In case you didn't realise, the other side of the Torrens is "parkland". NIMBY's would have a field day protesting against any idea of such development. Not going to happen.

Firstly, why should Adelaide copy Melbourne? and secondly, it's not exactly a good idea to build up both sides of a river, better to leave one side open as a flood plane, you know just incase..

and I dont like to think of myself as a nimby but i'd rather see the casino, apartments, hotels and office towers get built in the very under-developed CBD instead of in the parklands.

The parklands across the river is one of the few places where it's green all year round. Destroying that would be devastating not only to NIMBY's but many people in Adelaide including himself.
It's also a good place to take chicks out on dates but thats beside the point.

By the way, Hey guys ^_^ it's iTouch(Myself) from Sensational-Adelaide.

Baulderstone and Woods Bagot have won a large contract to extend the Adelaide Convention Centre, with construction to commence later this year.

Main concepts aren't expected to be released until late next month. However these concepts bellow give you an idea of what the North Terrace frontage may look like, while the grass areas on top of the Convention Centre looks far to much fantasy and pointless.

The last picture look quit nice, the grass on the roof top is going to far imo.

Some taller buildings in this shot would set it off.

Should make it clear those concepts are from Hassell which was unsuccessful in bidding for the tender, so don't take those concepts above too seriously.

P.S those rowing sheds need to be demolished and relocated somewhere else along the Torrens River.

Adelaide Casino's $250m upgrade progressing
MEREDITH BOOTH From: AdelaideNow February 17, 2011 12:00AM

ADELAIDE Casino owner Sky City has shortlisted two designs for its $250 million riverside redevelopment.

One of the designs is from an SA-based architect, chief executive Nigel Morrison said.

The New Zealand-based group, which announced a 2.2 per cent fall in net half year profit of $51 million yesterday, said plans were well progressed for the redvelopment to include a boutique hotel, expanded gaming facilities, bars, restaurants and carparking.

Mr Morrison, who will unveil more detail on the development in a couple of weeks, said Adelaide also had great potential to increase its visits from high-roller gamblers from interstate and overseas with relaxed regulation on gaming machines.

He said international gamblers from China and Thailand helped double revenue at its Auckland casino in the first half to $1.1 billion, something Adelaide Casino could capitalise on.

"These players can spend $20,000 to $30,000 on a gaming machine. This is probably like you or I spending $10. But in Adelaide they all work with coins," Mr Morrison said.

He said SA needed to relax regulations, in line with the nation, to allow credit card-style machines in its VIP gaming areas for these "high net worth individuals", some of them locals flown to interstate casinos rather than in Adelaide.

"The Government's losing a lot of tax on that."

Adelaide Casino lifted revenue by just $500,000 to $74.4 million but pre-tax earnings climbed 5.6 per cent to $16.1 million in the six months to December 31 thanks to "good cost controls and food and beverage revenue", Mr Morrison said.

Smoking bans in Darwin impacted on Australian casino earnings which fell 2 per cent to $NZ47.2 million and the economic environment this year would contine to remain "challenging", he said.

He said the casino mirrored the fortunes of Australian discretionary retailers.

Sky City reiterated its full year profit forecast would be about $96.1 million

Casino's $250m vision
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/s...-1226028203443
SKYCITY casino has unveiled its vision of a renewed Adelaide Riverbank Precinct.

The casino today publicly backed a revitalisation of the area on the back of the proposed $535 million Adelaide Oval project that would give the area some "critical mass".

The company is currently considering a $250 million overhaul of its heritage site. SkyCity last year celebrated its 25th year at the railway station.

The vision includes a new floor extending out over car parking to the river with strong lines in keeping with the Festival Centre.

Large glass panes would allow gamers to look out over the riverbank from a site no more than 700 metres from the area’s key attractions – including a redeveloped Adelaide Oval.

SkyCity chairman Rod McKeogh told an Advantage Adelaide luncheon that the redevelopment represented a "once in a lifetime opportunity" to redevelop a key part of Adelaide's infrastructure.

"You really are sitting on a phenomenal opportunity."

SkyCity today met with State Government Ministers Patrick Conlon and Jack Snelling to discuss the project including the regulatory framework against which the Casino operates.

"We want to make sure they understand what we think about it and the part we want to play in it," he said.

Mr McKeogh urged Adelaide residents to support the Adelaide Oval redevelopment as it would give the city a key attractor an oval on the city's fringe that would drive tourism.

The nearby Convention Centre is also about to start a $394 million upgrade it believes will put it ahead of the game by attracting large international events to Adelaide's riverfront.

THE Riverbank precinct will become Adelaide's new city centre, stretching from King William Rd along the Torrens to the old Adelaide Gaol site.

