My friend gave all his details, but I declined and instead questioned him as to why I should tell such details to a stranger," said Tasni.

The two were about to leave on their bike as they realised that some of the group members were drunk. Suddenly, one of them started abusing them. She got down from the bike and questioned the man. He slapped her repeatedly. "I almost fainted," said Tasni.

The police arrived after her friends called up the emergency number. But by then the attacker had vanished. She was taken to the police station. A badly bruised Tasni told cops that she would be able to give her statement the next day. However, her condition worsened and she had to be hospitalised.

Chief Minister Oomen Chandy on Tuesday called for a report on the incident following complaints that police acted late. The police team then visited her at the hospital and took her statement.

"Kerala has seen a dangerous rise in the number of rowdy elements. I was confronted by at least 10 men. I ask myself should women get the approval of local 'moral police' before going out with their friends at night?" Tasni said.

There is a serious resentment among the mass about the ITVty crowd on many counts. They resent the relative affluence. They resent the cars. And on top of all, the young men resent the well dressed women, and the men who get to work with them and interact with them.

It is an unfortunate fact that we are still a $ex starved society. So, any man going with a woman is a target of envy. If they are an unmarried couple, the envy goes out of the roof. Some added 'stimulants of the mind' would make them bold enough to do crazy things. During day time, and in the presence of many people, such boldness will not happen, and the envy will just steam within.

All you can do is to AVOID such encounters. They shouldn't have stopped for the cigarette there. It is only common sense.

Before people jump around, with questions like "do you justify the act?", let me clarify that you should have common sense and avoid problems. Asking you to lock your doors does not mean I am justifying thieves.

Sanju, IIRC, that landing approach is normally not done. The normal approach is from south.

Ah! Such harsh words. I didn't see it. I swear! But I do believe it when you people say that Trivandrum has highrises. Btw I was at the domestic airport. So that might be a reason?

This is true upto some extend. The place Kakkanad (From Vallathol Jn to Chittethukara and Infopark-Navadoya ) is remains rural and for most of the basic human needs we have to travel to Vazhakkala or Palarivattom.

And Everyone knows the status of public transport facilities there.

For Sarah, the promised land is Kochi

KOCHI: Most of the Jews, settled here for over a century, have left seeking greener pastures of their promised land Israel.
But Sarah Jacob Cohen is not the one to leave the land of her birth and move to Israel.
Though she is the oldest member of the dwindling Jewish community in the state, she takes pride in calling herself a Keralite.
Saying that the thought of leaving India never arose even in her remotest dreams, she asks, “How could you leave a place where your heart lies?,” she asks
“I am an Indian and this is my place. I was born and brought up here. It has many memories that I clasp to my bosom.”
“ I met my husband here. I cannot sever my ties with this country which is a treasure trove of fond memories,” she says, her voice wobbling with emotion.
Though age has started taking a toll on her memory, she could talk about her fairy-tale marriage at length. Sarah met her husband Jacob Cohen in Kochi and they tied the knot after much struggle. Despite Cohen being a Jew, her father did not want his daughter to marry a lawyer.
“That was a real tough time. In 1942, he took me to Bombay to get me married off the way he wanted. But I heaved a sigh of relief when Cohen came there to take me. He did his level best to convince my father and we got married then and there. I would call it ‘1942: A love story,’” Sarah said coyly.
She visited her homeland twice. “I visited Israel long time back, probably in the 70s. Although I am a Jew, I never felt it as my own place. Unlike Keralites, people in Israel seemed cloistered and it took time to get a friendly nod from them. There I realised how affectionate Keralites are,” she says. Though Sarah is fond of Kerala, she never ever budged from her religious vows.
“I have never skipped my prayers. It is a bit sad that we cannot offer prayers in the synagogue, as it needs a quorum of 10 men. But it never made me less religious,” she explains. Such religious fervour means that she has problem in procuring non-vegetarian food, as a Jew is not supposed to eat from outside the community.
Scaled fish, too, is a taboo. “Earlier, there were Jews who used to provide non-vegetarian food. But when the Jew population started dwindling, it came to an end. I buy canned food exported from Israel,” she says.
When asked about the religious chaos that has plagued India, she sighs, “The situation is quite saddening. But India has always been a safe haven for us. I was never apprehensive about our existence here. Thaha and his wife, who help me in my daily chores, are Muslims. I am sure that we would never face any sort of threats from any religion.”
She also laments that the last Jewish wedding she witnessed was way back in 1978.
“Most of the young people have migrated to Israel. I do not know when I would see another wedding,” she shrugs.
Sarah runs a hand-embroidery shop adjacent to the Jewish synagogue, which was built in 1568 when Jewish spice traders set up businesses in this small outpost of the Jewish world.
“I knit Jewish caps called kippa. It is a skull cap often worn by Jewish men as they are not supposed to walk bareheaded. It is also worn by women too. This cap is an identity.
Without this, the men are not supposed to enter the synagogue,” she said. “I love knitting. I also have special Jewish items like halah cover, mezuza cover and menorah at my store,” she says.

People with western orientation start from the assumption that Jews are persecuted everywhere, and Muslims are sworn enemies of them. That is the reason for all these talk and wonder.

Jews are just another community here, just like anyone else. Of course, their numbers are less. I am sure the number of bahais and parsis are also less here. What's the bigg deal?

True.... Cochin Jews was just like any other community, living like any other Muslim or Christian or Hindu. Perhaps it might be a wonder for westerners to see 4 centers of worship all located within 100 m radius in Fort Kochi, but it was there for more than 300 years and people didn't bother anything abt it.

Two warships of the Japanese Navy Japan Maritime Self Defence Force, Japanese Defence Ship Samidare and JDS Umigiri, berthed at Kochi on Thursday. The ships were en route to their anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden.

The destroyers, captained by Hideyuki Ooban, Commander Escort Division Four, were received at the entrance of the harbour by INS Kabra.
Akitaka Saiki, Ambassador of Japan in India, arrived in Kochi for the occasion and was at the jetty to receive the warships. The Southern Naval Command band was also in attendance at the formal reception accorded to the visiting ships on berthing at the jetty.

The itinerary for the visiting ships included mutual visits and other exchanges.
The ambassador, accompanied by the Defense Attache of Japan, met Vice-Admiral K N Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, at the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command. He also visited some of the naval training facilities. Later, in a briefing for the visiting delegation, the two sides exchanged their knowledge and experience on anti-piracy operations.
Japan Maritime SelfDefence Force has been contributing to international antipiracy efforts in the Gulf of Aden for more than two years like the Indian Navy which has been carrying out antipiracy patrols in the region since October 2008.
