Dublin City Council gives green light for former Clery's building

Dublin City Council has granted planning permission to Clery’s new owners, Natrium, to proceed with proposals for a new mixed-use development on the site of the former O’Connell Street department store.

The development will comprise of offices, retail units, leisure facilities and a boutique hotel.

While council planners have attached 28 conditions to their approval for the redevelopment of the historic Clery’s premises, Natrium chief Deirdre Foley expressed her satisfaction at the decision.

Speaking to Independent.ie, Ms Foley said: “I’m delighted that Dublin City Council has given us this phenomenal opportunity to help in the regeneration and redevelopment of this iconic building and to be a major catalyst for bringing O’Connell Street back to its former glory and the historic centre of the city.”

Quite apart from the redevelopment and reconfiguration of the interior of the existing Clery’s building into offices and retail units, Natrium intends to create what it describes as a “rooftop destination” area consisting of restaurants, bars and entertainment spaces with views of Dublin city and Dublin Bay.

The company also aims to reinvigorate Earl Place, which currently operates as a service lane, into a new street populated by retail units and a pedestrian area for shoppers.

Commenting on the receipt of planning permission for the project, lead architect for the scheme, Finghin Curraoin of Henry J. Lyons Architects expressed his firm’s determination to restore Clery’s building to its former grandeur.

Paddy McKillen's business partner plans exclusive multimillion euro apartments complex in Dublin

Northern Ireland-based Padraig Drayne is planning to build an exclusive multimillion euro apartment development in the upmarket Dublin suburb of Malahide, the Irish Independent has learned.

Mr Drayne's Northern Ireland firm Apamore Services has applied to Fingal County Council for permission for a five-storey building that will include 23 apartments.

It's a relatively small scale project for the developer, who joined forces with developer Paddy McKillen to build the Jervis Street shopping centre in Dublin over 20 years ago.

In 2014, Mr McKillen and Mr Drayne refinanced £110m (€128m) of their debts from Ulster Bank with backing from Bank of Ireland. The loans were connected to assets including the Forge Shopping Centre in Glasgow as well as the Ards Shopping Centre in Newtownards.

New Paddy McKillen Jr docklands hotel gets go-ahead from Dublin city planners

Property developers Paddy McKillen Jr and Matt Ryan have been given the green light by Dublin City Council to proceed with plans to develop a new hotel in the heart of Dublin's docklands.

The proposed hotel at 82 North Wall Quay will be located next to both Dublin Landings, the 1,000,000sq ft mixed-use development currently under construction by developer Sean Mulryan's Ballymore Properties and the Central Bank's new headquarters.

Construction of the new hotel is due to get under way within the next three months with a view to opening for business at the end of 2018. Upon completion, it will consist of 60 bedrooms, a rooftop bar and restaurant, ground floor bar and restaurant, coffee shop and terrace area.

As part of the permission given by Dublin City Council planners, McKillen and Ryan's company, Oakmount, also intends to restore the neighbouring 19th-century building at 81 North Wall Quay, returning it to its former use as a pub.

The project will also see the reinstatement of a garden to the rear of the property while the two buildings, both of which are protected structures, will be joined internally at ground floor level.

Apart from the works proposed for the existing properties, the plans drawn up by ODOS Architects will see the creation of an additional two floors with a planted flat roof above the existing eaves level of No 82, resulting in a five-storey building.

A new 'compact luxury hotel' could be squeezed into the old Andrew's Lane Theatre site

Plans for a new ‘compact luxury hotel’ in the heart of Dublin city centre have been submitted for planning permission.

The hotel is to be built on the Andrew’s Lane Theatre site near Dame Street and if permission is granted it will be open in 2019.

Hangar nightclub is currently on the site and the space has been used as a nighttime entertainment venue for a number of years.

The proposed hotel would be built following an investment of €21 million. The investment includes the cost of purchasing the site as well as construction works that will open up a site that is relatively enclosed at present.

When completed, the hotel will have 155 bedrooms that designers say will be “compact in size, typically 14 or 15 sq m.”