As the Government unveils the final designs today for the $350 million Adelaide Convention Centre expansion, above, Premier Mike Rann says he has asked the Capital City Committee to draw up options for the jail site and also the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site.

"These developments are going to change the face of Adelaide," he told The Advertiser.

"It is all about revitalising the city centre. We had a city which had turned its back on the river and now we are making the river the centre of the city.

"We need to look at what we can do and to have a new vista stretching all along the river, taking in the convention centre, the new medical centre and the new hospital until it gets to the old Adelaide Gaol site."

He said they would be the Government's next two big projects.

Mr Rann said the convention centre redevelopment meant that, along with the hospital and SA Health Medical Research Institute, the Riverbank would become the state's biggest ever building site.

The new convention centre designs have been inspired by the SA landscape, according to Deputy Premier John Rau, who was also involved in the Capital City Committee talks yesterday.

He said work would begin on the first stage of the expansion, abutting the Morphett St bridge, in September and be completed by 2014.

Stage one will have 4300sq m of multi-purpose convention space, meeting spaces and a 1000-seat ballroom built over the railway tracks up to the bridge.

Vehicles will be able to drive straight off the bridge to drop passengers at a new main entry.

The second stage, which features a distinctive hi-tech glass arrow structure capable of seating 3500 people, will be completed in June 2017.

Mr Rau said the distinctive structure was meant to evoke a cut gemstone.

He said the project, aimed at boosting the convention centre's economic and tourism contribution to SA by more than $1.9 billion over the next 25 years, would provide Adelaide with "two of its most remarkable buildings". The new buildings are a collaboration between Adelaide-based international architectural firm Woods Bagot and London-based architect Larry Oltmans from the company Vx3.

He said people would be able to walk from the Festival Centre to the Morphett St bridge on two levels - along the riverbank and a bridge-level walkway featuring cafes and restaurants.

"They (the new buildings) will re-establish Adelaide as a key national and international conference destination," Mr Rau said.

He said the buildings would allow the centre to host more and larger conferences, and "establish a stunning visual identity for Adelaide".

Mr Rau said the expansion would also act as a catalyst to attract further private investment along North Tce, including premium clothing stores, and more restaurants and accommodation.

The first stage of the redevelopment will be undertaken by a consortium including Woods Bagot, Vx3, Baulderstone, Aurecon, Bestec, Rider Levett Bucknall and Thinc Projects.

Convention centre chairwoman Jane Jeffreys said the centre had been an economic success story for SA since its establishment as Australia's first purpose-built venue in 1987.

"It will create one of the largest, most flexible and up-to-date meeting places in the world," she said.

"The development will also remove the capacity restraints, which meant we have in recent years lost hosting opportunities interstate and overseas."

Development is expected to be a key element of a headland speech Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond will make today to the Urban Development Institute.

Premier Mike Rann announces Festival Centre facelift
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/premie...-1226145356760

WITH site works for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital starting this coming week, Premier Mike Rann has revealed plans for a major upgrade of the Adelaide Festival Centre.

Joining Health Minister John Hill yesterday to officially turn the first sod for the new RAH, Mr Rann told the Sunday Mail a Festival Centre upgrade would be part of a transformation of the entire Torrens riverbank precinct.

"We are essentially masterplanning the whole riverbank and North Tce precinct, from the $1 billion development at Bowden-Brompton, right through to Hackney," Mr Rann said.

"There will be 1800 workers at the new RAH site at its peak, the new SA Health and Medical Research Institute which will house almost 700 researchers next door is well under way, the Adelaide Convention Centre expansion starts this month and the new Adelaide Oval work starts in March.

"We are also going to start work on a major upgrade of the Adelaide Festival Centre - it really does need a big overhaul.

"Money is being put aside for a masterplan to redevelop the Festival Centre as part of the riverbank rejuvenation."

The 38-year-old Festival Centre was singled out in a 2010 Arts SA report criticising the State Government for a lack of investment in Adelaide's outdated arts venues, many of which were considered unsafe and in poor condition.

Arts figures such as Adelaide Symphony Orchestra chief executive Barbara George have previously called for a major upgrade, while centre chief executive Douglas Gautier said an upgrade was needed so Adelaide could continue to draw big-name productions.

Other precinct areas mentioned by Mr Rann as ripe for development or increased use included the old Adelaide Gaol, Thebarton police barracks and the existing RAH site.

"There are heritage issues but also the opportunity to create one of the world's great cultural boulevards that blends heritage buildings with new heritage through design excellence," he said.

"The old RAH site is in a magnificent position - you get rid of the ugly buildings, keep the heritage buildings and there is all sorts of potential, such as extending the Botanic Gardens and using buildings for universities or galleries.

"You could have a new Aboriginal museum on the site with the fantastic collection of artefacts and artwork now housed in the SA Museum and Art Gallery - that is just an idea of the sort of thing that could be done."

Mr Rann said the new RAH would be one of the biggest hospitals in the world "and the best in Australia".

"There is no stopping the new RAH now," he quipped as he turned the first sod, resisting the temptation to throw the dirt at assembled media as former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett famously did at a sod-turning ceremony.

Asked if the hospital would be big enough to cope with demand, given recent cases of hospitals being full beyond capacity, Mr Hill said it would have 30 per cent more capacity than the existing RAH, with room to expand by another 30 per cent on the site.

"When this opens in 2016, we will have the capacity to meet the needs of the public into the future, and there is still plenty of space to expand in the future," Mr Hill said.

"The new hospital is an important part of our statewide health reforms and has been designed to adapt to the changing needs of the population."

Work to prepare the site for construction will begin this coming week, including bulk excavations and underground services such as sewerage pipes.

Soil testing is complete and officials say the results have not shown anything present that would not be expected on a former railyard of this size and age.

Draft master plan for revitalized riverbank made public

The State Government has today released details of the draft Master Plan for one of the most exciting urban development projects in the city in decades - the revitalisation of Adelaide’s Riverbank precinct.

Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon said the draft plan, developed by a consortium led by Ashton Raggat McDougall (ARM), included 11 key guiding principles that will provide direction and a reference point for future development of the Riverbank.

New Riverbank Looking West

“ARM has identified considerable opportunities for the private sector to play a vital role in redeveloping this underutilised Riverbank precinct,” Minister Conlon said.

“These opportunities include new multi-storey commercial buildings, potential for expansion for existing operators such as the Casino and the Intercontinental and new food and beverage outlets.

“We also believe there is room for associated and appropriate retail activity to make the area more attractive for visitors, tourists and residents.”

The consortium has identified six “new” destinations in Riverbank which should be considered as part of the revitalization:

Riverbank Key Destinations

Festival Square: Would involve replacing the existing Hajek Plaza with a new gathering place consisting cafes, restaurants, commercial buildings and a new foyer for the Festival Centre.

New Elder Park: Aims to create a new park for the 21st century by reshaping the grassed area to cater for larger gatherings and performances.

River West: Creating a new vibrant area between the Convention Centre and Festival Centre. Would enhance the riverbank experience by integrating food and beverage outlets into the grassed riverside with a new boardwalk and gently sloping terraces to the river edge.

River Crossing: The consortium has provided a comprehensive list of factors to guide the location of the new pedestrian bridge across the Torrens and suggests the bridge landing on the southern side of the river helps to create an active hub with easy access to public transport via Adelaide Railway Station.

Natural Riverbank: Suggested reshaping of the area known as Pinky Flat, by creating a series of wetlands that would reflect the landscape before European settlement, incorporating a network of boardwalks and a striking new fountain.

Riverbank Gateway: Creating a new urban tree-lined street which would help bring to life the edges of Station Rd.

ARM has developed the draft Master Plan in collaboration with the Riverbank Stakeholder Reference Group, including representatives from Adelaide Festival Centre, Adelaide Convention Centre, Adelaide City Council, Skycity, Tourism SA, Intercontinental and the Integrated Design Commission.

Minister Conlon said the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure had received more than 1,000 responses on how to best plan Riverbank during recent community engagement.

“Once the final master plan has been completed it will be presented to Cabinet by the year’s end for its consideration and endorsement of the vision, ideas, concepts and proposed governance arrangements of the precinct,” Minister Conlon said.

The details in the draft Master Plan are intended to present an overall vision and series of concepts and investment opportunities that warrant further consideration and is not a final plan.

The next step is to seek community and stakeholder feedback on the concepts and ideas in the draft Master Plan.

Minister Conlon said members of the public would have a number of chances to have their say through website questionnaires and direct engagement with the Master Plan team.

Call for Riverbank unique ideas

THE State Government has called for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to revitalise Adelaide’s Riverbank precinct along the River Torrens.

The deadline for submissions is exactly one month, closing at 2pm on February 23.

Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon said the government was seeking “unique and innovative ideas”

“Over the past two years, the Riverbank Precinct has been the focus of a number of major development proposals which are either in the delivery stage or proposed,” Conlon said in a media statement this morning.

“There is a lot happening in this vibrant precinct – we have the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, the Adelaide Convention Centre expansion and many other projects on the cards.

“Projects like these allow us to offer young South Australians career and lifestyle options that will keep them in our state and also attract other skilled people.”

Conlon said he looked forward to the State Government and stakeholders, such as the Adelaide City Council and the Adelaide Festival Centre, working together to “capture the vision and principles” in the draft Master Plan released late last year.

“There is a wealth of potential within the precinct, in particular, the idea of a Festival Square featuring cafes, restaurants and commercial buildings, which will prove to be a popular place for the community to come together.”
